BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 13 -- Detroit Lions Select J.J. Watt, DE/DT, Wisconsin
No word from mississippi_steel so I've stepped in for him and made a selection for the Detroit Lions at No. 13. Next up: the St. Louis Rams, represented by Sarge_32. - Michael B. -

I know the Detroit Lions used their first round pick on Ndamukong Suh, a pick that paid immediate dividends for the seemingly resuscitated Lions franchise. Suh was named the 2010 Rookie of the Year for his incredible season, and looks like he'll be a perennial Pro Bowler for years to come. The Lions could stand to improve their linebacker corps, but I'm not sure there's a prospect whose safe enough of a bet to take this high. The Lions could also go after an offensive lineman -- perhaps Anthony Costanzo, or even Mike Pouncey.
I think a better pick though would be Watt, a guy I've been impressed by the more I see and read about. He's versatile, strong as an ox, yet pretty darn nimble and explosive as well. You can never have enough talent along the defensive line and I think Watt is the best player available still on the board, certainly along the DL and arguably on both sides of the ball. And to boot, Watt is cut from the same cloth as Suh -- both are as outstanding off the field as they are on it.

I'd take Castonzo
I think Watt will actually go earlier so I can’t argue too much with putting him next to Suh. But Jeff Backus is old and they could use a replacement for him sooner rather than later. They absolutely cannot afford Stafford going down with a season ending injury in his third year running, otherwise they’re absolutely hosed no matter how much they rebuild in their other areas. If they’re really serious about passing the Vikings and pushing the Bears, they should get Ijalana/Wisniewski/Cannon in the second round as well.
Watt v Castonzo
I think they would be much better with either one, but I think they have to take an OL to protect Stafford. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Lions trade back into first round to take one of the OLs or DEs that falls to the bottom.

I don't see them going here at all
Their D-line is already one of the best. For them to do that here would be like us adding a OLB in the 1st. Too much in one location compared to the rest. Most likely they go Castonzo, Camiri, or Smith.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Hmm, I like the position picked, but not the player
If they address the DL, it will likely be a more speedy compliment to Ndamakung Suh, someone like Kerrigan/Aldon Smith rather than the bigger Watt.
A long way from Pittsburgh PA, in fact, 8653.2 miles to be precise. My blood still bleeds black and gold like the rest of Steeler Nation, proud fan since 2002.
BTSC's token Kiwi fan. That means I'm a New Zealander. Yes, that small country next to Australia....no we are not part of Australia
