Who Watched The Ravens Game Last Night?
Me too.
Liked what I saw. Specifically, the Ravens don't look very good on offense or defense. Be ready for them to come out a little, or a lot, flat at the beginning of the year.
Sure, Flacco had some good plays, but not many against the Redskins first string defense. Lee evans is a nice addition to their receiving core, but he is not enough to help them out. Ray Rice looked like himself. He was able to exploit some oppurtunities for some nice gains. The Steelers will be an apt test for him. Ricky Williams on the other hand, did not have success. I don't know if it was him or the line because the Redskins defense seemed to get nice penetration when Williams was running the ball.
The Ravens o-line did not look good. If McKinney (SP?) is not up to speed for the opener, Harrison and Woodley (Sounds like a law firm or rain coat makers) will have a huge game. Oher seems to be digressing. Maybe he needs another talking to from Leanne Tooey (Also SP?).
The Ravens secondary did not look good. Smith may have the tools, but he doesn't have the experience. If he is on Wallace, look for some nice gains by number 17. Same goes for Brown.
I was surprised to see the Redskins have some runnig success. Shannahan has always had good running teams, but not against the Ravens. The Steelers should see some success on the ground.
Overall, I was encouraged by what I saw. I'm a little less inclined this year than the past few to be concerned by the Ravens. That is not to say they can not pull it together for the opener, as they usually get up for the Steelers, but they do not look like an elite team to me. While everyone has been focusing on the additions on offense and talking about how much they should get better (They are not), no one has been noticing that the Ravens' defense declines a little more every year. I look for that decline to continue this year. While everyone was talking about Flacco needing ot get better, Ben actually got better. Maybe Joe needs to get married. And if he is already married, maybe he needs to trade her in for a Pittsburgh girl (If he can find one who will marry a Raven). Oh yeah, the Steelers receivers got better, the Ravens' best receiver is still learning the play book. Silly Raven, building through free agancy is for kids.
Overall, the first game of the season should be fun for the Steelers fan. The Steelers got better, I'm not so sure the Ravens did.

Not at all impressed
with the Ravens’ O line; Oher appears to have gone into “Ferdinand the Bull” mode. And Leigh Anne’s last name is Tuohey. They’ll score some points, but only if their opponent makes mistakes – they won’t often score because of superior offensive play (well, maybe against AZ).
Defensively they appear to get incrementally slower year by year.
My heros have always been Steelers...

Could the Redskins be better than expected as well?

QBs
I am not saying they are good but they may be adequate. Grossman is too erratic to trust as a starter but Beck seemed to get better as the game went on. I understand it was 2s vs 2s. Maybe we will see how he does next week.
p.s. I do not mistake the Redskins for a good team but if they achieve average that will be much better than I expected of them coming into the season.

4 is more than I originally expected
Looking at their schedule I think 8 games are possible though not likely. 6 games is quite possible. I think for them to get 4 or less will require an active determination to lose.

Skins rank 29th in strength of schedule, and have added a lot of depth...
….they could win eight games.
Homer hates Daniel Snyder but Shanahan and Allen have made huge off-season strides, rebuilding from the bottom up.
They’ve looked good – with a lot of fresh, young talent at running back and wideout.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

Perhaps Snyder is going to try to do a Mark Cuban impression and get out of his team’s way.

Oher is definitely not playing well we are really concerned about him, so we really are hoping Mckinnie can at least be slightly better. If he is the rest of our line will be solid. Birk and Yanda were both out last night and if Mckinnie plays LT then Oher goes back to RT where he was a lot more successful. Offense still needs some work, but there is a ton of potential there. Flacco to Evans is looking great so far and Evans is averaging a little over 20 YPC. All of our WR’s and TE’s are basically first time starters with the O, so the passing game isn’t going to come out completely on point. Wasn’t our best D performance, but not worried there at all. We are trying out different guys and it’s pre season. Jimmy has actually looked pretty good so far and it’s been against the teams number ones. The TD pass was more of a mental thing because he was supposed to have the deep third, but didn’t get out there. He needs to clear that up, but physically he has looked great in man coverage. Like I said offensively is going to take time, but we will be better offensively once we get it going. You kind of are taking the pre-season thing too far. We are working in a ton of new guys, so naturally that will take a little time. Should be a great game week one.

