My prediction of the 53 man roster

Obviously this is all speculation as we have no idea who the Steelers will/won't resign. However here is what I am thinking we will do.

Star-divide

QB Ben Roethlisberger (1) Byron Leftwitch (2) Charlie Batch (3)
HB Rashard Mendenhall (4) Isaac Redman (5) Baron Batch (6) Jonathan Dwyer (38)
TE/FB Heath Miller (7) Matt Spaeth (8) David Johnson (9)
LT Max Starks (10) Jonathan Scott (11) Chris Scott (12)
LG Chris Kemouatu (13) Doug Legursky (14) Ramon Foster (15)
OC Maurkice Pouncey (16) Doug Legursky
RG Marcus Gilbert (17) Trai Essex (18) Ramon Foster
RT Flozell Adams (19) Trai Essex Chris Scott
WR Hines Ward (20) Mike Wallace (21) Emmanuel Sanders (22) Antonio Brown (23) Limas Sweed (24)
LDE Brett Kiesel (25) Cameron Heyward (26)
NT Casey Hampton (27) Chris Hoke (28) Steve McClendon (29)
RDE Aaron Smith (30) Ziggy Hood (31) Steve McClendon
LOLB James Harrison (32) Chris Carter (33) Lawrence Timmons (34)
LILB Lawrence Timmons Stevenson Sylvester(35)
RILB James Farrior (36) Larry Foote (37)
ROLB Lamaar Woodley (39) Jason Worilds (40)
CB Ike Taylor (41) Bryant McFadden (42) Curtis Brown (43) Willie Gay (44) Credzon Butler (45) Cortez Allen (46)
FS Ryan Clark (47) Will Allen (48)
SS Troy Polamalu (49) Ryan Mundy (50)
K Shaun Shuisham (51)
P Daniel Sepulveda (52)
LS Greg Warren (53)

I think the players who won't be back with us are: Nick Eason, Mewelde Moore, Dennis Dixon, Anthony Madison, Will Allen, Jeremy Kapinos, Keenan Lewis, Antwaan Randel-El, Arnaz Battle, Willie Colon, and I don't think Keith Williams will make the team but I do think he will make it to the PS without being claimed.

I like what you’ve done here basically, with a few little qualms.

A lot of the backup position battles could go in any number of ways, although i doubt given the lockout shorted offseason DCS is going to unseat Will Allen. He’s certainly not an ideal player there, but he knows the system and is a reliable ST player. Although i’m totally with you on how CB will break down.

Keith Williams and Chris Scott are toss ups to me as well.

The biggest mystery for me is how WR is gonna shake out. Ward, Wallace, Sanders, and Brown are almost givens. Then you’ve got Sweed, ARE, and Battle going at it for the 5th and possibly 6th spot. That will be exciting to watch.

My question for you though, is do you really think the Steelers will go ahead with just 3 RB’s (Mendenhall, Redman, and Batch) and cut Dwyer?

Wait, okay, one more. Why keep three NT’s on the roster when the defense already spends almost 50% of its snaps in nickel and dime with the NT off the field?

Mclendon isnt a NT

as far as i can tell he only plays in sub packages, because he doesnt really fit in a 3-4. i might be wrong, but im pretty sure he plays DT when we switch to 4 man fronts and other weird packages Lebeau thinks up

that is why I have him listed as a NT also because he can play the DT spot when we line up with either 2 or 4 DL

Do you think we'd go for the triple down at RILB?

Or try and keep Dennis/ Cut Batch for Dennis? I’m not even a big fan of his, just a south QB thing.

I'd rather see

Williams over Essex and Lewis over Gay. I also think the Steelers will get another Kicker, I just dont trust Suisham for the long-haul, and there are some good (and probably cheaper) UDFA’s.

He has been

But I think he has more upside than Gay, but I agree, if he doesn’t do well, he needs to be let go during camp. At least Gay has shown he can play at this level, just not in a staring role, o reven the nickel so much anymore.

