Is The NFL Ripe To Be Overthrown?

I submit to you, the NFL is in the perfect position to be usurped by another league. If thirty-two guys got together, I mean rich guys, organized a league, they might be in the right place at the right time.

With the lock-out, players are able to sign with anyone they want, from professional soccer, to the senior dog racing league (Picture it...). If a new league, let's call them the PFL (Professional Football League), formed and offered the players fair contracts, with good profit sharing, and benefits (The new league would not need to address retired players benefits, as they have no retired players), the PFL might (Should) be able to scoop most if not all of the current players.

Now consider this: What if the new league reverted back to some of the old rules? None of this flag football crap. What if they returned the game to what the fans wanted to see? Boom, takeover complete.

The new league could even play the same time of year as the NFL does now. Even if the NFL signed players of inferior caliber to fill their ranks, their game wouldn't compare to that of the new league. This would lead to the Television networks jumping ship and that would lead to the NFL's demise.

To start, the new league would have to play games at university stadiums and the like, but in two or three years, they could purchase some really nice professional quality stadiums for a song.

Think about it.

Nice idea

I wouldnt mind the chance to get to see some professional football this fall, but you cant just start up an entire other league overnight… by the time they got all the logistics in place, the NFLs lockout would be over.

This is what I've been thinking

I Just don’t think anyone is smart enough or ballsy enough to do it.

They could play in the stadiums that the cities own

some of these cities are going to lose a lot of money if football doesn’t return. I’m pretty sure they would be willing lease the stadium that the taxpayers own to these guys for some revenue. Except you wouldn’t be able to have a dallas team though.

That's what I'm sayin'...

I bet ol’ Jerry would be willing to sell that stadium after a couple of years of losing some serious money.

Indeed

very astute observation my dad was saying the same thing. He saying the cities should do it, start their own league, but would that be socialism? lol #endofconversation

Cuban and Trump could do it

And it would be glorious

Trump didn't do a very good job with the USFL, so I'd rather keep him out of it personally.

Ever watch “Small Potatoes”? I think it was one of ESPN’s first 30 for 30’s.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Nah, I never saw it

But I dont really want either of them in the NFL. I want Cuban in baseball, but not the NFL.

Agreed on Cuban, I like the guy (and the sandwich, maybe that's why I like the guy so much)...

Buy the Pirates Mark, seriously.

MLB missed out big time when they told him he couldn’t buy the Cubs.

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

Could you imagine the Pirates

With Cuban’s bank account/mentality to spend and the young talent they have? daanngg.

It’d look like the Mavs. Plus he still couldn’t compete with the Yankees for free agents without losing obsene amounts of money.

The man doesn’t know how to run a franchise, he just throws money around.

wouldn't happen

he has said many times that he would be funding player salaries from the teams profit.

Not saying it will happen

Just think it would be fun. Kind of like how every baseball fan secretly wishes George Steinbrenner bought their team instead of the Yankees.

That was a good 30 fo 30.

I liked the part about the players racing to the bank to cash their checks because they weren’t sure there was enough money to cover all of them.

OVERTHROW THE NFL!

YEAH, COME ON! HOW MUCH CAN WE TAKE? I REALLY LOVE MY TEAM FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM, BUT DAMN, THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I REALLY THINK THE OWNERS HAVE GONE SOCIOPATHIC AND OVER-ESTIMATE THEMSELVES AND HOW MUCH FANS WILL PAY. WE PAY TOP DOLLAR FOR EVERYTHING THEY SELL! WHO IN THE HELL NEEDS BILLION DOLLAR STADIUMS ANYWAY? I, PERSONALLY WANT A GOOD GAME FIRST, I DON’T CARE TO PAY HUGE TICKET PRICES AND OTHER COSTS FOR STADIUMS TO STOKE EGOS!

I know the players are locked out, but if they're under contract, can they still jump ship?

I’m no legal expert but I think there has to be a stipulation in a player’s contract that would prevent him from signing with another league.

by Anthony Defeo on Mar 21, 2011 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

UFL is probably waiting anxiously

There are a lot of guys, heck maybe even drafted rookies who could come to the UFL if the lockout continues…

As far as existing contracts I dont know about that stipulation… I mean who would have even considered it before?

by Mechem on Mar 21, 2011 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

The last time players jumped leagues was the AFL

so I guess in theory they could, but if the league got asorbed it may be like the NFL-AFL merger where the players who jumped to the AFL had to go back to their orginial teams.