Also Flacco has definitely shown signs of progression. Like I said his timing with the WR’s needs work, but had some amazing throws to Evans for the TD, Boldin for the TD and another big 3rd down and a nice one to Dickson. The area he has show progression is in his pocket presence. He has sensed the blitz a lot better and has stepped up or got out of the pocket and made some plays or got rid of it. I’m not worried about the accuracy being a little off at this point, but we have loved how much his awareness has improved.

He should be with the way our line blocked, but he made multiple plays while faced with pressure, so not sure exactly what you were watching.

Just watched a replay of ravens/skins game
I am honestly more scared of tyrod taylor than flacco. I know he was playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers but he looked great. I almost think the ravens would be better off with taylor behind center, especially with o line problems cause tyrod can scramble and avoid sacks with the best of them. Flacco does not look very impressive, especially considering its his 4th year now. With a year or two of progression and learning tyrod looks to be a solid qb, and better than flacco IMO.
Give Tyrod some time to develop
then see how he looks in a couple of years.

That is definitely the position I’m worried about. I am comfortable with the rest of the line, but LT has a big question mark. Mckinnie did look in a lot better shape on the sideline and passed his conditioning test, so even if he can play slightly better than Oher I would be thrilled. If not then we got to hope Oher figures it out quick.

Well there is a reason he is being sent back to the right side. He just doesn’t have the build to be a legit LT IMO. Mckinnie should be able to at least give us what Oher has and if he struggles we can always send a TE or RB over to help out. Better to just have one hole then keep Oher there and create two.

I will be pissed. For some reason it’s just one of those teams that we are clearly better than, but just don’t match up well for whatever reason. Palmer is gone though, so while I don’t want to overlook them I think we will take care of business this year. Which one? I don’t know…

Yeah I could see the Bills because I don’t know that Fitzpatrick plays as well as last year and they traded Lee Evans and didn’t add anybody else. Defense should be a little better with Dareus and Merriman, but I believe they lost posluzny (however you spell it). They also play in a tough division, so they wouldn’t shock me at all.

That would be as ridiculous as selecting a QB with your first pick in '10 & '11
Oh, wait, Carolina already did that.
If they go 3-13 & Newton looks horrible & they’ve got the 1st overall pick again (not that ridiculous of a scenario), it wouldn’t shock me if they went with Luck.

Even better...
Taking a QB with 3 consecutive 1st round picks…That should incite the entire fanbase to riot on team headquarters…

