BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 16 -- Jacksonville Jaguars Select Brooks Reed, DE, Arizona
I originally had posted the Jags pick from Michael Ulhorn who graciously offered to pick for Jacksonville in place of DadeCountyJag. Literally minutes after posting the pick, I heard back from DCJ, so we'll go with his selection. Thanks to Michael U. and to DCJ for their efforts. Next up: the New England Patriots, represented by NYSteelersFan4. - Michael B.

For years now there has been one glaring problem with the Jaguars defense. Inability to get pressure on the QB. Although there are many other holes needed to be filled on defense like LB, S, and CB, I don't think you can pass up on what Brooks Reed brings to the table. A high energy, non-stop motor with a knack for finding the ball. Great tackler, and is relentless while perusing the QB. Very athletic, with great speed in pursuit, he was actually a HB before. High character guy which Gene Smith loves, 3 year starter and Captain in college. Natural leader and electric personality on the field, which the Jags lack. Often draws comparison to Clay Matthews, and its not because of the hair. Great instincts and can probably play OLB if needed. Now here is the main reason the Jags cant pass up on him here. Aaron Kampman. Placing a player like Reed opposite of AK would solidify our D-Line, with 3 young beasts in the middle, book-ended by 2 relentless pass rushers on the outside. With all the new pressure on opposing QB's, (Peyton Manning) it will also help out our young DB's tremendously in their progression.

16 is a reach for mine.
Must be the Clay Matthews effect. Teams passed, and it came back to them. No-one will let it happen again, I guess.

i hear ya
Was kinda thinking the exact same thing in terms of using high picks on guys that are safe bets to be ‘very good’ rather than rolling the dice on a guy who could be amazing but also carries a higher bust potential.

Since it was only posted for a second
I’ll say that I think the Jags surprise everyone with this pick. I could see them taking a high risk player, but I could also see them taking someone perfect for their system:
Rahim Moore.

He's not as good as Troy was or Earl Thomas is
that’s too much of a reach for him. That and another way to stop manning is to make him fall down.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

True, but Manning has proven he can beat an above average pass rush
But great CBs and Safeties still give him some trouble.
He isnt as good as Troy or Earl Thomas, but he doesn’t have to be to get selected with this pick. The Jags picked Alualu when he was probably a late-first rounder, if that last year. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they overreached for Moore.

The reason Alualu was considered a late-first rounder was he came from a 3-4
and the jags play a 4-3. Some thought Alualu would be better at 4-3 DT and Jacksonville took the chance. Turns out they were right. Gene Smith it seems doesn’t reach on a player like that.

Was part of that pick also sign-ability (to make a word up for what I mean)?
I think I rememer hearing that part of the reason he was drafted tenth was that he was willing to sign for less than what the average tenth overall pick makes. Maybe that was just specualtion.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

That way have been 1 reason
IMO it seems kinda of a small reason out of many reasons to pick someone. Just not big enough to pforce the hand.

Kerrigan is a better pass-rusher than Reed.
Why not him? Plus it’s less of a reach than Reed, who’s climbed a round and a half in 3 weeks.

4. CB Curtis Marsh, Utah State
4. LT/RT Derrick Newton, Arkansas State
5. ILB Kevin Sheppard, LSU
6. DE David Carter, UCLA
7. S/CB Byron Maxwell Clemson

Biggest gripe
I am 100% confident the Steelers will draft a kicker.
Until they dont, then I’ll be like 45% confident.

Now this is a real Jaguars pick
Unexpected, dare I say off the deep end, yet not without logic.
I remember reading this on Rang’s Draft Blog at cbssports:
Perhaps his most impressive total came in the most important test for defensive linemen (and, some would say, linebackers) in the ten-yard split. Reed was timed at 1.54 seconds over the first ten yards, demonstrating a degree of explosiveness typically reserved for much smaller men. Reed’s 1.54 seconds not only was the fastest of all defensive ends (North Carolina’s Robert Quinn was second at 1.61), his split was also faster than some of the more highly touted athletes of the Combine, including Nevada OLB Dontay Moch, Tennessee-Chattanooga CB Buster Skine, Kentucky WR Randall Cobb, Georgia WR AJ Green, Troy WR Jerrel Jernigan, and Texas A&M OLB Von Miller.
Each of these players weighed in at less than 250 pounds and all ran the 40-yard dash faster at 4.48 or faster, but weren’t as explosive in their initial start as Reed.
I love it.
