Quick Hitters from Our first Preseason game
Well, that was rough. I don't care so much that we lost but more so how bad we looked doing it. Not many players really shined yet there were a lot of bads. This post will get straight to the key points from the game.
- Antonio Brown was awesome. He had four catches for 64 yards and would have had one more catch. The kid is trying to show that he can be our #3 WR and he will be in a battle for that spot with Cotchery and Sanders.
- Isaac Redman was awesome as usual. He had 5 carries for 42 yards and 1 TD. He made some good blocks and was phenomenal. We have a very deep group of RBs this year.
- Ryan Mundy was making a lot of tackles before he got injured (minor injury) and finished with 7 solo tackles and 1 assisted tackle. He needs to improve his coverage a little bit though
- Cameron Heyward looked pretty good. He did not do much on the stat sheet but he was pretty disruptive and looked comfortable.
- Daniel Sepulveda was booming punts. He had four punts averaging 51 yards per punt and he placed 3 inside the 20. Lets hope he stays healthy.
- Anthony Gray: He registered 2 tackles but more importantly, he looked very good holding the middle and forcing things to the outside.
That is really all I can say for the good, now onto the bad.
- William Gay has already begun the 10 yard cushion, get beat, give up lots of catches routine. He was bad.
- Limas Sweed did not play. I was hoping we would get to see him and he did dress but he was never put in. Hopefully we get to see him next week.
- Injuries: Timmons, Mundy, and Ike all suffered minor injuries tonight. Lets hope all our injuries this year are minor.
- Dennis Dixon: He is so bad. He was really, really awful tonight. His passes were constantly short and inaccurate and he had like 3 or 4 passes that were almost picked. (1 for 10 for 29 yards and a sub 40 QB rating)
- Jason Worilds: Worilds got the start tonight and he looked terrible. Hightower got most of his yards running right at Worilds and if he wants to contribute this year, he needs to be better against the run.
- ZERO SACKS: None of our players were able to register a sack. I hope I never have to type that again.
- Special Teams coverage: We gave up 2 Punt Returns for 19 yards each and also a 58 yard kick return. Lets hope we fix that soon.
- Arnaz Battle: He had a few catches but he also had a few drops. He will probably be cut.
- Jonathan Dwyer: Dwyer posted just five carries for seven yards but its not as bad as it looked. A couple times there was no blocking but it still was not a good night for him.

Wrote a similar thing about Worilds in the driveby report. Was absolute crap against the run. Makes me feel even better that we kept Woodley. If he ever wants to be a Steelers Linebacker, he needs to step up his game, if not, are we looking at Alonzo Jackson 2.0?

very small plus
Hopefully having a larger sample size of plays to look at, the coaches and Worilds will be able to analyze what went wrong last night and learn from it. If it is just an issue of not being strong enough then there is little that can be done this year (that is an off-season thing I would imagine). If it is just technique and decision making then there is some of him developing this season. I would have to think he needs more reps in game situations at this point in time.

Didn't see the game last night, but
I remember seeing him last year. He did play his ass off, and had some crucial plays against the ravens.
I think tomilin is riding him because they have high expectations, not because he’s slacking, yes?
Yes on riding Worilds
There have been some articles that while he has a lot of talent, he lacks the “killer instinct.” Coach Butler is supposedly pushing him hard as well, trying to get him to amp it up. I think the expectations are that in year 2, he should see a lot more time on the field, if for nothing else than to give Mr Harrison and Mr Woodley a few more breathers and keep them fresh for the back end of the season. Of course when he saw action at the end of last year, he played fairly well and got a pair of sacks if I’m not mistaken.
I would agree. He needs to live up to that 2nd round billing, especially considering we drafted him without much need for an OLB
He is a really good situational pass rusher, just needs to really develop the rest of the game so that he can be a complete player. Hes going slower than I expected, but the good thing is he has time

3 years to really get our D
That’s how most of our players work. Second year is moderate playing time. Hopefully third year they can play every game for a good percentage of snaps or even start.
Hardly anybody makes a real huge impact in year two. Only Polamalu and Woodley have done that so far. Snack got thrown in pretty early too.
BTW, nfl.com has anytime access (including live coverage) of all the preseason games for only $19 bucks
obviously don’t have access to pre-season on tv way out here in boise, so a good investment. watched the game realtime, then one time after to analyze (and that’s about all i could take…)

Who is going to play CB?
Ike broken thumb, Crez quad injury and Keenan Lewis calf… didn’t get the game won’t see it till tomorrow but who played CB. Willy G, Curtis Brown and Niles Brinkley? 2 rookies and a crappy CB.
Im sure Ike can play with a broken thumb
You can tell the players have missed the offseason though, many found out they werent game fit, meaning they werent taking punishment/contact as comfortably as they would in a normal year
Its ok, only minor injuries.

