Poll - Cook: Steelers should look into bringing back Plax

The Post-Gazette's Ron Cook advocates a return of Plaxico Burress to the Steelers, in the following story Sunday:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11149/1149995-87-0.stm?cmpid=cook.xml

Personally, I think he's both dreaming in 3-D iMax and underestimating the team's WR corps.  On the first count, the team got rid last year of Santonio Holmes for violating personal conduct rules and failing a drug test, on the heels of the Ben Roethlisberger story.  What message does signing an over-the-hill ex-con send, especially to our young WR corps?  Second, many teams claim to be interested, and the guy's agent is Drew Rosenhaus.  Good luck trying to get a reasonable price for what would amount to, at best a WR3 on our team.

Poll
Should the Steelers look into signing Plaxico Burress, once released, lock-out over, FA opens, etc., etc.?
Yes, he's served his time, learned his lesson, and would be a great vet influence, especially once Hines hangs it up
23 votes
No, he'd be yet another locker room cancer and would send the wrong message to younger players
95 votes
Yes, but only at the right price
34 votes
His agent's Drew Rosenhaus, and several teams are interested: no way we can afford him

honestly with these sorts of things

the biggest deciding factor is whether or not we sign him. (as weird as that sounds) if we did sign him, i would be relatively confident that he had legitimately turned things around. i voted in favor of signing him, but really i only want the FO to at least look into it.

by hasay on May 30, 2011 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

i know what you mean

the FO has earned a good amount of leeway with me. if they did sign him, id trust that it was the right move. its like the draft, sure heyward wasnt my first choice, but i trust that they’re making the right decision. but like i said below i dont see any upside to doing it and i doubt they would see any either.

"turn things around"

Plax wasn’t exactly doing awful things (at least from the information out there). He had an unregistered gun, which is bad, but he had it for protection. He didn’t have it to “pop caps in MFers”.

I would take him for “if the price is right”, which it won’t be. If we could have him or Sweed in our WR group, it’d add another dimension we are missing.

Try tilting your head to the side. If not, think “What Would LaCharles Bentley Do?”

lol

@John Stephens

But seriously, if we have Sweed in our WR group, it won’t be because somebody isn’t doing their job, it’ll be because Sweed finally turned the corner and is living up to his potential. If that is the case then he absolutely deserves a spot in the WR group.

I love the Steelers.

the lockout needs to end so we cant stop talking about things like this

signing plax would only hurt us. he’s a locker room cancer who would only hurt the development of sanders and brown (and sweed). people forget that before he put a hole in his own leg he was skipping meetings and being a huge pain in the ass for the giants. coughlin was getting sick of him and there’s no way tomlin would tolerate him. id rather bring willie parker back than plax, and i dont even want parker.

How many more LaCharles’s comments do we need to fulfill our offseason quota?

Conisdering that we haven’t heard a ton of them this offseason, I am going to have to agree with WVPiratesfan and say a lot more. We are better than that.

How long is a piece of string?

A long way from Pittsburgh PA, in fact, 8653.2 miles to be precise. My blood still bleeds black and gold like the rest of Steeler Nation, proud fan since 2002.

I say pass

We don’t run the same offense we ran when Plex was last here, so he’d have to learn it all again like a rookie. He’s an extremely talented WR if he can come back to what he was, but that’s risky, and with the WR corps that we have I don’t think we need to gamble at that position. I hope the best for him, I’d love to see what he could do in say, STL or Detroit, but if the Steelers have the ability to take on that kinda salary, I’d rather see it go towards resigning Ike Taylor.

Man, now that I think about it, Detroit would be perfect for him. He’s a big target, which is a favorite of young QB’s, he’d be the clear #2 receiver there whereas everywhere else he’s played he’s been kinda the #1 but kinda not the #1. He’d allow Titus Young to slide naturally into the slot where he could be an absolute demon. Add to that a solid running game and an up and coming defense led by Suh and Fairley and that would be a pretty nice team.

No way , no day

Weve been there and done that , what more needs to be said ? Burress always was an ego maniac that was more concerned about how many catches he had , instead of how many wins his team had . Secondly , after all the legal attention thats been given to the team since the Ben Roethlisberger fiasco from a year ago , do you really think theyre going to go out and sign a CONVICTED FELON ? Sorry folks , aint gonna happen . Lastly , at the end of the day , do you really want a guy that carries a loaded weapon into a night club full of people and then almost kills himself with it . Bottom line , this guy is not real bright in case no ones noticed .

bottom line
this guy is not real bright in case no ones noticed .

not exactly a news flash there.

One unanswered question on this is if he’s lost any speed from shooting himself in the leg. No guarantee that he’s going to have the same wheels.

by Steely McSmash on May 31, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It took Vick

a full year in the NFL to get back up to speed and he was half a decade younger. burress wasn’t a ‘burner’ to begin with. Hines Ward is probably faster than him right now.

I love the Steelers.

I like the formulation - "Half a decade" seems a lot longer than 5 years

Steelers shouldn't even bother looking at any position other than DB

Plax can go to the Patriots.

"He had no teeth, and he was slobbering all over himself. I'm thinking, 'You can have your money back, just get me out of here. Let me go be an accountant." I can't tell you how badly I wanted out of there."

Frankly,

I don’t see him as an upgrade over any of the front four: Hines, Wallace, Sanders & Brown.

So i’d pass. If you’re gonna open the wallet- get some secondary or O-Line.

by crosby87 on May 31, 2011 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

No please

i think other teams like the Giants wants him back, or another option is he signs with the Eagles. That would make sense Vick and Plaxico on the same team. the only way it might happen if Sweed did not make roster. But i would rather take a chance on getting a wr on the next draft and stick with the receiving core of last season.

by J Lee on May 31, 2011 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

Plax would be an upgrade, most likely, in our fourth receiver spot at best.

I’m not really sure what Antonio Brown has done that has him entrenched as a bonafied receiving option in some’s minds. He showed promise, and speed, but the guy caught nine passes last year total, and had one really big one against Baltimore. That’s it. He’s shown potental as a returner. Let’s not over-state his prowess just yet.

I would also pass on Plax though. I wish him the best, but I never really cared for Plax personally. He’s got great talent, and he’s a good player, but he didn’t want to be here when he left last time and I don’t want someone who isn’t fully on board. I’m sure he’s a better person now, prison will do that. I know some of the guards who work where he is, and they say he’s still working out and running and looks good, but they’re prison guards and not proffessional scouts. It will take some time for Plax to bounce back, and he can try to make that comeback elsewhere, somewhere he wants to be.

?

I don’t know where your numbers are from. According to nfl.com, Brown caught 16 balls in the regular season (in 9 games played) and added 5 more in the playoffs. Plus Football Outsiders says he caught 84% of the balls thrown his way. I think that’s pretty good for a rookie playing behind a lot of talent. Sure, maybe the Swann-Stallworth comparisons are a little early (but compare the rookie numbers), but I think Brown has more potential than Plex does now.

by buddytoledo on Jun 6, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I flubbed the numbers.

I saw confused the passes caught column with the games played at Pro-Football Reference, good catch, my mistake. He’s got potential, I would agree, but I wouldn’t say he’s a lock for a roster spot either.
