Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Just ATuesday Ramble

A lot has been written about the Steelers needing either a corner or an offensive lineman in this draft. I was just thinking about picking an offensive lineman and the role Sean Kugler plays. So far, he has done pretty good. I mean, the first offensive lineman the steelers picked with him as the offensive line coach was a rookie pro bowler. That gives me high hopes for the future of picking offensive linemen.

How does that concept, the one where the position coach plays a key role in finding the draftee, come into play when Tomlin is considering a new secondary coach? I don't know, but I hope it plays a role. Which leads me to this question for those of you guys that know: Was Ray Horton a good secondary coach? The Steelers didn't seem to be too good at picking corners the last few years.

If you head on over to Steelers.com, there are a couple of quick hit articles (They don't do any other kind) about Mike Tomlin. There are a couple of interesting little tidbits in there and as they don't take very long to read, I recommend you give them a minute or two.

It seems the new speculation is that Ike Taylor will be getting the transition tag. This seems like a no-brainer to me. There is no way the Steelers can afford to loose Ike, I don't care what Tomlin's philosophy is about "The standard is the standard". If we lose Ike, the standard will be much lower. I think it might be wise to dust off the "I like Ike" campaign signs and march around in front of the Stelers' office just to let them know, even the fans know how much Ike means to the team, not to mention how popular he is.

Well, Champ Bailey was signed to stupid money. I think an overpriced signing like that shows that the Broncoshave turned into a desperate team since the release of Shannahan (SP?). Are they taking lessons from Al Davis? Here's something else I don't get: Why would you sign a coach who is responsible for his last team getting the first pick in the draft? I digress. As Mr. Stephens wrote in his Daily Six, this signing of Bailey will not bode well for the Steelers picking up a quality CB in free agency. But more to the point, how will it affect the resigning of Ike?

Wait a minute, what WAS Champ getting paid? Doesn't the 30% rule apply to him? So, he couldn't have gotten more than a 30% raise, right? So how much was he getting paid?

I would like to revisit the delusional world of superstition for a minute. You see, I may have caused the Steelers to lose the Super Bowl. Yes, I said it. It night have been me. Over the last few years, I have discovered that the Steelers don't do well when I wear any Steelers apparel or have my Terrible Towel out. So, for the Super Bowl, I had everything tucked away nice and safe. Only, my buddy wanted to see my ski boots. Without thinking I got them down off the self, removing the hats that were piled on them. Also without thinking, I may have touched a Steelers hat. So now you know, it might have been me. My bad.

Now that Aaron Smithis going to be healthy to start next year, who are the starting defensive ends? Aaron is "Injury prone" as of late, but still one of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the business, if not the best. Do you start Ziggy to keep Aaron fresh for the end of the game and the season, or do you start Aaron and hope he doesn't get hurt? If you do start Aaron, when do you bring in Ziggy? Is one better at stopping the run and one better at the pass rush? Can the Steelers afford to pay three defensive ends starting money? At this point, I think "Starter" is just a tittle you apply to the guy who is in the position for the first snap of the game.

Everyone likes to say that the biggest leap in performance for a receiver is between the first and second year. Man, the Steelers receiving core is going to be scary good. Put Ward, Miller, Wallace, Sanders and Brown on the field at the same time, and watch the defense try and cover them. What if the offensive line gets better in pass protection? Oh my. Add in Mendy's probable increase in production if the line gets better. The Steelers just went to the Super Bowl and their offense wasn't even as good as it can be. Nice thought.

So the Steelers franchised Woodley, does that affect Harrison? Is it more or less money than Harrison? Can the Steelers afford to pay that kind of money to both OLB's? I've heard it both ways: The Steelers will develop Worilds and let Woodley go next year, and that they can't live without him. Personally, I say do what they have to do to keep Woodley. I like the fact that he has never - not once - opened his mouth or said a negative thing about his contract or the negotiations. I think Worilds would have to be phenomenal to replace Woodley, both on the field and in our hearts.

Any of you lawyers reading this, answer me this: If the purpose of the union decertifying, as I have seen written several places, is to pursue antitrust litigation against the NFL, what is that antitrust litigation seeking to change? If the antitrust litigation is successful, how will it change the NFL? In five thousand small words or less please.

You have to know the Bengals can't cave to Palmers demands. If they do, they will never get another player to stay there again. If you let one player out, there will be a stampede. I always thought the Bengals hired low character guys because they were cheap, but I now realize it is because they can't get any quality guys to consider going there. On the bright side, Carson might make a good broadcaster. Good luck Carson.

I was trying to think of something new to do with Punxsutawney Polamalu and it hits me, f**k Steely McBeam!, Punxy should be the Steelers mascot.

Lastly, a fun question for you readers: I'm always amazed at how many participants we have from far an wide on BTSC, so I'm wondering, which of you lives the farthest from Heinz field, in miles. ESGB? No?

Okay, I'm out of babel for the day.

GO STEELERS!

nice ramblings

the whole union thing is just a ploy.

the union is screwed. the fact that players make so much money is because there is no competition to what they do. All anti-trust would do is break up the NFL into 32 smaller businesses. Each franchise would have to negotiate its own TV contracts and etc. Goodell job would become obsolete and we’d enter a whole new can of worms, at least thats how I think it would go. The NFL as we know it would cease to exist.

