Ward DUI

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6751942

Not Good. This is a bit shocking, Ward has always been the responsible one. There aren't much details right now but I wouldn't imagine theres much more to it then that.

Think the Steelers will suspend him a game? think GODell will bring down the hammer cause he wears black and gold? It is his first offense against NFl policy as far as I know.

I believe I read somewhere that players will be held accountable for any “incidents” that happened during the lockout. However Ward has been in the league for 15+ years without any issues, so he might get away without repercussion. Although in my bias opinion, I wouldn’t mind if he missed Week 1 (and I’m sure Reed wouldn’t mind it either).

big ben was punished for providing alcohol to minors, which is a crime the last time i checked

although i’m not 100% certain, i’m pretty sure the reason why roethlisberger wasn’t actually charged with that crime is because if he was charged they would have to charge the minors for underage consumption. it obv wouldn’t be okay for ppl who want to report a rape (whether it ends up going to court or not) to be deterred from reporting it because they’re afraid of getting in trouble for being illegally high/drunk/etc when it occurred.

Minors IN A BAR.

really. Patrons are not expected or liable for confirming the age of folks they buy drinks for. That’s the bouncer’s job.

by SlingStone on Jul 9, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

but in GA minors are allowed in bars

and it’s not important or relevant to the hines problem. the only thing ben and hines have in common is that both incidents happened in GA. what’s up with that?

apparently he only blew a .046? and usually it takes .08 to be impaired i guess unless you are swerving? he may get off from this b/c at 3:40 am you are probably swerving b/c you are tired. maybe they will let him plead to driving tired or something like that.

That and with the type of lawyer Hines can afford, I’d be surprised if he gets convicted.

exactly, i am sure it is posted in the bar

don’t give drinks to anyone not wearing a wristband. but you know this rule gets violated all the time, order a coke and switch with someone drinking rum & coke. no one can keep track of that mess.

the NFL already provides this service to all it's players for free

i wonder if they suspended this service b/c of the lockout? but during normal times all NFL players have the option of calling a league paid for car service. i guess players may not want to use it b/c then the league has that info on file.

it came up when Braylon Edwards got a DUI in NYC, why didn’t he just call the league’s car service? in NY they will be there in like 5 minutes.

by kk99 on Jul 9, 2011 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

this "service" is a lot like exercise rooms in the big law offices.

You get in more trouble for using them than for not. At least that’s the perception of a lot of players. Hines is wealthy, I wish he had just had someone else drive.

brought to you by Carl Jr's.

by SteelersVT on Jul 11, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

that's true

especially if you use them all the time, players don’t want to be flagged for that. although the league will tell them that they won’t hold it against them. players won’t trust them.

Lets get the facts

First off , I dont condone drinking and driving from anyone , sports celebrity or private citizen . Its dumb and dangerous and puts peoples lives at risk . However , before we start building the cross to nail Hines Ward body to , lets remember Hines has been a model player his entire career in Pittsburgh . Hes never been a problem player or given the team even an ounce of trouble . Bottom line , he deserves the benefit of the doubt . If the allegations prove to be true , then he deserves the same penalty any other citizen in this country would get for first offense DUI . If the allegations against him are not true , then he needs to learn from this and move on with life . Bottom line , were all human and we all mistakes .

under .08 is fine with me

I think people don’t speak up against this because they will get demonized. My sorrow to any one that has lost due to drunk driving. I consider eating high calorie fast food while driving more dangerous then having a beer in your system while you drive. Those calories can make you sleepy and shorten your response time, especially someone is driving and eating. I have almost got into more accidents driving with hot coffee then I have having a single drink in my system. If you think .046 should be a crime then it should be a crime to be doing anything (drinking any beverage, eating, texting, talking on cellphone, makeup, stopping kids from fighting, having a conversation) while driving.

by Unleashed on Jul 11, 2011 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

its well established that texting and driving is significantly more dangerous than drinking and driving

but you are absolutely correct on the demonizing of anyone that points out that MADD has destroyed more lives than it has saved. I’m not even going to bother with the standard disclaimers people always use when talking about these things- such a loaded subject, no pun intended.

