Why even watch the game?

The Steelers have no chance.

Aaron Rodgers is a combination of the best of Tom Brady, Dan Marino, and Joe Montana.  I hear the Hall of Fame is suspending all of it's rules of induction to allow him in now.    He is in the process of being canonized as we speak and a nobel prize is eminent.  He also has four receivers that would start ahead of Jerry Rice.  Green Bay's offense is really a combination of the 2007 Patriots and the 1984/1988/1989/1994 49ers.

You want to talk about defense?  All they need in the secondary is their two corners, who needs safeties?  The 1985 Bears and 1976 Steelers defenses were porous compared to this bunch.

Wow, this is what it sounds like every time I turn on ESPN.  I have never witnessed a feeding frenzy like this, do you think if the Packers hadn't smoked the Falcons like they did, it would be this bad?  Am I wrong or did this team lose six games?  has a 10-6 team ever been the favorite in a Super Bowl before?  I know they are a good team but come on.

I hope on Sunday we win so the Aaron Rodgers/Packers lovefest will stop, it makes me nauseous.

This is good

Whether or not GB lost 6 games is irrelevant though. They got here and deserve to be here and have a great shot at winning this game. Rodgers has been playing great, although I’ll argue he hasn’t been playing any better than he did last year, the defense has just improved. I haven’t watch ESPN much lately so I guess I don’t feel the same.

There can actually be an argument

That Rodgers is playing a little worse than he did last year. But the big difference is how great the defense has been playing.

To be fair

The Bears have a strong defense. And the Packers were doing their “try to kill the clock with 18 minutes to go” strategy.

Also, Rodgers “disappearing” is still like 200 yards and a touchdown.

The Bear D

is a mere shadow of the Steel Curtain. They don’t have a linebacker that would start in Pittsburgh, specifically Urlacher. He is flat footed and slower than Farrior at this point. You saw him get juked on more than one occasion on a critical down. That won’t happen to the Steeler LB’s. They also don’t have a CB or a S like Troy or Ike.

Not saying the Pack isn’t worthy of being in the SB, though.

Urlacher & Briggs are on the same level as Farrior & Timmons

I’d say Tillman is better than Ike, or at least a similar level. No one else has a similar role as Polamalu except Woodson.

Timmons and Farrior are much better than Briggs and Urlacher.

Two years ago, maybe you’re right. Not anymore. Timmons is a beast. Farrior is the ultimate warrior/teammate. James Farrior is the Randy Couture of football.

I’m not trying to downplay the Bears’ duo, either. They are very talented – just not on the same level as Farrior and Timmons, who both display jewelry for their efforts, by the way.

Of course, Warner could not move....

Rodgers is scary in the same way that BB is – escapability and creativity. Rodgers is fast, faster than BB. I think if he is going to be pressured it has to be right from the start.

If he gets comfortable he will be formidable. If he gets rattled and beat up a little, then we have a better chance at defending open formations and maybe some INTs.

Green Bay will shit the bed

Badly.

When Green Bay has had a bad game this year, they’ve done criminally bad.

This is a team that managed to lose to Detroit 7-3. This a team that managed to lose to the Redskins.

If Green Bay comes out against Pittsburgh and plays like that, they will be massacred. And I think it’s going to happen.

Streaky teams are the last folks who want to sit two weeks before a game. A lot of the big mo is leaking away as we speak.

If you ended up scoring more than your opponent, you found a way to win.

The Bills may not be that great, but it is the NFL – there are no easy games. Buffalo stepped up that day and held us. If they ever find a QB, they’ll have a decent squad.

We found a way to beat some pretty good teams, too.

Good luck to your Packers. Most definetly my second favorite team in sports.

Stevie Johnson choked

So, every team that’s around when, say, Peyton Manning chokes, those teams get to keep their victories.

But, when Stevie Johnson chokes (and he played an awful game all day that day) we’re required to hand back the victory?

