The night before the 2011 NFL combine at around 1AM, I published some pre-combine thoughts that were not well developed but ended up being a good discussion starter. Since I am still up at 1:30 A.M. and it is the night before the draft I will leave you guys with these thoughts that are intended to start a discussion
Cam Newton as the #1 pick makes the most sense: I have spent months analyzing Cam Newton and recently I figured him out. No-one can question his on the field skill. While he still needs to improve in some areas, there is no denying his work ethic and athleticism that he will be a good on the field QB. What people question is his off the field character. To me this makes no sense. The controversy from this year had to deal with his FATHER'S issues not his. Cam Newton had nothing to do with Cecil Newton's stupidity. The only thing that shows me that Cam Newton might have a character concern was stealing a laptop while at University of Florida. However, I am willing to write that off as just being immature. Thus, I see no major flaws in Cam Newton's armor and he should and probably will be the #1 pick tomorrow at 8 P.M. at Radio City Music Hall.
The two safest players in this draft are Marcell Dareus and Patrick Peterson: I have analyzed who the players with the lowest risks are and again, it is clear that Dareus and Peterson are the safest picks. Both have dominated the SEC at their respective positions for two years. Fairley and Newton, only 1 year. Bowers only 1 year. Miller only 1 year. Amukamara 1 and a half years.
This will be the craziest draft ever: I think this draft will feature quite a few odd things. We will see more teams draft for need over BPA than we have ever seen before. I also think we will see more 2012 picks traded than we have ever seen. Teams that are in desperate need of a position will be willing to give up a 2012 pick of equal round and a late round 2011 pick to try and fill this huge need, thinking that filling this need will make them playoff and Super Bowl contenders. This draft could feature 7 QB's taken in the first 35 picks but only 4 in the first 32. I think we are going to see a stretch of three straight QB's when the 2nd round begins on Friday night. The Pats will trade their pick for a 2012 pick and the run will start. Team X, the Bills, and the Bengals will all take QB's at 33, 34, and 35.
- This will be the best draft ever: I truly think this draft will out-do last years awesome draft. Whether it is getting to discuss each pick with you guys on BTSC, or watching how teams go insane trying to fill their needs, or watching Mike Pouncey fall to the Steelers at 31, or reading the celebratory comments after this happens it is going to be awesome
