BTSC 2011 Community Mock Draft Pick No. 52 -- New York Giants Select Mason Foster, LB, Washington
No word from PCISteeler so I'll go ahead and make a selection for the New York Giants at No. 52. I know PCI is a North Carolina resident, so hopefully he and his family are safe in the aftermath of the string of tornadoes that swept throughout the region recently. Next up: the Indianapolis Colts, represented by barnerburner. - Michael B. -

You may not have heard his name much, if at all, this draft season, but he's a guy that I think might be quietly shooting up draft boards. He's Mason Foster, middle linebacker from the University of Washington. I have had a chance to watch Foster play a fair amount since I moved up to Seattle two college football seasons ago. He's a tackling machine and a legitimate leader -- a necessary trait for ILB/MLBs.
Foster's tackle total last season (163) was the highest total for a Pac-10 player since 1989. That impressive number is also more than guys like Patrick Willis, A.J. Hawk and Rolando McClain had in their final season in college. Foster also led the conference in tackles as a sophomore in '08 (105). Tackle stats don't always tell the whole story of a player's impact, but Foster also showed his versatility while being utilized in different ways over the course of his four years at UW. He rushed the passer fairly well (7 sacks as a senior), and he showed a nose for the football by forcing six fumbles and picking off three passes during his junior season.
I know that we had the Giants selecting Akeem Ayers in the first round, but I personally wouldn't have gone with a pass rushing OLB in the first round, and instead tried to nab a solid OL or CB prospect. Even so, Foster I think would provide a solid upgrade over Jonathan Goff at MLB for the Giants.

Hey!!!I I had the pick
I didnt email it to you and I just got back from work. Sorry Michael, I should have sent it sooner. We are doing fine after the tornadoes. Had a really close call, but my family is doing well. The town to the south unfortunately cant say that.
"Franco made that play because he never quit on the play. He kept running, he kept hustling. Good things happen to people who hustle."
I had Marcus Cannon going with that pick.
They have needs on their Offensive Line, especially with their Guards. They are very high on Pouncey but in this draft they drafted Ayers. I also thought of picking the best available corner in Dowling or Patrick out of UL. But solid choice with Foster.

sorry man
Shit, if you did a write up, we can still post it. I can delete this. Anyway, glad you are safe!

double-dipping at linebacker?
I mean sure, it’s been done before (Colbert 07) to great effect, but a lineman would fill a bigger need and there are several options available..
triple
Colbert triple-dipped last year (Worilds, Gibson, Sylvester).

true, but arguably none made a tangible effect
Gibson was lost to free agency, worilds deep on the bench, sylvester a few ST impacts…07 was the best LB/LB 1/2 picks in terms of actual impact imo, and I don’t think the Giants are going to need MLB as much as adding a top/second-tier talent in the o-line
STs
Other than Worilds, I think those picks were aimed at STs, because they sucked so bad in 09.

Drafted for ST and depth
The Steelers had all the starters they needed at LB but they did need young blood to develop behind the starters. As Wolfpac mentioned, we were terrible at special teams and these guys were all expected to contribute on special teams as they learned their roles.