Also, frankly, that just doesn’t compare to the fact that Green Bay gives up and mails it in when Aaron Rodgers isn’t out there.

by theobserver on Feb 3, 2011 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Seems to me with our back up QB in the game

We looked much better than the Steelers against New England. If not for a flukey kickoff return we more likely than not walk out of New England with a win. He stated the Packers mail it in without Rodgers and I was pointing out we played pretty well without him against a common opponent.

by the yooper on Feb 3, 2011 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

So did we.

You lost to the Falcons in week 11, 20-17. Aaron Rodgers played the whole game, throwing for 344 yards, with a 114.5 QB rating. He threw for a TD and ran for a TD.

We beat the Falcons in week one, with our 4th string quarterback, who threw 0 TD’s and one pick. And, our idiot then-kicker Jeff Reed missed two field goals.

So what? Doesn’t tell me anything.

I don’t think the Pack mail it in when Rodgers isn’t playing. Any team will be less effective without their starting QB. Both our teams have had many injuries this season, but we still got to the Super Bowl. We have the two best fanbases in the sport. Can we stop the petty arguing over whose team plays better with their backups? Let’s just enjoy the fact that both our teams have accomplished the goal they set in training camp. They made it to the Super Bowl.

Both teams are peaking at the right time. This could be one of the greatest Super Bowls ever.

by Wiedmann on Feb 3, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

The Falcons are over-rated

And frankly, the NFC has been historically weaker than the AFC since the Cowboys second dynasty ended.

Of the Falcons, I’m not a fan of any team that requires as many free agent signings as the Falcons. Ask the Ravens how that tends to work out. Free agent signings need to be targeted and aimed at long-term holding. The Falcons are too inclined toward the Tony Gonzalez and John Abraham type acquisition, with guys toward the end of their careers.

That is one thing I’ll give the Packers. They develop inhouse and through the draft.

If a team is going to go aggressively after free agents, the FAs need to be signing like Charles Woodson, where you’re getting a guy who will play for you for ten years and eventually melt into the team culture. It’s important that your FA signings be guys who will end their career thought of as members of your team, and not just a stopover.

Anyhoo . . . I accept it. The Packers fans are just not built to troll. Apparently Wisconsin is just full of well-meaning civility.

It’s probably all that cheese. Binds you up. Makes your tummy feel bad. Takes the fighting spirit right out of you.

by theobserver on Feb 4, 2011 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

Comparative scores, now?

Jesus, you Packers fans suck at trolling.

Every NFL team has that one opponent that just ties them in knots. For the Steelers, that team has been the Pawts.

Also, if you go too wild with comparative scores, there’s an argument that the Bengals are the best team in the NFL.

Hell, the best anyone played the Pawts was the Browns! So, by comparative scores, both the Steelers and the Packers are worse than the Browns.

To be clear, I’m talking about the problem the Pack has with astonishingly shitty games. Few Super Bowl champs have the number of just butt ugly games the Pack has played.

Every NFL team has a bad game, every season. Ask the Pawts about that Browns game. It happenes.

But, you’re really not supposed to play as ugly as the Pack did three times against the Bears. Yeah, I’m counting the fact that the Bears coaching staff screwed the pooch in the conference championship game against you guys! The Bears coached themselves into a mess when they could have tied that game, because they refused to let their third-string QB run the two minute offense.

The Pack have had a lot of suspect games this season.

by Wiedmann on Feb 4, 2011 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

That was a half decent troll

We’ll get ya Packers fans there.

The Packers are just one of those teams.

I don’t like streaky teams. Streaks end. And streaks don’t tend to like bye weeks.

I don’t like teams that rack up points and then hang on. Eventually you get caught in a close game and can’t hang on. Ask the Pawts.

I don’t like teams that have very uneven records. Sometimes the Packers look like world beaters. Sometimes they look like a CFL practice squad.

The Packers have a lot of traits that tend to come back and bite a team in the ass.

