Analyzing the Steelers first round draft pick of Cameron Heyward

Just hours after one of the weirdest 1st rounds in recent memory, I have taken the time to put together this post analyzing the Cameron Heyward pick at 31 in the first round. When I saw Prince Amukamara available at 19 I said if he fell one more spot the Steelers should trade up for him. Well he didn't and he was picked at 19. Then I set my sites on Cameron Jordan. I thought we should have made a deal with the Saints to get him but we stayed put. Then I set my sites on Jimmy Smith who was taken by the hated Ratbirds at 26. Then I turned my sites to Gabe Carimi. Well, that did not last long at 29. By the 30th pick, I knew that we would be taking a DE. I have Wilkerson and Heyward just one spot different from each other so I was going to be a happy man. The Jets took Wilkerson leaving us with the obvious choice of Cameron Heyward. Kevin Colbert thought it was obvious as well, as they made the fastest pick of the draft. The other available options were Derek Sherrod, Stephen Paea, Brandon Harris, Aaron Williams, and Rahim Moore. I think Heyward is by far the best option.

Heyward has played a significant amount of 5-tech at Ohio State. He is fundamentally sound, has great size, a great motor and has all the intangibles. He knows how to push the pocket, he holds his own against the run, he loves the Steelers, and he has a great family around him. While this pick is not the sexy pick, he is clearly the best pick. He the will immediately contribute as a backup DE and should see the field often in 2011. By 2012, he should be able to contribute significantly. What I love about Heyward is that he wanted to be a Steeler. I could sense it the entire draft process that the two players who wanted to be a Steeler the most were Mike Pouncey and Cameron Heyward. At the end of the night, I think it is clear that once again, our genius Kevin Colbert has struck again. Maybe this year people will be questioning the pick but as we get further and further away from this draft, the pick will only become better and better. I think Hood and Heyward should give us bookend pro-bowl DE's for a decade.

Great job Kevin Colbert and welcome to our family, Cameron Heyward

I will have analysis of our 2nd and 3rd  round picks after they happen and same for round 4 through 7 but I am going to save giving out grades until I see what happens with the rest of the draft.