Lewis may have more upside, but...

he hasn’t shown the ability to realize it. I sure wish he would because I think he is physically an improvement, but it appears that the mental side is missing and that is where Gay has him clearly beat.

I thought Fox was a free agent?

I could easily see him cut due to the uncharacteristic special teams blunders he committed in the playoffs. Sly has already become the best special teamer on the team anyway.

I agree with everything else except for Gilbert starting at RG. I think Foster continues to get better and takes over that spot, with Keith Williams as one of the backup guards. Gilbert might be getting groomed to take over the LT spot in a year or two. If Starks and Scott can play LT, anybody can.

by StoneColdSteel on May 11, 2011 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

Who will play RT? Im skeptical about Colon being back and Flozell wont be around for much longer.

Or if Colon can return to his 2009 form then he can play RT.

by StoneColdSteel on May 11, 2011 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt the staff will move Starks to RT

I think they will keep Starks to LT where they know what they have. I think they will put Gilbert at RT when Flozell retires then later if Starks leaves they will move Gilbert to LT. I like the thought of moving Starks to RT and starting Gilbert, I just doubt it will happen.

by steelerintexas on May 12, 2011 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt he sees hardly any action

Unless a stupid amount of injuries occur, I think the only action he sees is on extra points and field goals.

I can't see Cromartie over W. Allen

W. Allen was a beast last year when he filled in for Troy. Not too add he is a big contributor on ST. Too much value to dump IMO.

I also think if we keep Carter it means bye bye Fox. If Carter can be a STer Fox is not staying.

Thumbs up on the DL, although I think Ziggy starts over Smith.

Cutting Fox gives me one more roster spot which I would probably spend on Dwyer. I really do not see us cutting him unless he is a slacker in camp again, which I highly doubt.

Like this

I really like what you’ve done here. I just have a few nit-picky things I saw.

1) The WR camp battle: I like Sweed coming back strong and beating ARE and Battle. It’s more of a hope than anything else, because I haven’t seen anything that would indicate that it will happen. I’d love to see Sweed live up to his potential, because our offense could be legendary.

2) Trai Essex, Keith Williams, Chris Scott…not sure which one will win out there. Es-sux, as I have been calling him for years, has only held a spot because of his versatility. I thought he’s been pretty bad for a while. However, now that there is some depth at the Tackle position, and we have a younger guy in Marcus Gilbert who can play G or T, I could see him getting cut if the new guys show anything. 1 will be gone unless A) we re-sign Colon…in which case 2 of these guys are gone or B) Flozell retires…in which case they could all make the team. The only certainty here is that Tony Hills is GONE!

3) I agree 100% that Nick Eason should be gone…unless Heyward shows nothing in camp, which is not going to happen. However, what sorta bit us on the butt last year was not having enough depth on the DL, because we ended up losing Thaddeus Gibson, because they had to bring in another body for the DL (McClendon?). (I don’t really know how good Gibson would have been, but still…it stinks to lose a pick AFTER he made the cut). I think it’s going to be McClendon or Sonny Harris. Probably McClendon, because of the age of the 2 guys in front of him. Plus, the RDE and LDE are interchangeable, so if A.Smith goes down, Ziggy can play and Heyward can still be the backup for either side. If Big Snack goes down, his replacement is older and there is no one after him.

4) I don’t know what to make of the DB situation. You hate to see your draft picks get cut, because they COULD have potential. I don’t really see it happening. K. Lewis made a case to be the #2 before losing it in the Denver preseason game. Gay is a decent nickleback. One may have to go. Both may go. I don’t know. DRC is a guy who could also make waves.

5) I concur with Keyaron Fox. Keyaron Fox won’t be back for his bonehead play in big games. It’s different if you are a rookie, but he made some really DUMB plays when the game was on the line.

Ziggy & Hokie

will be the two down DL’s in passing situations w/Kiesel in there sometimes. I don’t think McClendon makes the 53-man squad. He was only there due to injuries. I think that Eason remains the 7th DL.

