Another look at the 53 man roster
I was recently asked about whether or not the Steelers will keep 7 CB's. This lead me to thinking about whether or not it is possible because I think that is what we need to do. Our 7 CB's are Ike, BMAC, Gay, Lewis, Brown, Butler, and Allen. I don't think we can really cut any of our young corners yet because they have a lot of potential. But anyways, here would be my guess at 53 men.
QB: Ben Roethlisberger (1), Byron Leftwich (2), Dennis Dixon (3)RB: Rashard Mendenhall (4), Isaac Redman (5), Mewelde Moore (6), Jonathan Dwyer (7)
WR: Mike Wallace (8), Hines Ward (9), Antonio Brown (10), Emmanuel Sanders (11), Jerricho Cotchery (12), Arnaz Battle (13)
TE: Heath Miller (14), Weslye Saunders (15), David Johnson (16)
RT: Willie Colon (17), Marcus Gilbert (18)
RG: Tony Hills (19), Ramon Foster (20)
C: Maurkice Pouncey (21), Doug Legursky (22)
LG: Chris Kemoeautu (23), Keith Williams
LT: Jonathan Scott (25), Marcus Gilbert
LE: Brett Keisel (26), Cameron Heyward (27)
NT: Casey Hampton (28), Chris Hoke (29)
RE: Aaron Smith (30), Ziggy Hood (31)
LOLB: James Harrison (32), Jason Worilds (33)
LILB: Lawrence Timmons (34), Larry Foote (35)
RILB: James Farrior (36), Stevenson Sylvester (37)
ROLB: LaMaar Woodley (38), Chris Carter (39)
CB: Ike Taylor (40), Bryant McFadden (41), William Gay (42), Curtis Brown (43), Cortez Allen (44), Keenan Lewis (45), Credzon Butler (46)
FS: Ryan Clark (47), Will Allen (48)
SS: Troy Polamalu (49), Ryan Mundy (50)
K: Shaun Suisham (51)
P: Daniel Sepulveda (52)
LS: Greg Warren (53)
As you can see, I made it work with 7 CBs. However, it was very tough to leave John Gilmore, Anthony Gray, and Mario Harvey off the team but I think we will be able to slip Gray and Harvey to the PS without them being claimed. It was also tough to leave Batch off the team but I think we will try and sign him as a coach of some sort. The biggest ? for me right now is the battle between Johnson, Gilmore, and Saunders for 2 TE spots and the battle for the nickel corner spot between Gay, Lewis, Brown, Allen, and Butler. Damon Cromartie Smith and Donavan Warren are also making strong pushes to try and make the team. This is far from set in stone but I will update this as I think things change.

As it is right now
I just don’t see how they can give a spot to Cortez over Warren.

potential as a starter
Warren is at best a nickel. Cortez has potential to be a lock down #1 corner and you don’t just give up on that

Its why we kept Lewis over Burnett. Burnett had more game time, but in the end, he only projected to be a nickel corner whereas Lewis was the prototypical outside corner
I think Seton is right

Right which is why
Mike Tomlin is going to trip him in the parking lot and put him on IR for the year. That way they save the roster spot. Not a bad plan for Keith Williams either…

I was just sensing another ‘all soccer players suck and are soft’ generalization. Ask Josh, if you are not from Southern Europe or South America, that couldn’t be further from the truth :)
Nah, I dont think they are all soft
I like to give the sport a hard time, but I played for a decade as a kid, and I had friends who played in college and Junior National teams and whatnot.
I actually think women’s soccer is one of the most fun sports to watch. They have such a great ability with the ball. I think Steeler fans should typically like soccer, lots of defense, good sound play, low scoring. haha.
BTW I played Water Polo and anyone who likes football should watch/play some of that. The Olympic players are basically what James Harrison would be if he was an elite swimmer who played a game that allowed him to drown people.

I wish it was bigger in the States. I’m from California originally, and that is basically the only state where it is a big deal. The only other college who is any good at it outside the state is the Naval Academy, and most of those guys are future Navy Seals, so I have faith they are tough enough for the sport. haha.

Cortez Allen has spent the entire preseason nursing injuries. Warren has been out there fighting for a roster spot. If Allen sits out the next two games with injuries, I do not see how he can make the roster.

I don't think there is a chance they cut Allen
In years past I would 100% agree, but with Thad Gibson being stolen last year, they have to keep Cortez for the potential. I will however say if they give Warren some looks against better competition than the #3’s they could be weighing their options for dropping Allen to see if he slides through to the practice squad.

