Report Confirmed: Willie Colon Has Torn Triceps, Likely To Land On IR
A rough week got rougher for the Steelers.
Ed Bouchette is reporting via Twitter starting RT Willie Colon has a torn triceps muscle, and will have surgery Tuesday.
Bouchette tweeted the Post-Gazette was contacted by Colon's agent, Joe Linta. If accurate, it would likely land Colon on the IR, ending his season.
Colon missed all of the 2010 season after rupturing an Achilles tendon in spring practice. The Steelers starter in Super Bowl XLIII, Colon will have now played one game since helping to defeat the Cardinals for the league championship in February, 2009.
He signed a five-year, $29 million contract this off-season, and played in the Week 1 loss at Baltimore.
Stay tuned to see what direction the Steelers will go from here at right tackle, and to get a sense of what Steeler Nation hopes to see happen, check out this poll and subsequent reader comments.

Umm
Don’t know what to say. This hurts badly! What’s with the bicep tears? Do the trainers need to work more curls into the offseason program or what….
triceps this time...
And yeah it’s weird but its mostly a lineman thing. Pushing a 350lb dude around all day makes your muscles pretty susceptible to damage I’d wager.
Triceps aren't the only muscles I'd tear...
Probably a pectoral, a deltoid, perhaps a groin or two…

Salary Cap Question????
Hate to hear this. Two years in a row in an area where we are already weak.
Question…when a player in put on IR is the salary cap number treated any differently.
for injured players, it doesn't matter where you put them it still counts to the cap just like before the injury
otherwise people would be cutting or putting healthy players on IR to subvert the salary cap.
only way packers survived last year with 15 on IR was no cap last year.
question for ya
since we are without any or very little cap space left for this year, do we have to go with who we got? Or is there any possibility of bringing someone in like we did last year with Flozell? I really don’t know much about the business side of things. Just wondering.

flo was set to make $5mm, we wanted him back at less $
he gave us a big FU, i guess he has a lot saved up. maybe he really does have a hotel and doesn’t need the $:) ?
i don’t think we have much cap space, we could sign flozell but we would have to give him a signing bonus and sign him to more than a year to reduce the cap hit. for example we could give him a $4.5mm signing bonus & $910k min base salary (non-guranteed) in a three year contract. . The cap hit for this year would be $1.5mm plus the $910k for a total of $2.41mm but we would have to stroke him a check upon signing for $4.5mm immediately.
this would also hurt our cap the next two years as we will have to absorb $1.5mm in 2012 & 2013 after we wait until june 1st. if we were to cut him after this season but before june 1st $3mm would hit next year’s cap.
not a lot of great options here if flozell is really stuck at $5mm.
obviously if we have $5mm cap room
we could just sign flozell to a one year deal, anyone know what room we have under the cap? i have no idea but i doubt it is $5mm or more??
we now have 2 on the IR and that is not good, Lefty @ $2mm & Colon @ $2.7mm, know way to know for sure if these are exact figures.
oh yea, batch is good for another $935k
so we have $5.635mm cap $ on IR, not good any way you look at it:)
Thanks
for the replay and for enlightening me!

Re: salary cap
Think we have to look hard at the decision jot to renegotiate with A. Smith. He counts what? 6.1m against us this yr? That’s a lot for a guy who probably won’t even start next week.
Question is…do we cut him? Not sure how much was gaurenteed…or what that would do to the cap. At some point we have to let some of the older guys go and have the young ones step up. The days of bringing a guy along slowly are about over.
all of Smith's salary is now guaranteed that wasn't prior to the first game.
he has more than 4 seasons and is eligible for termination pay, if you cut him now 100% of his salary has to be paid within a week or two of last game and the full amount still counts against the cap.
at this point you can only cut players with less than 4 accrued seasons with non-guaranteed base salaries and avoid a cap hit. anything else does zero to help you with cap space.
*you don't have to pay termination pay until after the last regular season game
but it all counts against the cap just the same, like IR :(
Unbelievable
It’s like god , here we go again ! Feel bad for the guy but man someone’s gotta step up

This is horrible news. Now we will have to try and pursuade Flozell or Starks back for a year
because I don’t trust Gilbert yet. Wish we had kept Hills?

