Nnamdi Asomugha a Steeler?

I know this is perhaps a crazy idea. The Steelers do not build a team through free agency. I think we can all agree that this is the best policy, but what if one player can put you over the top? I believe Nnamdi Asomugha is this man. Why not? The Defense is aging and while Colbert is doing a great job reloading, at some point in the next few years the Defense will temporarily take a nose dive as the new young core transitions in taking the place of Hampton, Smith, Keisel, Farrior, and sadly eventually even Harrison and Polamalu. I think there is at least one more great year from this aging squad, so why not sure up the secondary and pay up to Asomugha? I think a player like him could very well make the difference between Big Ben hoisting the Lombardi trophy this past year instead of Rodgers. Your thoughts?

yes you are correct its not a long term solution

I agree that we shouldn’t sell our soul for the guy, but his immediate return I’m arguing, i.e. his value for one or two seasons could be enough to propel the steelers to a super bowl before the window of opportunity closes on this squad

What good would signing him if opposing QBs only target McFadden and Gay?

Having Nnamdi is fools gold if your two next corners are average/below average.

If we want to propel ourselves to another two Super Bowls, then the o-line has to be fixed. Ben is the biggest reason why this organization has been in the big game 3 out of the last 6 years and they need to make sure that they protect their investment more. Once he’s in his 30’s those hits that he just shrugs off won’t be so easy to recover from. The secondary is a pressing issue, but protecting your franchise QB is #1 on the list IMO.

Adding another dynamic receiver could be a good way to go as well.

i concur...

Our problem would not improve by replacing Ike with Nnamdi. However if McFadden was replaced with Nnamdi, that might help a wee bit.

not saying that it would be possible..

just stating that the only way it would be a marked improvement is if we replaced one of the 2nd tier guys instead of Ike. I know there is no way they would pay what he will require.

And why would he sign a 1-2 year deal?

When this could be the last huge paycheck he gets.

and besides

Nnamdi is only 29, hardly long in the tooth quite yet

people seem to have this idea

that players die at 30 or something. it really doesnt make a lot of sense

by hasay on May 20, 2011 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

its just that most players start to decline after 30. not all, but it is generally seen this way in football and basketball

It is either Nnamdi or Taylor

And if we go Nnamdi that means they have to free up about 3 extra million

A pipe dream for Steelers fans

Word is that Houston and Tampa Bay are the two front runners. Both have money, cap space and a need. TB, because they need to attract ho-hum fans with a splash signinf and Barber is getting up in age. Houston, because they spent their draft on defense, but still need that one corner.

no thanks. unless he signs for much less than he is worth. And the Steelers do not often offer contracts to players below what they are worth.

We need Ike and an upgrade at the nickel and dime. We should have that this year.

If this was baseball

I would jump all over this. You are right, it is rare you can make your defense as great as he would make this one. But in a league with a cap, and when there is a need to develop for the future constantly, this would be a terribly foolish idea, unless of course he decided he hated money and signed for something like 8-10 million per for 3 years.

We don’t have the money for both Ike and Nnamdi and honestly I’d rather have Ike. He knows our system, is still in his prime, and throughout his career has shown nothing but loyalty to the Steelers. If we’re going into the free agency pool I’d rather us go O-line. When the offense can sustain drives and win the time of possession, the Steelers are nearly impossible to beat.

unless he's willing to take a cut to come play for us

we’d end up getting in a huge bidding war for him and we could probably get another solid #1 CB for a lot less (like keeping ike).

Scrabble

I don’t think there is any Steeler fan who wouldn’t like Scrabble on the team. However, he’s going to be the most sought after FA and the Steelers just don’t get into bidding wars. He’s going to be paid a ton and it’s not going to be from the Steelers.

Proud fan of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams and the Pirates too.

Didn't know we needed one more player to get us over the hump.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

To make the chances of signing Asomugha even worse

There is a chance we may have to deal with last years free agency rules, especailly if the lockout gets lifted permanently. If thats the case than we will have to deal with that rule that makes the final 8 have serious restrictions on free agency and IIRC the rules are strict enough there is no way we can sign Asomugha to even close to what he is worth.

$20 limit?

Hell, we could sign a large pepperoni, a 2-liter and an order of cheesy breadsticks, and then cut William Gay.

We need a kindler, gentler football player.

nnamdi in perspective

think about it, when was the last time an impact player this good with no injuries or discipline problems went on the market? steelers, packers, pats would never pay the kind of $ he will command but without a salary cap why wouldn’t dallas or wash pay him $15 to $20mm a year? for teams like them making $100mm+ a year this is no stretch.

nnamdi has to be one of the top 5 or 10 free agents in the last decade to make it to market. if there is no salary cap he will definitely get paid more than his last contract and who knows how much higher.

brees may have been one of the best FA signings in history but because his shoulder was busted up only NO and MIA were interested when he was cut.

but the list is very short when we talk about this kind of prime talent hitting the free market

deion sanders
reggie white
rod woodson
bill romanowski
kurt warner
shannon sharpe

when you think about it, in the NFL it is very hard to get to a big payday in FA. your career is so short and if you are a known SB caliber QB your team will never let you go unless you go to jail or get injured. imagine if players could move in football like the NBA players did this year. it would be crazy, like maybe the equivalent of 30 of the top 100 NFL players changing teams.

in the NFL it is very rare that a top 50 player in their prime change teams (thru trade or FA). so if you can sqeeze them under the cap and you have the profits you would be stupid not to go after them. this is what the redskins try to do every year but they invariably go after the wrong players. the redskins should have passed on albert and gone balls out on nnamdi. but such is the curse of bad personnel decisions and the main reason they are sucking under snyder. hopefully the cowboys and redskins never get great talent evaluators and a soft salary cap, that could spell trouble.