Plus, frankly, I think you guys dodged one against the Bears.

by theobserver on Feb 4, 2011 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

I do agree with that

McCarthy gets a two score lead in the 3rd quarter, and decides that now we’ve got to change what has worked. Let’s go prevent defense & try to run out the clock (even though there’s at least 20 minutes of game time left). He doesn’t go for the jugular, and keep the foot on the gas (and throat of the opposition), and quite frankly, I don’t know why he doesn’t. I do think the one distinct advantage that the Steelers have is at the head coaching position.

I disagree that they’ve looked like a CFL practice squad, though I realize you’re exaggerating. The Redskin & Dolphin games just caught us at the wrong time, reeling from injuries and the backups not having much experience. The backups have been filling in for a while & are more seasoned now than they were at that point. The game against Detroit could very well have ended the same way as the 49er game, just that Rodgers wasn’t in the game to get his act together. Detroit’s a good team, too. They’re nowhere near the 0-16 disaster that Matt Millen masterminded. They’re stocked with loads of young talent; don’t be surprised if they finish 10-6 next year.

I don’t quite understand what you mean by the Packers being a “streaky team.” Are you referring to the winning streak they’ve been on since the Patriot* game? If not, what exactly are you talking about?

I don’t like teams that rack up points and then hang on.

Did you hand in your Steelers fan club card after the AFC CG? Was the Bears game closer than it should have been? Absolutely. But, I don’t see how dominating a majority of the game and allowing a few prevent defense drives could be seen as a “bad” thing or something which will catch up to them & bite them in the ass.

A.J. Hawk, B.J. Raji, C.J. Wilson, who's next, D.J. Shockley?

by Wiedmann on Feb 5, 2011 3:16 AM EST up reply actions

The distinction

Is the Steelers have fought their way through those ugly games where they won by a field goal (mostly because we finally cut Jeff Reed).

All I’ll say about racking up and hanging on is this:

Look at the New England Patriots.

Back in the day when they were built to win ugly — the era Adam Vinatieri won every game for them — the Pawts won three championships.

When they allowed Vinatieri to leave via free agency and opted to start using 16-receiver sets and stop running the ball altogether and trying to score 50 points a game, the Pawts performance in the playoffs dropped off dramatically (or, more accurately, they became mortal).

It seems counter-intuitive, but teams need to be able to handle those games where they struggle.

As for what I mean by “streaky” vis a vis the Pack, what I mean is that the Pack goes through stretches where they win 45-24 and stretches where they don’t win at all.

I realize the NFL season is too short for anyone to really have a multitude of good or bad streaks in the way a baseball team can.

But, for me the Pack feels like a team that is either hot or cold, but rarely in-between. The Packers are one of those teams that is constantly in threat of laying down a real turd of a game.

by theobserver on Feb 5, 2011 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

"stretches where they don't win at all"

There was the 2 game streak without Rodgers & the 2 game streak without Matthews, and really, you can’t even say they played poorly in all of those games. Against the Bears in week 3, they committed a franchise record for penalties, allowed a punt return TD, and, if not for a crucial late fumble, more than likely would have won. That’s not “cold,” that’s repeatedly shooting yourself in the foot & still almost having the wherewithal to drag that bloody foot across the finish line.

Comparing them to the Patriots* is unfair (aside from the fact that the Packers never had an extended period of cheating), because when the Patriots* lost, they lost big. The Packers didn’t get blown out by 20 to a team like the Browns (the Browns!), and when they went into Meadowlands they shut out the Jets, not a loss by two touchdowns. Sure, the Packers blew out some teams, but I don’t see how you can view that as a negative. If the Bills had taken us to OT, like they did to you, that would have been better than a 27 point win?

We have been fighting back against adversity, and winning. Your team has been fighting back from adversity all season, and winning less.

we have just as many players on IR, more key players than you do. Despite this fact we went 12-4. We went 3-1 without our starting QB, you cannot win without your star QB or LB.

More key players? Starks/Colon definitely hurts, but we lost a starting T, too.