I meant who played CB with all those injuries? Ike doesn’t use his hands anyways.
Yes, but not to catch

I put together a post disagreeing with you on Dwyer and Worilds
Worilds didn’t show much, but he had flashes and I think he will be fine.
Dwyer had the worst O-Line combination we put out there, and they were dominated by the Skins. He showed good speed and an awareness that his primary lanes were closing up. He stopped on a dime a few times and tried to cut back, but the whole line was broken up. He didn’t look great, but I was impressed considering.
by Michael Uhlhorn on Aug 13, 2011 2:10 AM EDT reply actions
Agree with you on Dwyer.
Although I feel that he was only ok on runs, he was running behind the #2 and #3 line. Regardless, he still needs to be more decisive hitting the holes.
I was more happy with his pass protection than anything. This was better than last year.
They even used him in the slot one play as Dixon tried to hit him with a quick slant.
I watched it on stream last night though…… NFL Network will play the game today at 4PM, so I’ll re-watch.
Dwyer development
I thought he needed work in pass protection and receiving. If he has made progress in those areas then there is hope.

The reports about his weight are discouraging, but I’d say wait it out a little for Dwyer. An A Back generally doesn’t go right to RB extremely easily imo

RB was blocking. He had no chance to catch it
He was inside the tackle box, the ball didn’t cross the line of scrimmage, and he was being taken down as he threw.
If that’s not intentional grounding just because the RB was in the backfield…..

How many NFL head coaches
have the luxury of not worrying about their starting 22? Can put their 2s, 3s and rookies out there for three quarters, let them make their mistakes and learn, grade and analyze them under fire, and know where to direct the following week’s practices?
This is exactly the kind of preseason game I want to see – starters go out and kick ass for a series, then the instruction begins. It’s especially valuable in a short preseason to have the ability to do just that. Many have mentioned the great value of a veteran team in a lockout period; tonight we saw precisely what that means.
Shanahan, you have BIG troubles ahead.
My heros have always been Steelers...
I totally agree -
except that it would have been comforting to see the starters kick just a little bit more ass. On the other hand, I’m perfectly happy to keep the rest of the league guessing about our schemes, our players, and even our preparation…

Keenan Lewis and Dwyer
I thought Lewis looked better than last year. He still has work to do on coverage, but his technique was better, and he tackled well this year. Dwyer on the other hand seemed to take a step back. The blocking wasn’t good, but he didn’t run with the power that he flashed last year.
Lewis
managed to keep his temper, for one thing, which was a big upgrade. He wasn’t brilliant, but he looked a lot better than last year to me as well.

Yeah watching it then..
Got it recording also so I ca re watch it but sounds like I won’t want to after this one.
J. Scott and T. Hills looked good; Marcus Gilbert was slow out of his stance sometimes ...
I focused a lot on T. Hills against Orapko at LT and he did a good job. He also played well when he went to RG. J. Scott and Colon looked excellent during the little time they were in the game. Chris Scott had some good and bad moments. He look fine in the run game, but he did look confuse on a few of the twists, one ending up with Byron Leftwich getting sacked.
Marcus Gilbert looked like this was his first game. But you can tell he is a pretty strong dude because once he got his hands on someone, they didn’t go anywhere. I actually thought the play from LT’s last night overall was a positive.
I am still not impressed with our CB coverage. The only CB that played press last night was Crezdon Butler and then he did something to his quad. Donovan Warren and Keenan Lewis gave up so much cushion that it was just basically pitch and catch for the Skins all night. Here’s hoping that C. Brown, C. Allen and BMac can jump in and do better than what we saw last night. William Gay is still pretty bad.
On the flip side, Antonio Brown is pretty damn good. He and Wallace can take it to the house at anytime. With the signing of Cotchery and the way that A. Battle played last night, I don’t see him making this team. If you are not going to get anything more from for your 6th WR spot, you might as well give that job to Grisham or A. Robinson.
The Eagles will be a good test for our OL and secondary next week. It sucks to hear about Ike’s injury, but you only need him for the 1st game of the regular season. He can play with a light cast because he isn’t catching the ball anyways. Sooner or later, the Steelers have to get some corners with speed who can make plays on the ball.