i honestly dont see anything special about the ravens
dont let Jon Gruden fool you, Flacco is NOT an elite QB. Rice is very good, however the Ravens o-line is criminally overrated. Boldin is not bad, and neither is Evans, although a clueless fan watching last night’s game might have thought (based on how much Gruden loves everyone on the Ravens) that Joe Flacco might as well be throwing to Andre Johnson and Randy Moss in his prime the way the analysts talk about Boldin and Evans. On D, outside of Ngata and Suggs there is nothing really special. Ravens fans have to accept the fact that Ray Lewis just isn’t a special player anymore. Though he is still good, he steals a pro bowl roster spot from a more deserving young MLB/ILB each year (ahem…Lawrence Timmons.) Their corners are nothing to be proud of, and while Ed Reed might find himself in the right place at the right time to snag an INT, he has a very minute impact on the game. Basically, the Ravens are an all around solid team, but I believe they only have the potential to win 11 games and a WC. Maybe they catch PIT off guard and come away with the division, (though I doubt it as the Steelers are far superior at every position other than the o-line), they are not a SB contender. They simply don’t have a roster capable of taking them that far.
I was with you until the 11 games thing
So… The Ravens are not special but you have them slated to win 11 games? Correct me if I’m wrong, but 11 games has made the playoffs every time except for once.. and I am not sure you can say that a playoff team is “nothing special.”
Every team in the playoffs is (pretty much by definitions) a Super Bowl contender…
I’m thinking that the Ravens are 10-6… but if they are 11-5, they are more special than 80% of the league… and definite contenders.
i said they will go at most 11-5
and when i say that they r nothing special i meant that although they are an all-around solid team they don’t have playmakers capable of leading them to multiple playoff wins against teams that have superior talent, such as Pittsburgh, New England, San Diego, or even New York
We have just as many playmakers offensively as you do. Wallace is the biggest threat, but we now have our own in Evans who is averaging over 20 YPC so far. I’m not debating who is better out Hines and Boldin, but clearly Boldin is the better YAC guy out of the two and is a play maker. Rice enough said and Dickson runs like a 4.6 as a TE and is another great YAC guy. How do we not have any play makers? That’s some serious haterade too bro if you are saying we are not on the Chargers level who can’t even make playoffs in the west and the Jets who we beat last year.

I would pick the Ravens over the Chargers any day but the Chargers issue isnt exactly a lack of talent. A good coach like Tomlin or Bilichick would have that team to the Super Bowl in a heartbeat.

Mike Wallace >>>>> Lee Evans
If you think Lee Evans is as good as Mike Wallace, I want some of what youre smoking….
Never once did I say that. I said we finally have a deep threat in Evans. If you look at my posts you will see I stated multiple times that Wallace is the best WR on either team.

That sentence says you believe Evans is equal to Wallace.
Wallace is the biggest threat,
Clearly stated Wallace is the biggest and I am saying that we now also have a deep threat in Evans. Re-read this thread and I probably said it 3 or more times that Wallace is the best.

Mike Wallace, Hines Ward, Emmanuel Sanders, Antonio Brown, Jerrico Cotchery >>> Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, Tandon Doss, Torrey Smith. This isn’t even remotely close.
Miller is better than Dickson, but the Ravens do have better depth.
What exactly makes you think Ray Rice is better than Mendenhall? The only difference is your OC and QB loves to throw passes to the RBs, while our OC would much rather throw WR screens… for what ever reason.

But its close in that dept, RR has a lot more receptions..though, Flacco dumps the ball off a lot to him, esp when in trouble

I personally don’t see anything wrong with it. usually if he gets Rice open in space yes he goes there because you would love to have your best offensive player one on one in space, but he usually goes through his progressions first. Also our WR’s and TE last year were slow as sh**, so they didn’t gain a ton of separation and at times were covered fairly easily because we couldn’t keep the defense honest with a deep threat.

I think Rice is better just because of the overall game. Not only because he has more yards, but based on what I have seen. Rice has unbelievable hands and even lines up at receiver. Also he has a higher YPC average than Mendenhall. I think Mendenhall is solid and I’m not trying to take anything away from him, but IMO Rice is the better back.

Why don't you ask the Saints?
I think most people considered the Saints contenders…right? What happened when they met Seattle in the playoffs?
Are you saying that the Saints were more of a contender last year than the Seahawks, who beat them in the Wildcard game?
Anyone who is in the playoffs has to be considered a contender…
disagree
anyone who is in the championship game is a super bowl contender, you can’t contend for a super bowl unless you’re in the game that can put you in a super bowl
upsets happens all the time, the saints weren’t super bowl contenders either

its the schedule
They can make the playoffs as a wild card this year and still not be special. If you get to play the Bengals and Browns twice and the weakest NFC teams aka NFC West you should have a record that is good enough to get you in the playoffs! Pittsburgh has roughly the same schedule this year and I beleive they have a legitimate chance to go 17-0 this year. Its not probable but it is a possibility : )