You don’t bite the hand that feeds you but that is exactly what the union must do in order to get what it wants, its a very tough proposition. Anything the union gets will be at the graciousness of the owners. The only leverage the union has is that if the owners bring in scabs they have to bank that no one will watch or go to the games. I for one would not watch scab football. but that doesn’t mean 50 million other people won’t and if they do the union is screwed.

I thought...

If the union decertified, then the owners could not lock the players out and there would be no CBA, but there would be football.

by WyoFan on Feb 23, 2011 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

that very well be true

What I was talking about was if they took them to court and won based on anti trust laws

If I understand it correctly,

the main purpose of decertification is to allow the players, via their team representative(s) to quickly (like in a 24-hour period) say that the union no longer speaks for them. (I believe that all of the teams have now voted to be in position to quickly decertify.) If the union is no longer the bargaining agent for the players, that means that the owners can’t force the union to accept something that they don’t like at final negotiating point (which is sometime on March 3rd.)

As labor law stands now (again, if I’ve got this right, because I’m certainly not a labor lawyer, but I discussed this with one a couple of months ago,) management, if they determine that the union is not ‘negotiating in good faith,’ has this option, and can force the union to accept a so-called "last best offer: – which would presumably be a much less favorable agreement than the union would have been holding out for. But if the union is suddenly not the bargaining agent for the players anymore, then that ploy doesn’t work. At least it doesn’t work if the owners don’t manage to get some sort of injunction on the basis that this is clearly bogus, because the last time the players did that (I think that was 1987) the union re-formed as soon as everything was sorted out.

The secondary effect of decertification is that since the players no longer have a “bargaining agent” as a group, they can bring a class-action suit against the league if they think it will help. It’s hard for me to see what positive thing that would accomplish, but then, as I mentioned, I’m not a lawyer…

the "last best offer"

can be accepted or the player’s can strike or decertify the union, under certain circumstances they still may have to play while a new deal is struck. but if they strike, i don’t think they can be forced to play. although players have already said they won’t strike.

by decertifying and suing to remove anti-trust exemptions, players can strike down FA and salary caps as these are anti-competitive advantages only for companies with anti-trust exemptions. so if they really want to go “nuclear” and go after the salary cap and the structure of NFL player contracts (obviously they want fully guaranteed contracts) then there may be some who get A-rod type $.

but in getting the salary cap removed or getting better contracts, the players will probably end up hurting the competitiveness just like baseball has done. and football doesn’t have the union unity that baseball has. too many of the players are transient, they just don’t have much time in the NFL.

Thanks ya'll.

Great stuff, very informative. I too still do not see the benefit in bringing an antitrust suit against the NFL.

by WyoFan on Feb 24, 2011 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

here is the reason, $1.8mm vs. $3.3mm

baseball players are paid almost double football, b/c they were willing to go to the mats (and they had sustainable unity) to get paid. if the NFL players were able to do it they would too. without a salary cap there is no reason a top QB shouldn’t make closer to a-rod type $ (or maybe more – with a shorter contract) and have more protection (guaranteed contracts).

by kk99 on Feb 24, 2011 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

in other words

the salary cap exists only because of some of the NFL’s anti-trust exemptions. a normal business cannot have a salary cap, markets set wages, it is illegal for employers without anti-trust to collude and limit wages just like they cannot set prices together.

by going after anti-trust, the best players with longevity will probably get paid much more but the lesser players will probably suffer too. but if you are a top QB, WR or CB, removing the salary cap is a windfall for you.

by kk99 on Feb 24, 2011 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

the union really has no power. and if they want to decertify to break the anti-trust exemption, then revenue sharing and salary cap would go away and small market teams would become farm teams or move to bigger cities.

revenue sharing and salary caps are a must for smaller market teams to stay competitive.

My distance from Heinz Field

8666.680 miles according to this site:

I’m in Wellington New Zealand. That’s a good 200 miles from Christchurch so no earthquake effects here. This time…

I'm glad to hear from you, Kiwi -

is everything okay in your neck of the woods? The quake in Christchurch sounds bad.

things in Christchurch are bad. Really bad

It turns out Christchurch was built on a fault line nobody knew existed so most of the buildings there weren’t built with earthquakes in mind (unlike Wellington, where I am, which is built on 3 or 4 fault lines and a lot better prepared for the big one than Christchurch).

If anyone would like to donate to the relief effort down here by the way, a bunch of Americans in work tell me their family have been able to do so on this site:

http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/

The Red Cross are putting a huge effort in down there. I think they’re looking at evacuating a lot of people to other places in New Zealand. Myself and a whole lot of other Wellingtonians have offered spare rooms up to the refugees but still waiting to hear from the Local Council when that will be (or if it’ll be needed).

Thanks for the concern Rebecca.

I don't know...

the circumferance of the planet is 24,000+ miles, so, theroretically you could get 12,000 miles away. I would think that would be somewhere in China or Russia.

It would be really cool to find a Steelers fan there. Not as cool as a fa in Port Hedland, but really cool.
