Mendy keep your damn mouth shut. Using analogies comparing anything to slavery or the Holocaust is a mega-fail.

Slavery vs. Football

Pay: 0 dollars vs. Hundres of thousands to millions
Risk of death: Very, very high vs. low (although live is shortened, but they know this when they sign up)
Optional: No vs. yes
Ability to receive an education: No vs. yes
Chance of being beaten by owners: Yes vs. no
Rights: None vs. A ton that the NFLPA worked hard to get

Yea

There are a lot of differences but I don’t think thats what Mendenhall or Peterson meant when they said this. Everyone knows that obvious contrast between their situation and slavery, I doubt they are trying to say that, thats common sense.

Why even compare it to slavery then? They are obviously trying to go for that extremely negative connotation (and denotation for that matter) that is tied up with being a slave. It’s an awful way to make an argument, especially when the comparison is this weak. And lastly, it makes a mockery of all those poor souls that had to endure slavery.

I don’t think that they are trying to go for that extremely negative connotation that you speak of. It was a short sighted comment because offered no context to what he meant. But I don’t think Perterson is ignorant enough nor sheltered enough to actually have meant the connotation that everyone assumes that he meant.

Yea it is late

and they shouldn’t have said anything, but everyone does realize that slavery has been around before the American version and some versions of slavery the ‘Master’ actually treated his ‘slave’ like a human being. So we have no idea what they were referring to.

even if the owners do have some traits that one could compare to slavemasters, they are your employer and you need to respect that. i think the NFLPA needs to tell their “trade association” members to keep their mouths shut b/c they are doing real damage to their own cause. it is just ignorant and stupid to carry on this way and it only can make the situation that much worse. if i were an owner and one of the players said this it would make me think “f*** them” if this is what they think of us go play next year in arena football or get a real job. if they think this little about us then let’s up our expense credit back to $640mm or $1b and let them come back begging. let them miss a year’s paycheck to give them some real perspective.

i am not siding with the owners here, but you can only push people so far before they become adamant about dishing out vengeance. they will do it even if it means they are harming themselves and the fans in the process.

but I think people will adjust soon. Twitter is a new technology, it’ll take a while but I think people will learn what you can and cannot say on twitter. Its like taking a megaphone around the nation and saying once sentence statements.

i like how that article says slavery will always be a black eye on america….Its funny how whites in this country get ALL the blame and hatred for it. Wheres the hatred and disdain for our own ancestors in africa that captured and sold us off to americans to begin with. Nobody is up in arms over that….
