Pre-Draft Visits: Why You Should Watch the Later Round Guys
It is the off-season and the Steelers like every other team in the National Football League are allow to bring in 30 prospects for workouts. How much do these visits matter? If a guy visits is it a lock that they are going to be picked by the Steelers in the draft? To answer this I have provided a list of players who visited the Steelers and were either drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent. I have also included the round in which they were drafted.
2008:
Ryan Mundy, S (6th)
Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon (5th)
2009:
A.Q. Shipley, C, Penn State (7th)
Ra'Shon Harris, DT, Oregon (6th)
Joe Burnett, CB, Central Florida (5th)
Frank Summers, FB, UNLV (5th)
2010:
Florida C Maurkice Pouncey (1st)
SMU WR Emmanuel Sanders (3rd)
Central Michigan WR Antonio Brown (6th)
Notice a pattern?Only Maurkice Pouncey was a first round draft choice. The rest of these prospects were drafted in the fifth round or fewer. Also everyone of these prospects filled a need for the Steelers. The Steelers are also averaging three prospects a year that visited and were drafted. So who will it be this year? Here is the list of prospects who will be visiting or have visited, along with projected rounds.
Edmund Gates, WR, Abilene Christian (Rd 3-4)
- Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor ( Rd 1-2)
- Cortez Allen, CB, Citadel (Rd 4-5)
- Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia ( Rd 2)
- Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State ( Rd4-5)
- Da’rel Scott, RB, Maryland (Rd 5-6)
- James Carpenter, T, Alabama ( Rd 2-3)
- Marcus Gilbert, T, Florida (Rd 3-4)
- Jarriel King, T, South Carolina ( Rd 7-FA)
- Kenrick Ellis, DT, Hampton (Rd 2-3)
- Jon Baldwin, WR (Rd 2)
- Jason Pinkston, T ( Rd 3-4)
- Dion Lewis, RB (Rd 6-7)
- Henry Hynoski, FB (Rd 5-6)
- Jabaal Sheard, DE ( Rd 1-2)
- Greg Romeus, DE (Rd 4)
- Dom DiCicco, SS (Rd 7)
Essentially throw out the first and second round prospects and here is the list;
Da’rel Scott, RB, Maryland (Rd 5-6) Greg Romeus, DE (Rd 4)
Jarriel King, T, South Carolina ( Rd 7-FA) Edmund Gates, WR, Abilene Christian (Rd 3-4)
Dion Lewis, RB (Rd 6-7) Cortez Allen, CB, Citadel (Rd 4-5)
Henry Hynoski, FB (Rd 5-6) Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State ( Rd4-5)
Dom DiCicco, SS (Rd 7) Marcus Gilbert, T, Florida (Rd 3-4)
Jason Pinkston, T ( Rd 3-4)
Take a good look. If the patter keeps up any where from 2-4 of these guy could be wearing the Black and Gold in the fall.
If I had to choose the three, I think that will be chosen ( either drafted or signed) I would say:
Cortez Allen CB, Da'rell Scott RB, Marcus Gilbert OT

Da'Rel Scott would be a great project player

To borrow part of Jerry Jones quote from America's Game
“If someone told you that in the sixth round scouting paid off…” then they were probably talking about the Steelers!
I think that was more like 11th round scouting

My money would be on Pettis and Cortez
Pettis, cuz he would make one helluva player, and Cortez cuz he’s got one helluva name.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I think
I think it will be between Da’Rel Scott, Dion Lewis and Cortez Allen. The 2 RB are play makers and Allen is a big corner with decent speed the Steelers like that in their CB and could be a ST if on roster. My money is on the RBs though
Greg Romeus

The Pitt Guys
Per NFL draft rules the visits do not count against the 30 if the players campus is in or connected to a suberb of the metropolitan area in which they play. So the visits by the Pitt kids I take much lighter than some of the other guys on the list.
Sorry this list doesn't include suspected visits
So Curtis Brown, Cameron Jordan, Martez Harley, Frank Kearse, Zach Clayton, Taiwan Jones, all not on the list. When and if they ever report all the prospects who have visited then I might make another updated one. I like some of those guys better
Whatever it was, I want some. NAO!
A long way from Pittsburgh PA, in fact, 8653.2 miles to be precise. My blood still bleeds black and gold like the rest of Steeler Nation, proud fan since 2002.

On the quote under your picture
Cris Carter should definitely be in the Hall, same with Reed and Kramer probably Guy (not a huge fan of kicker/punter going in) and possibly L.C. but Steve Tasker sorry he was a great St player but come on. And I am in the minority but Pat Tillman wasn’t a Hall of Fame safety he was barely above average but everyone in AZ here want him in the hall of Fame. Great guy horrible circumstances but not a Hall of Famer.
Tillman had developed into a pro bowl caliber S when he left to join the armed forces, but I think the big push for his HOF induction is more due to his service. HOF character, morals, leadership, honor, and balls, but not playing ability.
Ray Guy was a once in a lifetime player, if any kicker/punter should be inducted he is the guy. A punter drafted in the 1st round, with a broken foot no less, and is later given consideration as one of the greatest draft day steals of all time.

I agree about Tasker, though he embodied everything you want in a player.
