Ask a Panthers fan

Greetings Steelers fans!

As you all know, the Panthers and Steelers meet up in their annual Pre-Season game tonight to (finally) close out the exhibition season so we can get the party started next week with the games that actually mean something.

You guys have already posted an "Ask a Steelers fan" fanpost over on Cat Scratch Reader, so I'm here to return the favor to you guys. If you have anything you'd like to ask about the Panthers and what you should expect for tonight's game, feel free to ask and I'm sure someone from CSR will stop in and answer any questions you have.

I don't know how long the Steelers plan to play their starters, but it's been reported that the Panthers are taking the standard "starters are only playing a few series in the first quarter" approach, so you'll probably get to see a lot of Derek Anderson tonight. (I'm sure you're just as excited as we are.)

Anyway, if you have any questions for us, feel free to ask away!

Every year we have a new player come into camp who captures the fans’ imaginations. I don’t mean the 1-3 draft choices. I mean the 5-7 round and UDFA who does something special or shows something special in the camp that get everyone interested and excited. Two years ago it was Issac Redman who most NFL fans still haven’t heard of but they will this season. This year it was Baron Batch.

Who is your Redman/Batch this year?

Technically he wouldn’t count, but Armanti Edwards fits that bill since he didn’t get hardly any playing time last year (for whatever reason). It’s a touchy subject in Panther land because there are three camps: those who think he should be the starting QB, those who think he will be fine after a year or two of seasoning at WR, and those who think he sucks and should be cut. He’s greatly improved his receiving ability and punt return ability in the offseason, even though he had a ill-timed fumble on a punt return last week against the Bungles.

To me, Kealoha Pilares was going to be “that guy”, but he suffered a high ankle sprain earlier in the week and he may go on IR. We don’t know yet what the team plans to do with him, but he was a 5th round pick that has a chance to be dynamic.

Injuries to guys like that can make them or break them I think

Some grow and overcome the adversity and others not so much. I hope your young guys do well.

Hardy… sure, he’s been on the team for a couple of seasons but he isn’t called the Kraken without reason. A cheaper version of Julius Peppers and he WORKS a lot more plays than Pep would.

I’d say Pilares. Hopefully he’ll catch on, overcome his high ankle sprain and make some waves. The Panthers have been without a valid #2 WR for years… they NEED one badly. LaFell kind of showed flashes… Gettis the same… but A Edwards is the one that’s shown serious improvement and dedication to improve…

Hardy hasn't looked good in camp though

The only thing he’s looked good doing this camp is sliding across asphalt while riding his bike.

+1 to Hardy

Hardy came out of the gate as a 6th rounder last year and, for the most part, outplayed our 1st and 4th round DE’s in Brown and Norwood. We expect big things, and he will be starting at RDE.

kudos BW

For sticking with your team in the rough years! We had a debate here in Steeler Land about why would the Panthers want Cam to be like Big Ben? What is a Carolina fan’s perspective on it?

by steeler fever on Sep 1, 2011 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think most Panther fans want Newton to be like Ben in the way that

it;s hard to take him down. Being theyre both big men he is 1 of the examples of how we want Newton to perform. Freeman from the Bucs is another qb a lot of us want him to be like. But not too much like either of them, jsut a bit of both along with himself.

To add on to what MrBernz said...

I want Cam to be like Ben in that I want him to go 15-1 as a starter with a trip to the NFC Championship game.

What the majority of Panthers fans want is a franchise QB. We’ve never had one. The best QB we’ve ever had is Jake Delhomme (or Steve Beuerlein, depending on how you look at it). We don’t have a Joe Montana, or Troy Aikman, or Dan Marino in our history…we want one, and a lot of fans think (or hope, depending on how you look at it) that Cam can be that guy.

I do it awesomely.

by BusyBeingAwesome on Sep 1, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I picked the Panthers to follow when they came into the league because of their lack of history… I wanted a new team, not one that’s had decades of history and hundreds of games and players to follow.

I thought it was great when KErry Collins was drafted. Then I saw him play… and Weinke… and Peete… and Bauerlein… and Delhomme… and Testeverde… Moore… Pickles… and now Cam.

Here’s what I’m hoping for:

A QB that stands in the pocket and is able to avoid the rush.
A QB that’s got a rocket for his arm and can throw the deep bombs for points.
A QB that can move when he has to.
A QB that’s accurate.

I want a QB that can shrug off the first attempt at a sack and possibly even the second and still get the ball out and into his WR or TE’s hands.

We’re tired of having QB’s that lead the league in INT’s (Kerry Collins did) and Jimmy Clausen couldn’t even get the ball past his Olinemen last season.

I want a franchise QB. I want Peyton Manning, Big Ben, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Joe Montana… I don’t want Danny Wurffel, Ryan LEaf, or JaMarcus Russell.