Agreed on Battle -
after he dropped about three passes in a row I wrote down “Battle is gone…” Brown was awesome. I’d love to see Grisham get a bit more time next week.

Donovan Warren
Perhaps this is not the highest praise, but when Warren’s receiver caught the ball, it seemed that Warren was always close enough to his man, to show up on the television screen. Unfortunately, this was one of the most impressive things that I noticed from our secondary. The other being Ryan Mundy.
Some quick research uncovered that our # 30, Donovan Warren, was expected to be a second to fourth round choice in the 2010 draft. It was debated whether he’d be a CB or safety in the NFL. His name was never called on draft day, and he would up signing with the Jets as an undrafted free agent. A concussion kept him out of most of training camp, and after a brief stay on the Jets practice squad, he was released.
We signed him on January 7 2011. We had no CBs on the injury report the week prior, but Troy was listed as questionable.
Will Carnell Lake help Warren transition to safety?
I plan to keep an eye on this, and any info on Warren would be appreciated.
"They timed it perfectly, they just went too soon." - Darrell Waltrip commenting on an illegal restart.
Rookie DE's Corbin Bryant and C. Heyward looked good out there ...
NT Anthony Gray flashed some, but he still got moved off the line a little too much for a Steelers NT. I think that is more of a technique thing than it is a lack of physical skills. A year on the practice squad would do him good. However. C. Bryant, Tunch Ilkin’s ‘camp phenom’ played like he has an outside chance of being the 7th DL if they keep 7. He was quick, disruptive, used his hands well and was in the backfield a lot.
Can’t wait to see Timmons and Sly at ILB together running that fire X blitz. Jason Worilds looked bad. That is why Tomlin left him in the game for so long.

Glad to hear that.
While I’m thrilled with Ziggy, and it sounds like Heyward is going to be a player, I was hoping for a trifecta by grabbing a younger backup for Casey. Not that I don’t like Hoke, but he’s as old as Hampton and we’ll need to address that sooner rather than later. Anthony Gray was a good pick-up to test drive and kick the tires on, but I would like to get a group of young D-linemen to carry on the good work of Keisel, Hampton and A. Smith. Probably can’t have enough of them, and we’ve been charmed and spoiled by how long our line has been able to play together and effectively. I liked Nick Eason as a back-up, and would be thrilled if we could get better and younger upgrades.
I get that McClendon is/was a project, and to the same extent Sunny Harris is also, but if Bryant is better, and could possibly make the 53, that’s even better.
So I see where Harris got waived today.
Guess that puts an exclamation point on the reply to my question…..
That being said, the 1st team was barely in there and it was the pre season
Shouldn’t read too much into it imo. Everyone has a bad game or two, I’m not remotely worried about Worilds.

Dixon
I was a little disgusted with his play. But, on closer observation, I noticed that he was getting very weak snaps from the Maceli, the center. This can throw off your timing. Also he had poor blocking from the line and constantly had to instruct them. A missed block from the fullback Clay caused him to be sacked. Hope that he will be in the game a lot earlier against Philly. Also thought that Lefty played lackadaisical. He did show a very strong arm and reason why he is the #2 QB. Am kind of hoping that they cut Charlie and put him on Staff. Hope we use Ben on just 1 series against Philly and ditto with Troy, Hines and Mendy. Would also like to see Anthony Gray get in the game a lot earlier. McRae showed some promise as a receiver and a willingness to mix it up on ST’s. All in all I wasn’t disappointed. Because to me, preseason games are for the veterans to get in one series and then let the rookies and second year non starters to get some game experience. I will agree with Coach Tomlin, that the guys need to play with more purpose. Time is running out for some of them.
Good point -
one of the snaps dribbled to the ground after only lofting a couple of inches, and Dixon had to scramble to get the ball at all. To be really fair they should give him a go with the second team next week and see how he does.