This is just f..ing ridiculous
as if the loss itself wasn’t enough… I’m all for throwing gilbert into the fire. He can get used to game action against a mediocre team, and tomlin said after the preseason that he was our third tackle on game days so let’s go for it! Move scott right, and put gilbert where you expect him to play for the next decade.

I wouldnt want Gilbert in yet. Still too unpolished on a team that despite the loss, still has championship aspirations

You don't have to be nearly as polished at RT
as you have to be big, strong and mean. We know that Gilbert is all those things. Yeah, he’ll make mistakes, but he’ll develop.
My heros have always been Steelers...
In the last poll I voted to bring back Adams but...
After the shock of the news has subsided I think it will be better to put Gilbert in there.
Really , how much worse the OL can get? put it at leas against the Seachikens and unless he is horrible, let him for the subsequent games.

have to think Flo will be with us soon
But man, we got every bit of him we could last year. I swear he got hurt in every single game last yr and I kept saying “thats it…he’s gone for a few games” and he just kept coming back. This time around i don’t see us being so lucky.
Unfortunate, but we didn't have Colon last season either.
This is only the first of probably a handful of injuries that we’ll need to deal with during the season. If we can’t bring in a vet like Adams, might as well stick Gilbert in there or one of the other young-uns and see what they’re made of. Put on your running shoes Ben!
Colon was terrible yesterday......
so no big loss. It was a mistake to re-sign him anyway. He won’t be seen again in a Steeler uniform.
But Ben better be ready to scramble this year.
I don't think we watched the same game

Agreed
I didn’t see any sacks on that side. Most of the damage was from the middle which was Legs department. However some really bad blocking calls and schemes IMO were more the cause. Some of those gaps were gigantic.
Think we are going to see Ramon Foster pretty soon
And yeah, Arians didn’t really account for the way Baltimore was pressuring us in his play-calling and blocking schemes.
But some of it was just us being terrible. They were running simple twists and stunts with just their down 4 that high school teams run, yet they were still all over Ben.

any east coast folks gonna try and watch the raiders game?
kick off is like 1:20 am…? ridiculous. i bet it still gets a huge share.
If you stay awake until 1:20 or so Tuesday morning in the East, you’ll get to see this second game of tonight’s ESPN doubleheader. I’ll be TiVoing, thanks.
Seems king must have a different sense of time.
any open game threads?
we just had a monsoon past thru here tonite- some 3 to 4" of rain in 4 hours.
geez, the dolphins look like a JV team
but mike pouncey looks damn good. wouldnt it be nice if he was on our OL.
It all comes down to
do screw with the cap even more than we have already and bring in Flo or stick Gilbert in there and let him learn. If Gilbert gets eaten up too bad you can still get Flo later (maybe). If Gilbert’s our guy down the road, I lean towards letting him play. J. Scott is not a permanent answer to anything, so put him in at RT until we find another.
I don’t know the effin answer — God, I’m going to puke for the second day in a row!

I'll say it again.
We’re dead against the Pats. You want to see how an empty set works? Out of the end zone to the house!
ras-i-dowling is a huge improvement
took away one touchdown and cost me my spread win:)
Release Aaron Smith & Willie Colon
Aaron Smith has 1 preseason tackle & 1 assist vs Ravens. Has contributed 1 poor game in 2 years, release start Ziggy with Cam as backup & sign someone who can contribute. Colon should be released, sign Adams or Starks & move on. This is a business.
releasing smith at this point clears no cap space
once he is on roster for 1st game he is entitled to termination pay once in his career (i am assuming he has never got it before) which means if you cut him you still owe any base salary for this year (guaranteed or non-guaranteed) and it all counts toward the cap. so i don’t think this an option.
Agreed
They should have done it a month ago and put that 6m into the oline. Now it would just be a disruption
and you have to figure
he is only due salary this year of $4.5mm but his cap hit is $6.1mm, had we cut him before the first game we would have opened up $4.5mm in space but still had $1.6mm on the books with no player to show for it. this is a no-no and to be avoided at all cost.
coming from an uncapped year into a tight capped year with a veteran team leaves you very little room to maneuver. Cutting Aaron Smith is a no-win situation because the guy coming in to replace him has to count for the new salary plus Smith’s $1.6mm in dead money.
Yeah good point
See, I know the FO knows more than me. Too late now either way………..I’d prefer Starks over Flo I think
But, this is a business. lol

