Ben Roethlisberger has agreed to rework his contract to help get the Steelers under the salary cap for this year. The Steelers have anywhere from 4-7 million to shed, so I doubt Ben can make up that whole number, but this is a really great thing to do. I have doubts that Ben would have done this even three years ago. He still has a lot to do to win back support from many Steeler fans, but he has done all the right things since the last accusation in Georgia over a year ago.
The Steelers still will need to make cuts, but I am looking for veterans to take Big Ben's lead and offer to help the team get under the cap. Aaron Smith, Troy Polamalu, and Hines Ward are the most likely vets to move next to help the Steelers get under the cap.
This was some great leadership from our starting QB, and I am proud of him. The numbers have not been released, and this was just reported by Ed Bouchette, but this is very good news. I wouldn't be surprised to see this move help get Max Starks in camp. Ben makes a public statement yesterday in support of Starks, then cuts his salary, I think this is a precursor for things to come.
Go Steelers! Thank you Ben!