I was ready to own this one as a huge Ward fan

The facts are hazy right now but if I find out that he was arrested after blowing less than a .08, which is within the cops’ discretion, I’m going to have a fit. .08 is already too low for a threshold of intoxication and when cops arrest you when you blow lower than that it is the biggest pile of bullshit on the planet.

0.08

I think 0.08 is a fair threshold but I don’t understand the charge on someone who is 0.046. That is barely over a single drink. Is there a zero tolerance policy there? ie. no alcohol at all?

he's gonna get off

unless he was on tape and being beligerent or disrespectful to the cop. for a guy his size .046 is only one maybe 2 drinks.

even in AZ (the hardest state on DUIs) they sometimes drop cases like this even with a .08. i bet they offer him the option of pleading to careless driving and call it a day.

according to PG

He refused to use the Brethalyzer after failing field sobriety.

Generally if you refuse this, you get the DUI. However if you have $$ and lawyers by your side, then you can probably fight this pretty well.

Am I missing something? Where did the 0.046% come from ?

by Steely McSmash on Jul 11, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

.08 is now the standard in most states

but if you are swerving around or have a moving violation then they can pin a DUI on you even if you are at .046. any lawyer out there should be able to get it reduced to careless or tired driving because it was at 4 am. unless his BAL shot up at the police station or there is some damning video evidence, i think it will be pleaded down to just a moving violation, like 3 points and $300 fine. something like that is what i am thinking.

This sucks because after we beat you in week 1, everyone here will say it didn’t count because Ward didn’t play. He has a chance of getting suspended.

Flacco's first 3 years vs. Brady's, Manning's and Brees' first 3 years

Flacco threw for just 21 fewer passing yards than Brady and tossed four fewer interceptions. Flacco threw for 1,655 more yards than Brees, two more touchdowns and four fewer picks. Manning, who averaged 88 more passes per season, threw for way more yards and touchdowns than Flacco, but also tossed 24 more interceptions.

Just to keep things up-to-date
Ward, 35, was given a portable breath test and recorded a blood-alcohol content of .128 percent, the report states. The legal limit at which a person is declared too impaired to drive in Georgia is .08.

Ward refused to take further alcohol breath tests and was booked into the Dekalb County Jail at 3:41 a.m. Saturday

Read more: New details in Hines Ward DUI police report – Pittsburgh Tribune-Review http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/s_746263.html#ixzz1RqEhF3Ht

I hadn’t seen that .046 reported anywhere, so it appears that that was just false speculation. Also, it appears that the cops were just doing their job after following Ward’s car for awhile.

It’s starting to sound like he did drive drunk, which is a real shame.

yea, .046 was total bs

when you think about it no cop is going to arrest a celebrity for that low a breathalyzer, there would immediately be a huge outrage. he would either be accused of being a racist or it was a setup and he was paid to take hines down.

it’s too bad .046 would be very easy to get out of.

by kk99 on Jul 12, 2011 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

one other thing that sucks

if you refuse to blow at the police station on the real accurate machine then you lose your license both in PA and all 50 states for like one year. not sure but it makes sense.

by kk99 on Jul 12, 2011 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i looked it up

a refusal to take a breathalyzer at the police station can be used against you in a court of law and both in PA and GA it results in a one year loss of license.

i guess hines is going to have to have a buddy drive him around for the next year.

by kk99 on Jul 12, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

not all states it's a one year loss

in AZ it used to be one year, now you have to pay for a breathalyzer in your car.

but with a one year suspension in PA or GA you can’t get a TX license after 6 mos. the one year suspension will be honored by all other 50 states, that is how i understand it.

it is stupid and dangerous, and very unfortunate for Heinz personally. I’m as big of a Heinz Ward fan as anyone on earth, but if he was driving drunk he deserves the punishment he gets. If we’re all honest with ourselves though, who hasn’t done something stupid and dangerous in their life? I know I have many times and have been lucky enough not to get in trouble for it. We all make mistakes and deserve what we get as a result of our bad decisions, but the only positive that may come from it is to learn from it, and humbly try to change our decision making process.
