BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 28 -- New England Patriots Select Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida
I'm going to go ahead and make the New England Patriots' second of two first round picks here. Many thanks to NYSteelersFan4 for the first Pats pick back at No. 17. Next up: the Chicago Bears, represented by veteran BTSC'er and annual community mock draft participant, betelguese. - Michael B. -
**************
Sorry Steeler Nation. I know we'd love to see the Pouncey twins reunited in Pittsburgh for their professional football careers, and perhaps we're all subconciously not picking Mike in our community draft in order to will him to the Steelers late in the first round. But let's be real -- it's extremely unlikely that Mike Pouncey will still be on the board when the Steelers select at No. 31 in this April's Draft. Not with the way he tore it up at Florida's Pro Day recently. In all likelihood, the young man will be off the board no later than when the Philadelphia Eagles select at No. 23.
Anyway, even though the Pats snagged Gabe Carimi at No. 17 in our mock draft, I would still take Pouncey here were I in charge of the Patriots' war room on draft day. He's the best player still on the board in my opinion. Not only that though, right guard just so happens to be a big need for the Patriots . Dan Connolly has been serviceable for New England since joining the Patriots from Jacksonville in 2008. A former practice squad guy out of Southeast Missouri State, Connolly played well enough during his first two seasons with the Pats to earn himself an extension through the 2011 season. But make no mistake about it, the Pats would love to upgrade in a big way by letting Pouncey compete for Connolly's job as early as this coming season. If Pouncey needs a year before being a part of a championship caliber team like the Pats, so be it. There's no money invested in Connolly beyond the '11 season and Pouncey could theoretically slide into the starting role in '12.
Had Gabe Carimi not been selected by the Pats earlier in our mock, I would have snagged Nate Solder of Colorado with this pick. I think our community draft is quite interesting and full of sound picks. But one dude who's guaranteed to not be on the board in the late 20s is Solder, a towering 6'8 tackle who's great in pass protection in what's become an increasingly pass-first NFL. But with Carimi already selected by the Pats, it doesn't make much sense to nab a second tackle. So Pouncey it is. Boy would I hate to see the Pats get the youngster, but you better believe that if he falls this far, Bill Belichick and the Pats front office would definitely resist the temptation to trade out of the pick in order to get Maurkice Pouncey's twin brother.

Yeah I still think he doesnt last past the Giants
I think the community picks are trying to make him fall to the late 20’s which I highly doubt he will.
So far I see Akeem Ayers to NYG a ridiculous reach, I also think Solder would go 22 to Indianapolis had he still been on the board and although it was your pick Michael, I would be shocked to see Phil Taylor drop past Kansas City at 21

yeah
agreed on all points; i made that chiefs pick hastily, probably not the best selection for them at that point. But yeah, Solder to Colts makes lots of sense.

Solder is not a good fit for the Colts
The two best OT fits for the Colts are Costanzo and Sherrod. I doubt they take Solder

Big Ben: 2 super bowl victories
Joe Flacco: 0 super bowl appearances
Mark Sanchez: 0 super bowl appearances
So for those of you who say Flacco and Sanchez are better postseason QB's than Big Ben because they have more road wins, go home and think about how dumb that reasoning is.

Without sounding rude
Why do you think Solder isn’t a fit for the Colts?

Possibly I guess, but I view Sherrod rawer than Solder

This is the pick I was originally leaning towards...
But, in all honesty, I would have taken Muhammad Wilkerson here. I spent a little time digging up some info on him, as he is the player graded first round I know the least about. I agree with Steeler_ that the chances of Pouncey getting past New York are slim, and I wouldn’t really be surprised if Miami snagged him even earlier when all is said and done.
Don’t disagree at all with the pick. I think many of us (maybe myself included) purposely skipped him over when other teams would have snagged him. Hopes and dreams, hopes and dreams.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

