Some cuts from other teams
Mostly players I remember from draft research who interested me as potential Steelers, but there's a few guys who might be able to help us throw in too. Feel free to add your own.
Thaddeus Gibson (LB)
Doug Worthington (DE)
Kellen Clemens (QB)
Myron Rolle (S)
Alex Magee (DE)
George Selvie (DE)
Donnie Avery (WR)
Mardy Gilyard (WR)
Sealver Siliga (NT)
Scott Tolzien (QB)
Mike McGlynn (G)
Joselio Hanson (CB)
Reggie Wells (G)
Lito Shepperd (CB)
Jarron Gilbert (DT)
Brandon Meriweather (S)
Will Allen (CB)
Josh Beekman (G)
Terrence Toliver (WR)
Tori Gurley (WR)
Nathan Vasher (CB)
Jeremy Beal (DE)
David Veikune (LB)
Tom Brandstater (QB)
Andre Gurode (C)
Max Jean-Gilles (G)
Brandon Ghee (CB)
Tony Fiammetta (RB)
Tyrell Sutton (RB)
Justin Boren (G)
Kris O'Dowd (C)
I've not really kept up with the careers of most of these guys but Mike McGlynn I was surprised to read about, so I assume there's some story there. Even so, surely an upgrade over Chris Scott?

Donnie Avery – I know he got hurt a few times, but was that why the Rams cut him?
Lito Sheppard – Is his tank completely empty?
Myron Rolle – Call Momma Rollett!
Sheppard was only signed by the Raiders a week ago
so it’s hard to say. No idea on Avery, he looked really promising as a rookie.
There’s some good OL guys up there though, at least some guys who played well initially in their career, like Josh Beekman, and a guy there I would love to see them sign to play Guard for us, Andre Gurode. He may be old but he’s still a pretty good player.

Joselio Hanson from the Eagles
He’s been left the without a job because the Iggles signed Asomugha and DRC but Hanson’s a solid pro and I’m sure he’ll get picked up by someone. But I would think it won’t be on waivers because I think his salary this year would be a decent chunk-o-change
Huh
Didn’t know his name before, but you seem to be on the money:
It’s not a huge surprise that nickel cornerback Joselio Hanson was released, considering how deep the Eagles were at cornerback after their frenzied first week of free agency. But I do think people are surprised that they couldn’t get anything for him in a trade before releasing him. It seems no team wanted to compensate the Eagles and also assume Hanson’s contract, which had $7.6 million left over the next three years. He was an extremely effective nickel corner last year and surely will end up on someone’s roster (Cleveland? Arizona? St. Louis? The Giants?) before long.

I figured Hanson as a possible William Gay replacement
but it’s a new system and picking him up with a week before the season is not really a viable plan for us. Good player though, some other team will do well out of him I think. I figure the Giants. They know him from their division and they need the help.

and we've already tried to get Thad Gibson on waivers once this offseason
odds of us making a second attempt and trying to get Chris Carter on the Practice Squad?
I think odds are on trying to get Gibson to the PS, since the book on him is a bit clearer these days (I’m sure he still has potential, but getting cut by the 49ers and Redskins aren’t exactly ringing endorsements of current ability)

And how many wins have those two teams had in the past few years?

What?
SF and Wash have really bad coaching staffs. They would not realize that they had talent if it bit them in the but. We were ready to fire Haslett when NO hired him. He sucked their as HC. He sucked in St.L. and now in DC? Haslett is not a real Dick Lebeau prodegy.

Does using three so’s to say “so many” not trigger a sarcasm alarm these days?
Maybe I’m getting old.

a year away from football and he was never the most athletic Safety either
but I thought his smarts might translate to the field, I listed him purely because he still has Practice Squad eligibility I think and also because of the complexity of Dick LeBeau’s D. Figured he would pick it up faster than most.
Most of the guys I listed (the young ones anyway) I was looking at potential practice squad guys. I figure Scott Tolzien will sign for the Chargers PS as they’re only carrying 2 QBs and Volek will not be there forever. But I really liked Tolzien coming out of Wisconsin. Obviously he had less to do than most College QBs with that running game but the Badgers games I saw Tolzien looked calm, collected, threw a really pretty pass with a good arm (not great but pretty good) and his accuracy was very good. I read a little on him in camp for the Chargers and it seems he’s picked up the offense very quickly and learning fast.

I wouldn't mind a QB on the PS

There were good reports of Tom Brandstater in Denver
but that was before his fate was essentially sealed by the trade for Brady Quinn and the Broncos drafting Tim Tebow. He may still be worth a look if he qualifies for the PS still. I think he might.

I agree with your take on Tolzien;
game management type, doesn’t do stupid things and takes good care of the ball. He’ll never be a starter, but in the Steelers offensive scheme he could take care of business until Ben or whoever returns.
My heros have always been Steelers...
Scott Tolzien was picked up by the 49ers on waivers
So I guess San Diego’s gamble of going with only 2 QBs and trying to stash Tolzien didn’t pay off. It’s not much of a move for them this season but I would expect with 4 or 5 weeks to learn the playbook Tolzien will be the #2 in San Fran over Colin Kaepernick pretty soon. Kap is still very raw so won’t be someone they’ll want in a game unless the OL falls to pieces.
Tolzien should be a good fit for Harbaugh’s system too. I have to think that’s a great pickup by the 49ers. Though I guess he won’t now be wearing #16 in the pros ;)

I wouldn't consider any for the 53
but there might be a couple with PS eligibility who might be worthwhile.

I think there's a few there
who would be better than Chris Scott, and of course Thaddeus Gibson. But yes mostly PS possibilities. Gurley and Toliver are both tall WRs, or well, a few inches bigger than we have anyway

Tall WR
I am hoping for Wes Lyons to fit that bill.

I think with as little work as Lyons got in college
he is a real long term project and realistically very much a long shot. I agree it’d be nice, but Toliver played a lot in college, he lacks consistency completely. I watched some of his games, 2 games you’d swear he was going to be the next T.O. the other I was surprised that he was actually playing. But I think he’d be a guy who could make the roster in 2012. Lyons? Man I don’t know.

PS for Lyons is what I am hoping
He could be cracking the WR corps by next spring.

Big ben wouldn't be able to argue he's got no big targets then!
Imagine a redzone set with Lyons and Weslye Saunders on the field?

Lars for nickel D-back!
Or is this the wrong sport? I’m SO confused…

Lars us good enough to be our nickle corner

The dream corner that can replace Gay is Litto Sheppard.
I’ve heard about it in other message boards. He needs to be add to the exclusive club of players fans covet. LeCharles Bentley, TJ Duckett, and now Litto Sheppard

One thing jumps out at me -
there appears to be a lot of contract shedding this year, especially guys who have big numbers but are no longer considered quality.
I’m not sure that I see anyone on the list whom I’d take over our roster, including the PS.
My heros have always been Steelers...
Redskins cut Selvish Capers....
…dude might not be NFL material, but that name is strictly HOF!
When I was little, my parents called me Selvish. Or maybe it was selfish.
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.
- Homer J. Simpson
He is a converted TE
so he was very raw coming out of college, he really needs to go somewhere with a great OL coach to get all that talent out. I wonder what team has one of the those…..