Luckily though, it looks as though some of our young bucks are ready to make the leap to #2 OR #3 corner.

team strengths

So what are the Panthers’ strengths and who should I be watching tonight, assuming my kids’ preseason game ends in time for me to see the start of the Steelers vs Panthers.

Our strength is our running game, especially DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. But, you won’t see much of them because they’re already in regular season form. Tonight’s game is honestly going to be Rivera’s opportunity to see who gets cut and who doesn’t, so expect a lot of our 2nd and 3rd units playing 95% of the game.

Making the team

This is where a lot of up and comers are going get a chance to make the team. I enjoy watching these games when I know who they are and how they have done so far.

Stevenson Sylvester made the team last year based on how he did in the 4th preseason game. Now he is a special teams ace and is a backup ilb who has a good chance of being a starter someday. The thought of him in his prime and Timmons as the wily vet on ilb positions is scary in a very good way. Currently Timmons is entering his prime and Farrior and Foote are the wily vets.

does that count? I think he gets a $10,000 check from a Colgate sponsorship everytime his teeth sparkle during a game.

So what was the consensus on Newton being the first pick in the draft, particularly after picking a qb high in the draft previous years?

by worldtrip on Sep 1, 2011 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

What I meant was particularly after using your highest pick last year for a qb

by worldtrip on Sep 1, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't speak on behalf of all Panthers fans

But I was glad they pulled the trigger on Cam. There are a lot of criticism’s and he has a lot of work to do; however, he seems to have the drive and the upside for Cam as a QB goes pretty far up. I also was never a big fan of Clausen though I support him as a Panther.

A lot of Panthers fans are torn on the decision to spend our first pick two years in a row on QB’s and there are still fans that don’t believe Newton was worth the 1st pick overall. We’ve heard it all over and over again (Spread QB, not enough experience, not smart enough, run first pass second) and it’ll really come down to how he performs.

In the end, the choice was either Cam Newton at QB or Marcel Dareus at DT. The majority of the fanbase wanted Newton.
As one who felt DT was the way to go, I am good with the Newton pick and completely understand it. He’s dynamic and has the tools to succeed. My reasoning for DT was a dire need to improvement at that position and the strength of the QB draft class next year. Also, wanted to see if Clausen showed any type of improvement over a horrid rookie season.

by GooseCreek on Sep 1, 2011 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

other option

Was to trade down and pick up more draft picks. Yall could use help in a lot of areas besides just QB. You could have picked a more pro ready QB later in the first or in the following rounds. Look at Mallet who the patriots picked up in the 3rd. That guy had the best arm in the draft, came from a college that runs a pro style offense, and was the vocal leader of his offense. But fell to the 3rd because he might have once smoked pot and got mouthy with the media during combine and didn’t perform well in the agility drills. I think he reminded the Pats of Pretty Boy and thats why they took him.

by steeler fever on Sep 1, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The word 'consensus' is probably the hardest part of your questions

I don’t think there is a consensus yet. That being said, I think the majority are cautiously optimistic regarding Cam Newton. It can’t be understated just how bad Jimmy Clausen was last year, and it has nothing to do with him being a 1st year QB, or his box scores. Clausen showed no ability to lead an NFL team in 2010, he was shaky under center, ran away from perceived pressure too often and he didn’t seem to trust his receivers enough as he threw the ball into the stands on a throw away more than he tried to get it to a WR.

Personally, I hope the 2010 Carolina Panthers season echoes the 1997 San Antonio Spurs… for that NBA team their season was lost due to extenuating circumstances and injuries, the result was that they got to draft Tim Duncan. Carolina deserved to go 2-14 last year, but talent wise they’re not a 2-14 team. Cam Newton was the right decision because I don’t think this team will be drafting top 3 next year.

As it stands Newton’s box score doesn’t show it but he looks a lot better in the preseason that I thought he would based on how raw he was at Auburn. I’m really excited to see him deal with your defense tonight… that will tell me a lot about his development.

Almost missed this, needs to be rec'ed up a bit more

Is Richard Marshall a tough loss or a manageable loss?

His name was getting bandied around in some parts as a possible FA acquisition to replace the “sure to depart for greener pastures” Ike Taylor.

by barnerburner on Sep 1, 2011 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Marshall is horrible

Good Nickle, horrendous #2 CB that wanted to be paid like he was a top-flight CB. Our 7th round pick, Munnerlyn, outperformed him on pretty much every facet last season. The only reason he has such high tackle numbers is because he can’t cover for shit and they always throw at his receiver.

Depends on his knee.

He hasn’t practiced yet, so depending on whether or not they think he’ll be able to suit up in a few weeks will determine whether he’s on the 53 or on IR for the season.

Do you think

Cam can shed the “run first mentality” when the pocket starts to break-down like he had in college quickly and start to develop into a pro-style QB this year, or are you thinking it’ll be a learning process over a few years that will teach him to go further through his prgressions before running?

Seems likely in watching him so far in this preseason. Of course, coaching staff may be giving orders to use the run as an absolute last option right now.
