NFL Week 17 Early Games Open Thread

All eyes on New England.

The Patriots are taking on the Bills, and both Pittsburgh and Baltimore will know their chances of leap-frogging the Patriots for the 1-seed in the AFC.

Oh, and there are other early games on too. Houston/Tennessee could be compelling. I bet that Vikings/Bears game will be great. So stir your cheese dip, cheer a little for the retiring Jason Taylor and stay on BTSC, making the appropriate joke when necessary.

Bye Bye, 1-seed! Stupid Buffalo…

by Neal Coolong on Jan 1, 2012 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yep they are just awful. This is going to be a slaughter

Hey, we coudl still get the 2 seed and you know that New England is going to lose their first playoff game like they do every year so the 2 seed is as good as the 1 seed this year

No. 2

is all i care about. After the way we played NE this year, I’m not afraid of going to foxboro

I'd rather have the 2 seed

Then NE will get BAL or CIN while we get HOU or DEN/OAK unless both WC teams win.

I like our chances in Foxboro if we are healthy. I think having the 2 seed is critical, though getting home-field would be wonderful. If getting the 2 seed means we play Houston in the divisional round – hooray. But if NE gets Cincy and we get Balt – that would suck

The Patriots don’t have to play the Patriots twice though. Not trying to be a smartass, but you have to factor that in as well. They don’t have to play a 13-win team twice the way Buffalo and Miami do, so the Bills and Dolphins’ records are invariably worse.

What worries me about the Patriots is exactly why everyone thinks they suck

Their defense is HORRENDOUS…yet…they’re staring at 13-3. That shows quite clearly how good that offense is.

Defense barely matters in this league anymore, why is it impossible the two best offensive teams meet in the Super Bowl?

Brady's over 5,000 yards

Twenty seven years since someone threw for 5,000 yards in a season. Two guys do it in the same season….

And those guys are a far second and third place from the league MVP, behind another quarterback.

Yeah, they’re not totally favoring offense or anything.

well not exactly true

The league favors offense

but I think a good defense will still beat a good offense in the playoffs. Especially when you pair that great defense with a good offense. Teams like the Patriots always lose in the playoffs (see last year and the year before). I trust our D this year if we have to play the Pats, Saints, or Packers on this run. Our pass defense is by far the best in the NFL and when you throw in the Woodley/Harrison combo that we will finally get to see in the playoffs and the only team I fear in the playoffs will be the Ravens because of their running game.

But Newton makes less than half of what Bradford makes.

Interesting post from DBN blog site...

… as part of a poll on whether the Brownies should tank game to improve draft standing (poll has overwhelming NO response)

But we are facing the Steelers. Our mortal enemy. Our nemesis. Those cheap bastards. I could never give Harrison the satisfaction of winning. If its anyone else besides the Ravens or Steelers I would want to tank it but nothing could make purposely losing to the Steelers forgivable. If we are facing Jacksonville or Green Bay I would want us to lose but not Pittsburgh. All in all its probably better for us to lose but I couldn’t stomach it. But if we lose I want Ben and Harrison to get crunched as hard as Hillis and Sheard can hit them. And Happy New Year. Keep up hope, it is all we have.

(my emphasis added)

Makes me glad yet again, to be a Steeler fan, when at end of season, I don’t have to hold on to “Keep up hope, it is all we have”
