Steelers add Jamie McCoy and Tyler Grisham To Practice Squad

Mark Kaboly tweeted TE Jamie McCoy and WR Tyler Grisham will join OL John Malecki and LB Mortty Ivy on the Steelers 2011 Practice Squad.

Star-divide

McCoy, an undrafted TE from Texas A&M in 2009, had a fierce positional battle this preseason, and was beat out by Weslye Saunders after a solid camp.

Grisham, a 2009 undrafted WR from Clemson, has been with the Steelers the last three training camps, and was on the active roster for a spell in 2009. This is his third consecutive year on the Steelers practice squad, which means in order for the Steelers to keep him there, they must keep a roster of 53 active and inactive players.

Tyler Grisham?

Wouldn’t this be his 3rd year on the PS?

It's complicated

But the way I interpreted it is the Steelers can keep him on the PS as long as they have 53 players on their active roster. Someone tell me if I’m wrong, or if that’s not the reason he’s PS-eligible. He was on the PS for more than nine games in 09 (1 year), and all of last year (2nd year). To get a third year of eligibility, the team has to have a roster of at least 53 players.

what?

why would a team not have 53 players on their roster?

by hasay on Sep 4, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

That’s the part I don’t get either. I think it’s just a pretty loose rule, ensuring a team that is keeping 52 guys – for whatever reason – can’t have a guy who’s been around that long on their PS. Probably not something teams ever violate, but good to have it in place so a guy doesn’t get screwed.

PS players get $5700 a month, and guys on the roster get a lot more....

….only 46 guys dress each week.

The rule would seem to be part of the union contract to make sure that the Bidwills of this world don’t use this as a way to trim expenses by having fewer than 53 roster players, while still keeping a full practice squad.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

That's $5700 a week minimum for 2011

If Grisham has not graduated to the roster after 2 years

Why keep him on the PS? It is not like he is getting that much better.

Why would he stay on the Steelers PS with no chance of moving up?

by Steeler Nation VA on Sep 4, 2011 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

I think it says he does have a chance to move up. He was on the active roster in 09 due to injuries, and he’s been a part of the team for a while, so he knows the offense. It gives them a little savvy at the position if like three receivers go down.

by Neal Coolong on Sep 4, 2011 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

he is getting better though

didn’t get many opportunities in preseason games, but he has gotten quite decent at special teams coverage and impressed a lot of people in camp. He is the perfect guy to call up if someone like Ward gets injured because he knows the offense well, will go over the middle, and has sure hands. That said, if this means that Wes Lyons doesn’t make it, I will be sad :/

Crezdon Butler now a Cardinal

Pittsburgh West added a solid player~ I knew some team would pick him up.

HERE WE GO STEELERS!

Give us this day, a stellar D and forgive us our bogus fines, as we (sorta) forgive Goodell who trespasses against us. And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us a Victory. For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."

Pittsburgh west

Man they sure do love taking our former players. I wish butler the best of luck. And man another year of Grisham on the practice squad. He must be showing a lot to the team though to keep him around on the PS again. I just wish he could contribute to the team during the season. He’s such a tough griddy player.

Tyler Grisham

EXCELLENT hands, good route running, butssmall with ZERO separation skills. He is the ANTI-Limas. I dont see how he ever makes it to the NFL.

Stay thirsty my friends.

I am surprised it wasn't Lyons

Tyler has his merits but Lyons has what the Steelers lack.

"Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity." Jack Layton (R.I.P.)

"My city's still breathing (but barely it's true) through buildings gone missing like teeth. The sidewalks are watching me think about you, all sparkled with broken glass. I'm back with scars to show. Back with the streets I know. They never take me anywhere but here. " John K Samson (Left and Leaving)

Could you imagine what a year on the practice squad could do for Lyons . God with another year under his belt with the system and he could really be what we need in that redone. Ahh one could only hope lol