Eason

I have seen at least 1 report indicating that the Steelers intend upon bringing Heyward along slowly, and that they won’t rely upon Heyward as a primary backup. We will see how Hewyard does in camp, if there is a camp. However, the longer that the lockout lasts, the more likely it will be that the Steelers will keep veteran backups like Eason.

Believe Wes Lyons is being looked at as a tight-end; I'd bring K. Fox back ...

Lyons is 6’8’’, up to 245 lbs. now. I wouldn’t mind the Steelers having another TE on the roster who can actually run pass patterns and be a threat downfield. Also, I want Heath staying in less to block and more getting out and running pass patterns. Let D. Johnson stay in and help out the tackles. Still think they will resign Spaeth, though.

Fox made some bonehead plays on special teams with penalties, but he also looked pretty good in the games he started at ILB two years before. There is just no telling when Farrior will fall off the cliff, so I’d like to have another available body to plug in that knows the system and can also play teams. I know this is probably a very unpopular statement, but I’m resigning A. Madison for a year as well. The dude is a proven demon on special teams. You just don’t want him on the field in your base or nickel D.

by datruth4life2.0 on May 13, 2011 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

I thought the emergence of Worilds and Sly on ST are a "goodbye" to Madison

Along with Sanders and A. Brown, last years rookies made for a pretty awesome ST unit. All Madison needs to collect his walking papers is a good camp by any of the 1st or 2nd year corners. Lewis is a 3rd year, but I think he’s a headcase.

Questions

I don’t see why you have Denis Dixon not making the 53 man roster and Charlie Batch making it…that makes no sense whatsoever!!?? Really like to hear your reasoning on this.

I don’t think they dare get rid of Keenan Lewis yet, he is young and gifted. Carnell Lake will have an positive effect on him, just my beliefs.

I would like to see Willie Colon back, there is no way Jonathan Scott makes this team over Colon, if we re-sign Colon.

Finally, I think Nick Eason has some more productive years left in him and I don’t see McLendon beating him out.

by ColinP on May 17, 2011 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

Answers

Dennis Dixon has proven nothing in his years with the Steelers. Batch has proven that in a pinch, he can make the throws.

Lewis is gifted at what? At commiting dumb penalties? If either of the rookies show any promise, he is gone

I am asuming Colon is way to expensive for us and that we think Gilbert can replace him

Eason is also a product of too many young people left

Gilbert is not as good of a run blocker as Colon is

And he might actually be getting groomed to take over the LT spot in two years instead of RT.

Colon shouldn’t be all that expensive considering both he and his agent don’t know how well his Achilles will hold up.

by StoneColdSteel on May 19, 2011 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

ColinP, what is Keenan Lewis gifted at ... punching glass objects?

Cause it sure ain’t CB from what I’ve seen the past 2 years. Just not thinking that dog will hunt. If he doesn’t make it as a backup safety, I don’t see the Steelers keeping him this year (if there is football). Plus, he’s done ZERO on special teams that past two years. That’s normally a sign that a player can’t actually play the game. I’m much higher on C. Butler. But we’ll see.

Theres a reason

why he was competing with BMac for the #2 corner position before the season started

I love the Steelers.

There's also a reason

he couldn’t beat Anthony Madison for the dime spot.

The reasons that we're here! (Earth, Wind, and fire)

man i don’t know what happened during the season, maybe tomlin wasn’t comfortable with him out there. But I do know this, we’ll see what he has in training camp and if he gets cut, he gets cut, if he doesnt then thats good for us.

I love the Steelers.

Earthwind Moreland?

His mammy named him after her favorite band. Can you guess what band it was?

Hell, with all the bonehead penalties he was committing on ST, I didn’t want him out on defense either.

Foote

Sorry for the late comment, just seeing this now. I think Foote’s job could be in danger, and I don’t think Lefty, ARE, Melwede, and Fox will be back. I’d like to see them keep some of the younger guys in their places. Also wanted to give a shout out to FLO, who really stepped up and helped us out last year.
