No Respect Given is a Good Thing

When the season started few of the experts predicted our Steelers to make the playoffs.
With just a few days before THE game, the trend continues with far too many pundits predicting a Green Bay win. As noted, the youngest coach to ever make it to 2 Super Bowls did not even receive a single vote for COY.
For our Steelers, this is a good thing.

At the beginning of the season with Ben out on suspension and our number 2 QB, Leftwich, sidelined with an injury the football prognosticating industry gave our Steelers little hope of starting out well in the first four games. This did not sit well with a team only a season removed from its last Lombardi Trophy. In fact, Coach Tomlin and the veteran leaders on the Steelers used this disrespect for the rest of the team as a motivator. In my perception the lack of respect from outside the locker room enabled Coach Tomlin to embed "The standard is the standard" in to the hearts, minds and souls of every player on the team.

And not only did the team play well without their starting QB, they came within a hair of going 4-0. Each of those three victories in the first four games was the margin of difference between being a number 5 seed and winning the division. Our Steelers won in difficult circumstances and came to see that what Coach Tomlin said was true.

Today I meandered over to the ESPN site and looked at the predictions of their folks. Far too many seem to have forgotten what the Steelers accomplished in games 1 thru 4 of the season. Far too many seem to have forgotten the way the Steelers found a way to completely dominate 2 very good teams for an entire half in each game in their playoff run. Far too many have put the hopes of their hearts in writing for a new shining star in Rogers.

This 2010/11 Steeler team is a VERY special team. We've seen more than our fair share of great Steeler football teams over 40 years. I contend this one is equal to any of the greatest. Beyond the physical and mental talent on this team is the PRIDE each and every member of this team has. Read those media interviews Michael Bean has posted.
The media has given our Steelers far too much disrespect in the past 2 weeks. That's fine.

Coach Tomlin has convinced our Steelers that respect is not given it is earned. And Coach Tomlin has convinced our Steelers that any respect freely given and not earned is worthless. As posters and front pagers here at BTSC have written, this team plays its best with a chip on its shoulder.

Thank-you media idiots. I'll preheat the oven for the meal of crow this Stiller team is going to serve up on Sunday night.

Go Super Steelers!!!!!!!