That wouldn't be a bad idea.
But the regulars need to play a few downs – just to get the feel of game conditions. Ben should not be put in a position where he stands a chance of being sacked.

A lot of people are noticing and *pulling for* Anthony Gray.
I have been following him since he was omitted in the draft. We need someone young to be the replacement for Casey. Hope Gray will get in much earlier against Philly and get as lot of minutes. I want to see all of our rookies get a chance to see if they have something to contribute to us being the best team in the NFL.
Preseason Games
I am not overly concerned whether we win or lose the preseason games (of course I want us to win as many as possible). But I think it is more important that we get our backups as much opportunity as possible to see whether they have what it takes to make our 53 man roster. Our secondary players especially need to get more game time. If they get beat, so be it. But we need to see what they have to offer. Philly will be a good test for them. This is our Achilles heel, so we need to find a solution for it before the season starts. Throw them into the fire.
Whew

Just saw the replay of the game from NFLN....
WHY DID WE RE-SIGN WILLIAM GAY???!?!?
"Never said I'm first to put the 'Burgh up on the map, I'm more like Mike Tomlin here to bring da 'Burgh back... Khalifa man."
I don't care that Willie Gay knows the D, he is a liability in pass coverage ...
Period. Donovan Warren can be kept on the practice squad as a safety with some CB skills (just not CB speed). Everyone says that it is the scheme that requires our DB’s to play 8 to 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, but I also think the confidence of the CB plays into this as well. Ike and McFadden don’t give up the cushion that Warren and Lewis were giving up the other night and that’s because they both are comfortable with the D and know their assignments.
I like the way Butler played some press on his man but that is because he knows that he has the speed to turn and run with the WR. I don’t think K. Lewis has that confidence. As disappointed as I was with the secondary, the defensive line youngsters were an encouragement as well as some of the offensive line. Corbin Bryant and Heyward were very active.
Lastly, I think is the year that I might consider keeping 8 LBs and keeping K Swayze as my kickoff specialist. I think him putting it ten yards in the endzone every kickoff would have more impact than a 9th LB on this team that you could probably stash on the practice squad. I just don’t think that Suisham has the leg to consistently put it deep into the endzone and our kickoff and punt coverage did not look good. Maybe ILB Mario Harvey can help to change that, but until he does, I’d serious consider keeping the kickoff specialist. Thoughts?

I mean for a 340-360lbs man. Usually the first reports in camp is he is out of condition but that screen play he looked fast and was on Grossman fast, might be a career year for him.
Strange how the guy who we always worry is out of shape turns out to be in better shape than most of the team.

I think you are stretching it i to make a statement like that. I LOVE my Steelers and hope that Casey has a GREAT year. But he will have to play like that for 4 quarters to convince me that he is in shape. I observe Casey a lot during games and have seen him breathing heavy after a few plays. If you are in shape, you will not be breathing heavy in the first quarter – as I have observed him doing at times. He’s a big man (actually a HUGE man), so I expect him to get tired faster than , say someone 200 lbs. But there is no reason for him to be lugging around all of that waistline. I am pulling for Anthony Gray to push him for some playing time. If he does it should make Casey play even harder. I am all for the reserves and rookies to make the starters work for their minutes. I am glad that Gray has someone like Casey to mentor him. Anything that makes us a better team – I am strongly in favor of. I remember Joey Porter’s first year when he had a skirmish with the Bus in Training Camp. It was all about playing hard tough football. That is what makes us the tough ass team that we are. I am thankful for avid fans like yourself. I am defintely one, so I will give constructive criticism of our team and hope that it will be accepted as just that. Hoping to be in 7th Heaven at the end of this year. I think that it is the retirement present that Hines is waiting for. So, lets give it to him just like we did for the Bus.
I wouldn't say better shape than most of the team...
He looked quicker, and was in better shape than usual but he was huffing oxygen a lot. I just happy he playing in the first preseason game instead of being on the sideline for being over weight. He looked like himself and I am happy about that.
That sounds more like reality
He’s lugging too much excess around the middle. He definitely needs to work on that.
David Johnson
His blocking looked terrible all game and he was constantly in the way or missing the key rusher. On Lord Redman’s TD, the aforementioned Redman had to basically spin out of DJ’s way.