I doubt it as the Steelers are far superior at every position other than the o-line), they are not a SB contender. They simply don’t have a roster capable of taking them that far
Give me a break.
S- I actually like ours better. Troy and Ed are a wash and I personally like Pollard and Zbi over Clark and Mundy. Both fans will take their own guys so just leave it as a wash
CB. Ike is the best on both teams, but after that I take all of our CB’s over yours.
LB- You guys definitely got that. Best in the league.
DL-Ngata is the best, but if healthy you guys get the nod slightly for now. Smith and Keisel are big injury concerns and we have a ton of youth on our D line, so I wouldn’t say far superior, but you get the nod.
OL- we got it.
WR- Wallce is the best IMO and I give you a slight nod because you have more chemistry, but talent wise it’s very close. We have some young guys making plays (not Torrey), then Evans and Boldin have very good chemistry with Flacco. Not superior at all.
RB- You will take Mendy, we will take Rice, call it a wash.
TE- Heath has the nod blocking, but I think we can match you as far as pass catching. Dickson is very good and so is Pitta. I don’t think we will miss Heap as much as people think.
QB- Obviously you guys get the nod. I’m not going to say Flacco is on Ben’s level because he’s not. I do however think he can be in that next tier of QB’s. Flacco has progressed in every season and has won in the playoffs. There is no reason to think his progression just stops when he actually gets more weapons than he ever has had. It will take time to get all the pieces going, but we like what we see.
I have no problem with you thinking you are better than us because you guys have had our number, but to say you are far superior than us? All I have to say is C’mon Man.

A healthy TP>Ed Reed.
Polamalu creates fear in QBs because you can’t game plan for him. He’s liable to show up anywhere, and has permission to do just about anything. Reed’s great in coverage and at disguising his role, but rarely will he show up at LB, and even more rarely will he stuff the run.
Troy has the best defensive instincts in the NFL.

Here's where I see the big difference...
Historicaly, your defense has carried the Ravens – I mean, really carried (Won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer). Your defense has been in decline for the last few years. Some teams have been able to run against the Ravens and their pas rush is not what it needs to be. That defense used to hide a lot of flaws. Not any more.
While you have the tools on offense, and you think your receiving core is close, I beg to differ. Hines (Hall fo fame contender), Wallace (If he gets better, as he has every year, devistating at stretching the field), Brown (You remember him from the playoff game. He has shown definite improvement), Sanders (Let’s just say no improvement), Cotchery (Could be a one or two on most teams) and one more. I like our receiving core a lot better. Oh yeah, they all (Except Cotchery) have really good chemistry with Ben. that goes for Heath too.
That being said, the Ravens decline defending the run, play action pass, and the Steelers superiority at receiver will give the Steelers a big advantage.
Hines is a hall of famer, but do you really think he hasn’t lost a step at all? I’m not talking about career accomplishments I am talking as of now. No doubt Wallace is the best, but Boldin is a beast and Evans looks like him and Flacco have been playing together since grade school. We also have some young guys like Doss who has amazing hands and great route runner and David Reed is just a playmaker. Like I said I give you guys the slight nod, but in no way is it far superior. Also you act as if your defense hasn’t helped you win some Super Bowls. Big Ben has made his fair share of plays, but you are fooling yourself if you don’t think your D has been a big part in you getting there. Also our D will be fine. The pass rush is much improved and like the O we are giving younger guys bigger roles. We will be fine there.

Doss
He did show nice hands on at least one catch I saw.
I think the Ravens receiving corps is better than it was last year but I also think the Steelers corps is better than it was last year. It will not matter if your O-line can’t protect Flacco.

