BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 26 -- Baltimore Ravens Select Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland
Thanks to Josh Roberts for the pick and quick writeup. The Ravens do need some more speed on offense, but not sure I'm a big fan of this pick for Baltimore. By the way, I'm liking the way this mock is shaping up, but I'm pretty surprised that Mike Pouncey is still on the board after he tore it up at his Pro Day. Perhaps he'll be coming off the board soon. Next up: the Atlanta Falcons, represented by the philosopher Bluegrass Steeler. - Michael B. -
**************
MaLor is able to return to BTSC because I have indeed picked one of our beloved closet case's favorite players. I don't know whether my choice will be celebrated or attacked here due to that small fact. Anyway, onto the hardcore player analysis. During a certain heartbreaking loss or two last season for our friends the Purple Brownies, I remember thinking to my self, why in the hell are all these WR's so damn slow? The offence currently has no sort of fire and spark to it, tending to get bogged down when it needs a big play, and this leads to added pressure on a still maturing Flacco, and well, when you add in a flying fuzzball on the blitz, it doesn't make for a happy sight for our less fortunate hard nosed brethren. Enter Torrey Smith, a blazer with decent hands and route running ability who is also electric after the catch, as well as on punt returns. I certainly don't want to see him running any punts back against our ST coverage. His impressive measurables as well as his stunning performances as a Terp will convince Ozzie Newsome to pull the trigger on the 6'1" wideout.

I could see the Ravens revamping their receiving corps this season. No issues with the pick, good stuff. Now we need a corner to help cover him

Unfortunatly this would probably be a good pick for the ravens. any chance the ravens trade up to get one of the top 2 recievers? that would help flacco more than anything.

I think this would force our hand to get help in the defensive backfield
because we can’t afford to have Gay on Boldin, because we would have to put Ike on Smith.

I'm not sold on Torrey being a stud #1
Certainly not right away. His route tree needs a lot of work and his hands are not elite. I think where he would really hurt us is on screens or in the return game.

do you really want him blowing past BMac or Willie Gay
the only route he needs against those two is a go route

the rahim moore love seems to be dying a little bit. i still think he would be a great choice but people seem to be thinking we will go in a different direction.

Free Safety in Round 1? You just dont see that anymore. Strong Safeties yes, but a lot of Free Safetys are converted from CBs. Thats why I wouldnt be high on picking Moore. Hes a solid player though

Torrey is a reach at 26, and I am even a Terp myself. Would have rather had Wilkerson or Sherrod here.

I wouldn’t say a reach, more of a grab. A reach would be someone akin to Titus Young, who is probably exactly what you need, but is likely a mi second rounder.

I would rather draft Titus Young in the 2nd than Torrey Smith in the first. BUT, if this did happen, I would absolutely love it. Definitely would have to get a #82 jersey.

When you say youd want Sherrod here, are you expecting Gaither not to return?

I wouldn’t mind Sherrod at 26. I doubt we will know if Gaither is coming back or not within the next month leading up to the draft. But I could definitely see Ozzie taking a OL like Sherrod, Carimi, Costanzo or Solder in the first round.

Interesting. I sort of had OL as an afterthought after DE and WR for you guys