Tough spot here
When it rains… ugh…
I think here you have to either throw Gilbert in, which I’d like to try, or get on your hands and knees and hope one of those two OLs sitting at home is willing to serve you a plate of love.
I doubt that’ll happen though. And I don’t think the Steelers would cut anybody, especially not Smith despite his high salary.
Throw Gilbert in and resign Max Starks ...
If the Steelers believe he is the LT of the future, get Gilbert some experience now. He’s one play away from being the starting LT anyways. If he’s healthy, I’d rather take a 29-year-old Starks over a 36-year-old Flozell. Can’t squeeze blood from a turnip. Steelers should be happy that they got what they could from Flozell this past year. I wouldn’t press my luck going that direction again, particular when he already turned down the opportunity to restructure his contract to stay.
And Starks does a better job blocking Suggs than J. Scott or Flozell every day of the week. At least the Steelers have experience with this type of thing. Sometime this week, Mike Tomlin needs to tell Aaron Smith that he appreciates everything he has done for the franchise, but it is Ziggy’s time to start now. Smith hasn’t done it for the preseason or that first game. And if Keisel doesn’t pick up his play, put Cam in there and let him get some tick.

Who's going to replace Colon's two penalties/game now?
Wow, you would have thought the Steelers lost Roethlisberger for the year. So Colon has managed to play ONE game in two years now. Well, the one positive that I always gave Colon was that he was at least durable. Scratch that now. The reaction of some is similiar to last year when Colon and Smith both went down and the Steelers didn’t miss a beat. He is very replacable unlike Troy or Roethlisberger. If the Steelers do bring in Flo then I have confidence in him to do the job like he did last year. He did a solid job but how much mileage does he have left?
I wouldn’t mind to put Gilbert in there and get his feet in the fire but the lockout hurt his development. Do the Steelers want to risk that? Even though he is being groomed to be the future LT, he did play RT in college. However, that is a really inexperienced right side of the line if they keep Legs in there, which they shouldn’t as he is not a starting RG in this league.
With the Steelers being over the cap by such a large sum next year they should consider giving Colon his walking papers even though the cap hit would be high for that season. Still how can anyone justify keeping this guy around after nearly two years of producing literally nothing?
Proud fan of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams and the Pirates too.

but it’s cool that i’m considered someone who has a hard time acting like a man.
i have learned a lot today
This is bad news, but even though Colon represents the Steelers second best offensive lineman, he's still slightly above average (in my opinion)
If they can somehow get Adams to play another season, they’ll be fine. Even Starks would be okay as long as he’s not too overweight. However, even if he is, the Ravens signed a horribly overweight guy just recently to play left tackle and he did just fine in week one.
this sucks
but the sky isn’t falling. Instead of 14-2 maybe we will be 11-5 and still get a WC plus we have no idea what type of injuries the Ravens will suffer from here on. Maybe they lose their top two remaining CBs or Ed Reed or Ngata. Injuries hit every team. It is only one game.

Maybe a little early
to give up on the season entirely. The injury hurts, but I suspect it would hurt a lot less if we had won against the Ravens, or at least had a respectable showing. I am ok with either Flo or Starks coming back, and although it would not be ideal I think it would be better than throwing Gilbert to the wolves and potentially opening up a whole new, much larger can of “oh shit” by getting Ben killed. Thank you. That is all.