Agreed. O line is the key, but we really are only worried about the left tackle. We have one of the best guard combos in the league.Birk needs to get healthy, but started snapping this week which is good. Oher has sucked at LT, but was dominant on the right. I personally think McKinnie can at least give us what Oher has. If he gives us more great and if not we probably will need to slide leach over to help him protect. Overall I think we will be fine on the line it’s just the LT spot that could be a problem and we may need to provide extra help on that side. Luckily as I mentioned in earlier post that Flacco’s pocket awareness has improved significantly. It all starts with our line, so we will just have to see how it turns out.

No we aren’t. Our secondary is stronger than last and our pass rush is vastly improved and a lot more aggressive. Didn’t look great against the run last night, but we haven’t had a problem the other two games. Like O we have a few guys a little banged up and are working some younger guys in. We have a ton of depth on the line and it’s just a matter of getting these young guys ready. We are not worried at all on D as we feel we have gotten younger and better.

We love the guy, but his blocking has dropped off huge. Statistically he was one of the worst blocking TE’s in the NFL last year and while he has sure hands he is slow and doesn’t offer much YAC. We may lose a little consistency, but we will make up for it in big plays. Ed Dickson is a stud. This guy will be a deep threat and offers a ton of YAC. Pitta looks just like a younger Heap. Not extremely athletic, but good size, arguably the best hands on the team and knows how to get open. I’m actually not worried there at all.

I’m a huge fan. And you’re right about Heap, you’ve got 2 really good young (well ok Pitta is BYU so he’s not that young in years but in experience he is) TEs. This year maybe a little soon for them to realy contribute hugely but I have every confidence they will sooner than later.
But I’ll take our WRs over yours for the same reasons you’ll take your OL over ours. Chemistry. I think ultimately our OL this year will be better than last year. As a group playing together our line that finishes up the season should have been dreadful. 1 Experienced guy, 2 rookies (one undrafted), a washed up, half deaf Cowboy and a career backup just in from talent lite Buffalo. For the same reasons I epxect your WRs to be better this year I expect our OL to be.

Fair enough. That’s why I give you guys the nod right now at WR because Ben has got to work with all them and their chemistry should be a lot better than ours. I think based on pure talent though they are fairly equal. It will all come down to how quickly Flacco develops with the younger guys because he already looks good with Boldin and Evans.

on pure talent I'd agree with you. Boldin could be a stuf, so could Evans
Always been a fan of both, though they’re very different guys. I think it’s fair to say our young WRs are developing a lot better and faster than the Ravens and I would still take your OL over ours, especially if McKinnie can lose some weight and let you shift Oher back to RT. That would look a very very good OL. We still have a lot of work to do with ours for sure, but given the improvement Sean Kugler got out of a bunch of inexperienced or supposedly washed up guys last year I’m very hopeful. Talentwise it’s not even close. I think Pouncey is our only OL who would walk into the Ravens starting lineup but on the OL in particular pure talent is not all you need.

Since when is Keisel an injury concern?
And I still don’t think WR is close at all. The Steelers have 5 good WRs while the Ravens right now have Boldin and Evans, outside of them Doss is the only one showing potential unless I’m missing something.

David Reed. He has shown a ton of potential at WR and also lead the league in KR average before he got hurt. Also many of us have been surprised by undrafted rookie Laquan Williams. Made a game changing play in every pre-season game so far and may have outplayed all the young guys in camp so far.

Normally a rookie CB making mistakes would be no big deal
But apparently Foxworth has been looking poor as well. Who do the Ravens have besides Webb at CB right now?

Surprisingly our best CB right now has been Cary Williams who is a 3rd year undrafted player. He is 6’1 and has outplayed everybody. We are lobbying for him to start. He shined in last pre-season, but didn’t see the field at all last season. He was questionable to make the team this year and has worked his way up to starter so far. Foxworth definitely is not ready. We have Chris Carr still who was our most consistent CB last year, then Webb and of course Jimmy.

