I'm all mocked out

As you all know, I recently finished my final 2011 mock draft of the year. It has been a long 3 to 4 months of watching film, analyzing film, figuring out each team's needs, finding out each GM's drafting style (including but not limited to the age of the prospects they draft, the type of players, the character, and BPA vs. need), and more. I now will leave you with my final pre-draft post of the year (I will have multiple posts out within a week following the draft analyzing each pick, previewing their impacts, and predicting the 2011-2012 season). This post is meant to analyze a given scenario and see what it leaves us with. You will get it by the end

Star-divide

In the 2011 draft, the Steelers picks are Brandon Harris, Marcus Gilbert, John Moffit, Robert Sands, Rob Housler, Kris Duhram (he is a 6'3" WR in-case you don't know who he is), and Marc Schiechl (OLB from an incredibly small school). Obviously this would not be our ideal scenario (for someone it might be) but it leaves us with 7 very talented players that could eventually contribute to our organization. But where exactly would these players fit in for 2011-2012. Lets see.

Who do we resign?

Chris Hoke, Nick Eason, Shaun Shuisham, LaMarr Woodley, Ike Taylor, Willie Colon, Doug Legursky, Keyron Fox, Ryan Mundy, Dennis Dixon, Tony Hills, Limas Sweed

Who do we let go?

Jonathon Scott, William Gay, Matt Spaeth, Anthony Madison, Trai Essex, Jeremy Kapinos

That leaves us with only 6 open roster spots, of which I think 1 will be filled through FA

Which brings us down to 5 open roster spots

Which rookies make the roster?

Brandon Harris, Marcus Gilbert, John Moffit, Robert Sands, Rob Housler

Would the 2 rookies who don't make the roster make the PS?

Probably yes. Both of these players are relatively under the radar and could likely make it to the PS without being claimed off waivers.

Would they ever make the squad?

I think Durham would compete with Sweed as the potential replacement to Hines Ward. That means one would end up being cut or end up as the #5. I think Sweed is more likely to become the #1 which would leave Durham as a very talented #5. He would probably end up leaving within 3 years in this scenario. Schiechl could become a very good OLB. He has a lot to work on but if he is coached right I could see him becoming our next pro-bowl OLB. So he will end up making the NFL roster IMO.

What would our roster look like for 2011-2012?

These are listed in the order they would be playing (so the 3rd CB listed would be the nickel)

QB: Big Ben, Dixon, Batch, Leftwich

RB: Mendy, Redman, Dwyer

TE: Miller, Housler, Johnson

WR: Ward, Wallace, Sanders, Brown, Randel-El, Battle

LT: Starks, Gilbert, Hills

LG: Kemo, Legursky, Moffit

C: Pouncey, Legursky

RG: Colon, Moffit, Legursky

RT: Adams, C.Scott, Hills

DE: Smith, Kiesel, Hood, Eason

NT: Hampton, Hoke, Harris

OLB1: Deebo, Timmons

OLB2: Woodley, Worilds

ILB1: Timmons, Foote

ILB2: Farrior, Sylvester, Fox

CB: Taylor, Butler, Harris, BMAC, Lewis

FS: Clark, Mundy

SS: Polamalu, Sands, Allen

K: Shuisham

P: Sepulveda

What would you think about this roster? Who would you change in the resignings? How would you rate that draft (1-10 with 1 being the worst)?

I think Sweed could make the roster

BTW, thanks for all the hard work you’ve put in. This forum would have been far more empty without your stuff.

wow

you’re like a machine with this stuff.

I’d give the draft a 6 or 7 I guess.

I doubt that you’ll see 2 OL in the first 3 rounds. I like the Gilbert pick a lot. Could start at OG for a year. Consider also that C. Scott will be in the mix.

I’ve been trying to read the tea leaves on the D-line this offseason. The team has brought in a lot of NT prospects and only one DE prospect. To me this means that Hoke is done and they’re going to bring in a NT this year. If they don’t get a guy, Hoke will be back. I don’t see them carrying 3 NT to collectively play 25 snaps a game. I think it’s Harris vs. Eason for the last DE spot with a rookie / Hoke penciled in at NT. If someone falls to them at DE in the draft, then maybe they carry an extra D-lineman.

I think Housler might end up being Spaeth 2.0, the second TE needs to be able to block. Housler is only 244 lb and needs a year.

I don’t really see the Sands move. Unless you’re trying to get Mike Logan to come back and coach the all Mountaineer second string safeties… Maybe BMac is worth a look at FS?

OLB is not going to be 3 guys with Timmons on the depth chart. That was maybe ok when he was splitting time with Foote but there’s going to be a 4th guy in there. Consider as well that there’s no guarantee that Woodley will be around long term and Harrison is getting older.

I’d say Sweed is more likely to make the roster than ARE. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tyler Grisham make the roster as a ST playing WR depth guy.

I’d rather have Anthony Madison than K. Lewis at this point as well. He improved at CB last year and he’s valuable to ST play.

Maybe you’ll only see one of Foote / Fox

If you get rid of Kapinos, you need to add another PSU guy or you’ll never make it to the superbowl. Maybe Brett Bracket at WR in the 7th? Colin Wagner UDFA to compete with Suisham maybe.

How about gettin rid of 1 of those qbs?

Do we need Lefty? Dixon? or Batch? A lot has been said of having Batch as a qb coach. I dont think he is ready to retire and still has a great chance to win some games if he starts. How about trading Lefty for some picks? Maybe send a good looking trade package to move up in the first round?
Just some food for thought

6 out of 10

The first three picks aren’t bad. There is a reason why there aren’t 6’4" 220 pounds safeties in the NFL like Sands though. His only shot is at SS but Mundy is a decent enough backup. I don’t see the Steelers ignoring an aging DL. I could see them taking possibly two but at least one in the draft. I’d give it a 6 nothing more.

4 QB’s? That is totally unnecessary, especially for a team like Pittsburgh.

I Thought So Too, but...

Legs is mentioned 3 times, Hills, Moffit, and Timmons twice.

Appreciate all your hard Work!

Think that we re-sign Madison, Kapinos and J. Scott, plus Spaeth if we don’t draft a TE. gay is a possibility, depending how the draft goes. Fox is not going to be re- signed IMO; T. Hills will not be on the team out of camp…C. Scott will be battling rookie(s)…D. Dixon may not make it out of camp. I think that McClendon makes the team before Harris and they both will be battling a rookie DL, not Hoke or Eason. just my 2 cents.

Dixon's a RFA and they tendered him a contract

So I expect he’ll make it. I expect that either Lefty or Batch gets cut before Dixon. They definitely will go with only 3 QB’s this year. In years past we never kept a 3rd stringer, I can’t see them holding 4 at the expense of depth at other positions.

What about Memo?

I didn’t see him on your RB list, but I also didn’t see his name on players we don’t resign or keep. Is is a long lost conclusion in your opinion that we don’t resign Memo?

Also, Pitt only kept 3 active QB’s at any time on their roster during the season. They won’t keep 4 on the roster.

My appreciation to all of your hard work. Much more of a bearable Feb, Mar, April because of your posts.

I would replace Sands...

with Cortez Allen in the 4th, we have too many CB/FS guys aready on the roster we don’t need more safeties. Unsure of Moffit in the 3rd, I would prefer TE kendricks or DJ williams in the 3rd. Then give me Derrick Locke or Da’Rel Scott in the 5th instead of Housler. We have plenty of guard candidates.

Thanks for all the work

I am looking forward to see how close you, bigjay and all the others have been to the Steelers final choice.