Why???
C. Scott is playing ahead of him in all pre-season games…ahead on depth chart in practices. Why do you think that Tomlin and the FO will keep Williams over C. Scott?
"He has the best ability, which is availability." - Mike Tomlin
"You can't make the club from the tub." - Mike Tomlin

Williams is a rookie who is about as good as Scott
without knowing the system or having more than just a few weeks of NFL coaching.
C. Scott is someone who should have shown progress by now, and at least in my opinion hasn’t. That makes Williams more valuable since he can already play a comparable game to Scott, and could improve far beyond Scott’s ceiling.
by Michael Uhlhorn on Aug 19, 2011 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions
To be fair
This basically C. Scott’s rookie season. He was on IR all last year. Although, that means he should know the playbook backwards, he’s still delayed a full year in the physical sense.

I might have missed it, but can you elaborate Andy? I don’t remember seeing anything about him slowing down or being terribly injured. If anything I heard he was one of our best lineman so far in camp.
by Michael Uhlhorn on Aug 19, 2011 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I doubt Gray makes the PS
there are too many teams like Denver who are completely hosed on the D-line. Those teams will take him the day he’s cut.
Roster
Barring injury, I don’t see any chance the Steelers cut Cortez Allen. Allen is a brand new 4th round draft choice with the physical attributes to be a starting CB in this league. Warren does not have those attributes.
In addition, Allen (like Warren) appears to have good intangibles. This is 2 preseason games after an abbreviated off-season. It is way too early to even consider giving up on Allen.
I agree with most of your choices but I don’t see 7 CB’s. I know its cliche, but I don’t think William Gay would be a big loss, so long as one player between Brown, Allen, Lewis or Butler can provide basic competence as a CB. I think Brown’s development (if it continues) especially hurts Gay, since Brown has the slot short-area quickness to be a competent 3rd CB right now and render Gay superfluous. I like Gay as a person more than as a player.
Also, I think that this may be the year that Steve McClendon pushes out Chris Hoke. He’s been in the system long enough now. Finally, I want Mortty Ivy to make this team, though it does seem an uphill battle.
I am going to strongly consider dropping Gay from this 53 man roster and re-adding Chris Scott on the OL or Anthony Gray/Steve McClendon
But right now I am not comfortable to just drop Gay

But Warren looked better than Allen has all camp. That’s because Cortez has spent the entire preseason with various injuries. Not only has he sat out of both games, but he has sat out the majority of practices. If he spends the rest of camp with injuries I do not think he is assured a roster spot. Hell, Thad Gibson who did really well in preseason (2010 4th round pick) ended up getting cut. 4th round picks are not untouchable.

put in 10-yards into the endzone. I think that alone could have more impact on a team than a 6th WR or a 7th CB each game that won’t play. With Suisham, the Steelers are going to have a lot of runbacks. Thoughts?

I do not think Carter would make it on the PS and I do not think they have any plans to cut him. They really like his raw talent. Anyway, a UDFA has a lot better chance of sliding by on the PS. Gray is still really raw and has a ways to go in gap integrity/run stuffing.
Warren might make it on the PS. But I just think he should make it over players who haven’t practiced/played.

Too many Interior O-linemen...
There is no reason we need a back up at each position of guard and center and not have one at both tackles. I think we keep Legursky and Scott because they can play multiple positions. Foster hasn’t looked good and Williams hasn’t had the time to learn the offense I think we PS him. I think it is down to Butler, Warren and Allen for the final CB spots.(Warren and Butler have the atvatage and with little tape time the Steelers may try to PS Allen) I also am certain Dixon won’t be on the roster they were giving him tape time for a possible trade or claim off waiver wire. We also don’t need to have 3 QBs might not go with 3 if Ben gets hurt we always know where to find good Ol’ Chuck as a back up. I also think we need one more D-linemen probably McClendon.
last CB spot
I still think that 2 out of the three you listed could make it and Gay could be the odd man out. He was outplayed badly last night by both Lewis and Warren.
I Like Your List.
But I think that , sadly we may lose a couple of good prospect when the final cut is made. We have got to get a backup for Casey. I want him to be able to go full throttle when he is in there. If he is tired put his backup in. McClendon has an upper hand on Anthony Gray now, because he has gotten more minutes. As much as I would like us to keep Hoke, I would keep the 2 youngsters (Gray and McClendon). Hoke will get picked up by another team because he is still a capable NG – but we need to get younger with our backups. Hope we make Dixon the 3rd QB and give Charlie a Management /Coaching position. If we can stay healthy, this is a Superbowl team.
McLendon
is about 50 big macs from being ready to play nose. He might slide to DE and Ziggy could play Nose though. Plenty of young studs at DE from the looks of things.
by Steely McSmash on Aug 19, 2011 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions
You could be correct there
But Mclendon did look good at the NG in the first 2 games. I am hoping more that Gray can be our solution at NG and Ziggy can stay where he is. I will admit that McClendon would probably be more suited as a DE in our defensive scheme. Wish they would give Gray more minutes so they can determine his worth. I am sure that they already have a good idea.
this season I think will be McClendon's last
I believe his practice squad eligibility is all used up, however, I’d expect some 3-4 team to be able to make good use of him, but I’ve watched as decent 3-4 linemen from out system have been ignored by other teams in the past so who knows. I hope he lands somewhere.
by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 19, 2011 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Gray
I am a big Gray booster and have been observing him – the limited time he has gotten to play. I think that his biggest fault is that he needs to learn to use his hands better and don’t get hung up with the Center. I am a big admirer of another rookie, Drake Nevis of the Colts. He fights his blockers off of him with good hand movement and continues his pursuit if the play goes wide. If Gray learns to do this better, he will be a force to be reckoned with. I am hoping that we at least keep him on the PS. He has the perfect size for NG and is strong as an ox.
SB now
I keep thinking about all these talented hard working kids and I want them all on the roster but this team is built to win SBs right now. The kids are for the future. The coaching staff and FO will have a hard time finding the right balance so we can get those SBs right now and still not have to spend 5 years rebuilding after.