Pit Steelers:

T Max Starks (7)
C Maurkice Pouncey (0)

RB Ryan Grant (15)
OLB Brad Jones (10)
ILB Nick Barnett (12)
T Mark Tauscher (12)

*DE Mike Neal
S Derrick Martin

DE Justin Harrell
Minimal impact at best:

I’m not saying that the Steelers didn’t fight through adversity, but to say their injury situation is anything like the Packers is simply false.

The Ratbirds fans have had a lot of practices being on the losing side of a major rivalry.

by theobserver on Feb 4, 2011 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, actually

The Buffalo game was a bit of an oddity for a couple reasons.

1. Say what you want about Stevie Johnson, but it wasn’t just one drop. The guy was putting on a full Limas Sweed clinic that day.

2. The Steelers had a good late defensive stand.

3. Except for on big play by Fred Jackson, there wasn’t a ton of offense from Buffalo.

4. Buffalo fought hard all season. That was a crappy team that tended to fight like lions every week.

Matthews and Finley both got hurt in the Washington game

We were hit by more injuries than any other team this season and took a while to adjust. Not only the 15 players whose season was ended but significant time was missed by several other starters. Cullen Jenkins just got back 2 games ago and Matthews is just starting to feel 100% Take 9 of your starters out of a game lets see how good you are

Boo-hoo

Have you watched out offensive line this season?!

NFL teams are supposed to play through depth problems.

by theobserver on Feb 3, 2011 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

We've had that happen

And we were (are) still pretty good. Coaches are supposed to account for players that could be out due to injury. It’s called depth.

One of the great disappointments of a football game is that the cheerleaders never seem to get injured.

by samliam on Feb 3, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Streaky team?

More like not as good without their best players. They lost Rodgers (arguably their best offensive player) in the Detroit game, and lost Matthews (arguably their best defensive player) & Finley in the Redskins game. That’s a little different than knowing your QB was going to be out, and preparing with your backup all week.

No team has ever smelled the playoffs let alone made the Superbowl with thee amount of starts we have lost to injuries

So, yea I like our depth. I’m confident we will win and it makes me just as confident we will be here next year as well when some of our better players will be back from injury.

by the yooper on Feb 3, 2011 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

we have lost both of our tackles

and then at other points of the year we have had starters on our OLine go down. Our anchor of the defense went down. We fought through it.

Seriously.

How many teams have been as desperate as the Steelers on OL and gotten this far? The Steelers during the Jets game were one more injury away from playing Brett Keisel on OL.

and so did we

We happened to have a few speed bumps along the way, but we’re in the SB.

Prepping backups

Dude, we used FOUR quarterbacks this season! We had to put in the backup to our backup’s backup!

Are you fucking serious?!

Wow.

Really? You’re coaching staff sucks so badly they don’t prep the backups in case the starter gets hurt?

I really hope Aaron Rodgers gets a bigger contract in exchange for all the responsibility!!

Where did you hear that?

Weird…

I think

Peter King wrote about it in an article, so it must be true…

I think that was an "alleged" article....

oh right, ALLEGED is now listed as a synonym for FACT.

Wow!

This is the dumbest fuckin comment I have seen all year! The yooper, more like the pooper!

Because

the Steelers don’t have the “Style Appeal” that the pundits like. We just grind it out and win games week after week, year after year. I’m personally glad we’re the underdog, we seem to play better when we are.

Because it's all about who they think will draw more bets...

Not necessarily who they think is better. This underdog stuff is so over-rated, it’s a gambling thing, not a football thing. Ask Jimmy The Greek.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

I know this reallydoesn't belong in my post but I need a little help.

My 88 year old mother fell today and broke her hip for the second time, the surgery this week will be touchy. She is a huge Steelers fan and watches or listens to every game, and will be watching tomorrow from her hospital room. If the Steelers win tomorrow her spirits will be much higher going into the surgery. I need to know, is there any way to get one of the players a message that she will be watching and still rooting for them when she is so down? I would appreciate any input. I thank all of you in advance, I know this has nothing to do with the discussion.