I'm not worried
as soon as Pouncey’s first contract is up he’ll come to Pittsburgh and play with his brother. :D:D:D:D::D:D Happy thoughts!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not want Pouncey at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Especially do not want two 1st rounders spent on the offensive line with both the defense in need of so much help, and at least 4 more picks in the next 2 rounds. We come out of the 1st round with no elite talent lining up to come off the edge? Where’s the improvement over last year’s D coming from?
As I’ve said before (I’ll tone it down, given the location), I thought Maurkice was over-rated last year, and his brother is benefiting from the name on the back of his jersey (although 28 would not be a reach). With Wilkerson still there, he would have been a much better pick than a Guard (and I’m a little surprised NYSteelersFan4 didn’t make the pick, all appearances were Wilkerson was his guy from correspondence at PP).
If you want this draft to be a little more “realistic” (ie Pouncey gone well before the Steelers pick), then I can understand removing Pouncey from the list of options.

How can you say he was overrated
Other than the fact that you never actually watched him?
If you had you would know that Maurkice was a Rookie Center making the calls for an offensive line that saw about a dozen different starters throughout the year, and he was the only stable part of the whole group. I would call him a MAJOR contributor to the Steelers getting to the super bowl and Rashard hitting 1200 yards, so i guess he’s over-rated.
And i dont see anything wrong with 2 OLine picks for the Pats, anything to keep Tom’s Ponytail from getting dirty, Belichick will do it.

How in the heck was Maurkice overrated? He dominated at the college level.

I'll say this, but before I do, I do think Maurkice played extremely well last year.
I think Maurkice played at an 8, and was proclaimed a 10. That said, an 8 is pretty dang good for a rookie.
He exceeded all our expectations last year, and did an excellent job with everything he was asked to do, but, I didn’t see him as a Pro Bowler despite all of that. Will he be absolutely great for us for years to come, there is no doubt at all in my mind. But was he one of the top two/ three centers in the AFC last year… I just don’t know that. I think the Pro Bowl is a crock anyway, but that’s besides the point.
Now, it all depends on how you’re looking at it. I would never say he was over-rated. The guy is a hell of a player who will only get better. Perhaps slightly over-hyped, but given what we have had on the line for the last few years, excitement at actual top-tier talent is understandable from the fanbase.
I will agree that Mike is benefiting from his brother’s great year, and that will push him higher in the draft than his skills probably should, but that’s fairly common in the NFL so I can’t hold it against him at all.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

The way I read his comment
It sounded like he was talking about the draft. He was saying Maurkice was overrated in the draft. I could be wrong though.

I don’t fully agree, but I do see where the logic comes from.

Overrated as
I didn’t think he was the 2nd best center in the league last year.

Maybe he is the best center in the league in 2 years' time
(if we ever play football again), but I don’t think he was worthy of an All-Pro last year.

The best players don't always go to the Pro Bowl
Another good example, Jerod Mayo.

I agree
Getting two first round OLs would give Brady a few more years by lowering the hits he will see by a weakened OL. This would be my strategy (although I can almost guarantee the Pats dont use one of these picks and trade for a #1 next year.
Word to the wise, if the Pats are willing to trade down with you, it means you are getting hosed.

thats why they make trades to the likes of the raiders. no way a team like the steelers or ravens would take some of hte trades the pats have pulled off.
by steelerintexas on Apr 2, 2011 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Part of that is who the player is.
Certain teams have traded together on plenty of occasions. Like working together with someone you have confidence in. The Steelers rely on the draft because you guys are not big spenders. You don’t run to free agents and throw money in their faces. Which can be a good thing. The Patriots have done a good job with using the draft to make themselves better. Regardless of who the trade partner is.
well yall screwed the raiders when you traded for rany moss. you screwed the vikings when you traded away randy moss. and i think the raiders paid too much for richard seymour. but as long as tom brady is around it wont matter who yall plug in the team is going to do pretty stinking well,.

It wasnt a dig at the Patriots
I was just trying to say that the Pats always trade with dumb teams who take major risks and usually give up too much.
The Pats get better that way, good for them. But they havent made a fair trade in the BB/Tom Brady era.

I'm not mad.
Nor am I saying that these teams are stupid. Just desperate. We have made trades with the Ravens before. That was more based on the draft though. If you come out on the better end of a trade, its because you did your homework.