because Warren/Lewis do the nickel corner job as good or better than Gay is capable of doing it and that way we would not have to try and sneak Cortez to the PS, which will never happen. I don’t think cutting Allen is sensible considering he has the potential to be a lockdown #1 corner.

Would not be shocked if they try to showcase Dixon these next 2 weeks to try and generate some trade buzz around him. Send him away to someone needing a QB (Dolphins) for a 5th round choice. He will walk at the end of the season, so get what you can for him. I am more than comfortbale with having Ben, Byron and Charlie as our QBs this year and try to find some young kid to groom next.

Roster
I see Battle, Gay and Foote getting cut, Dixon probably getting traded maybe to Seattle (J Jackson is worthless), which will open the spots for Warren, Batch (1 more year before becoming a QB coach) and Smith. Gray and Harvey will be on the PS. If Cortez keeps being hurt, dont be surprised is he is placed in the IR, which will open the spot for Foote.
How about Tony Hills, all the paper abuse he has taken his first three years, I think he has cemented the RG position, he can pull, pretty good in the pass and will be joining Pouncey down the field in running plays. Which will mean more yards for both M and R-train

William Gay is very much under threat
Don’t read anything into the Steelers re-signing him at all. They’ve done that sort of thing for years. Bring back marginal players on one year deals that cost them nothing to cut in training camp. It’s covering their asses in case a rookie or second year player can’t take their spot as hoped. So the Steelers need someone to be their nickel DB. If that’s Donovan Warren then Gay will likely be cut, as I expect Mewelde Moore would have been if Baron Batch had earned a roster spot. I doubt very much they would cut Cortez Allen and hope he lasts on the Practice Squad, if Warren or one of the other young CBs we have is unable to beat out Gay for the nickel DB slot then expect Gay to be kept and I would think it would be Warren they’d opt to stash on the practice squad, activating him in the case of a Defensive back injury.
Agreed!
I think Gay is in trouble. All things being equal, they would keep the pieces with upside. While Cortez Allen hasn’t been able to show much this camp due to injury, William Gay has been outplayed by Lewis and Warren, allowing us to stash Cortez and move on from Gay. Let’s hope we see some things out of Cortez these next two weeks to make this all academic!!!
news flash in the near future
Cortez Allen injures (insert arbitrary injury here) and is placed on IR.
I’m not saying they’ll have him fake an injury…
fingers crossed yes.
Although take a look over at Steeler Depot they have soem nice stats up there analysing defensive backs (and the OL as well, good reads). Gay, statistically speaking had a better game than Donovan Warren did. One thing I’ve always noted about Gay is that he’s a really good tackler. Yes he gives up receptions but he rarely gives away yards after the catch and he will often tackle the guy immediately as he catches the ball. Warren’s game against the Eagles was very similar, except he did give up some YAC… and a TD. Gay only gave up 3.3 yards per attempt. We’d rave about the Defensive Line only giving up that to a running back. So I think all of the guys in contention with Gay still have work to do.

A fine poast and my 2 cents
First off, I see Chris Scott holding the backup position over Keith Williams. From what I’ve seen and heard so far, either way its a tough cut.
I would NOT be surprised to see Arnaz Battle dropped if and only if Warren can provide ST support. Warren needs to work his way up through the ranks, but could be a Nick Shields (green bay undrafted nickle corner) that could surprise us if given the shot. And do we really need Arnaz on the WR corps? I doubt it, our WRs are as deep as ever. Browns emerging, Sanders is solid, Cochery is a baller, and Ward and Wallace are studs.
Allen is by far the best specimen on the CB chart and you can’t just cut a 4th round pick in his first camp unless he’s gone full retard.
Another possible solution is cut one TE, Personally I don’t like all the two TE sets anyway, and the 2nd TE mostly just blocks. We could swing Gilbert in there or somebody for those occasions.
Never
go full retard