It's Pre-season!
I dont take much out of it either way. One area of concern I would have, is that RR got most of his yds in the third quarter against the skins reserves..Evans looks VERY good, he can be a problem for us..BUT not anymore than ward/wallace/sanders/brown/cothery, this is where we have a big advantage..RR still over Mendy at this point due to his receiving abilities..

We were able to accumulate 304 total yards of offense and 21 points in less than 2.5 quarters, but our offense wasn’t impressive…
Didn’t you guys score 7 points against the Skins?

No they didn't.
The comentators said the ‘Skins second string was in during Flacco’s second touchdown drive.
I saw Kerrigan, Orakpo, Hall, etc all playing. Go watch again if you like.

its the 3rd preseason game
the 1st string was probably in there the whole first half. Plus, don’t trust announcers, they are retarded.
They talked so much about the Steelers-Ravens game that it nearly made me sick. The Ravens have to play more then just the Steelers.
Yeah the media is dumb some times. I read an article the other day about how great your WR Mike Williams is (talking about Wallace lol ).

So much arguing over a preseason game. The next game the Ravens really care about is on September 11th.
Yep
It’s all pretty meaningless at this point, but it gives the lads a chance to talk football.
Ravens suck!!

I can't believe
that none of you have addressed Wyofan’s really important comment:
Maybe Joe needs to get married. And if he is already married, maybe he needs to trade her in for a Pittsburgh girl (If he can find one who will marry a Raven).
In fact, Joe did get married this summer. I don’t think she was a Pittsburgh girl, though, which may turn out to be a big mistake.
And speaking of September 11th, I’ll be at that game. Do any of you fine Ravens fans have suggestions for how I should behave in order to draw the minimum hassle from the Ravens faithful? Naturally I won’t wear a t-shirt suggesting any disgusting things that Ravens fans can do to themselves, unlike the idiot Raiders fan in CA. But I don’t want to go undercover either. And I do want you to know that although I’m sure it isn’t true of all Pittsburgh fans, I have been unfailingly polite to fans of other franchises that I have encountered at Heinz Field.
And in case you all are wondering why I would travel to Baltimore to go to a game, living in Pittsburgh as I do, my Welsh son-in-law is visiting and has always wanted to see a live Steelers game. This is the only regular season game happening while they are visiting, and it is the best one I could possibly take him to, anyhow. Games with the Ravens are, as we all know, as good as it gets!

DAMMIT MOMMA!
I always go to those games, but I cannot this year because of a bachelor party. I would have loved to meet you. Instead, I will be stuck with 15+ drunk Ravens fans who love to talk trash. Oye!
My suggestions are wear your colors with pride. Don’t talk trash and be polite to the fans you do meet. If someone yells something at you, just ignore it. That has always worked for me. Also, I always cover my jersey when I go into the bathroom, but I don’t think the women’s facilities will be as harsh as the men’s.

Good advice. I always joke a bit with people around me early on, try to make some friends, and definitely go undercover when you leave your seat.

Dang! That would have been really fun!
Thanks for the advice, both of you. I will try my best to make my son-in-law behave. Fortunately he is large and strong – he used to play semi-pro hockey, and was the enforcer. So hopefully that means he is used to trash talk. Maybe I’ll have him escort me to the bathroom, and hope that the gentler sex will prove to actually be that… Or maybe I just won’t pee the whole time. Since I’m not a beer drinker, that might be easier for me than for some…

Every stadium has them
Some poor (and thoughtless) fellow wore his Saskatchewan Roughriders hat to the Bomber game on Friday. He was constantly yelled at and mocked by people “Riders Suck” and “1-7”, which was the Riders record at that point. I think there may have been close to 100 people yelling and chanting at one point. The odd part was the Bombers were playing the Hamilton Ti-Cats so the Rider fan must have just been a masochist.

I agree
with those who have said that you can’t pronounce an arch rival as being in a state of decline based strictly on a preseason performance. The Ravens are a solid team and you better believe they’ll be ready for us on the 11th. So we need to be ready too and step up.
