Week 17 Steelers at Browns Open Game Thread

Week 17 didn't matter much last year, but with Baltimore also kicking off at Cincinnati at the same time, the division on the line, this one's as big as it gets.

A Steelers win and a Ravens loss gives Pittsburgh the No. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs. A Ravens win and/or a Steelers loss gives them the 5-seed and sends them on the road to play the AFC West champion (Oakland or Denver).

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will start, but will likely be replaced at some point in the game. The Steelers will want to give his high ankle sprain as much rest as possible, so expect Charlie Batch to stay warm on the sideline.

Speaking of warm...RB Rashard Mendenhall looks to factor into this game in a big way. After shredding the hapless Rams for 116 yards and a touchdown, Mendenhall looks to carry an offense that will be without LG Doug Legursky. Chris Kemoeatu will start at left guard in his place.

Log in, get comfortable and get fired up, there's a lot riding on this one.

Happy New Year from all of us at Behind The Steel Curtain!

Could use a game feed if there is one. Wouldn’t mind one for Balt-Cincy as well.

All the stations here, and none showing either game. Can find either Denver or Oakland :(

that can happen to a team when you don’t have either of your top 3 qb’s, your starting rb, your best defensive player, and your best receiver.

Well 1 full season after the new H2H rules were put into effect and

We have 2 QB’s who have passed for over 5000 yards and it looks like there will be another 8 with 4000 yards including a rookie.

Me too

read a good article about this that would still make division games/winning the division important. Keep the playoff system the exact same way it is, then after all 16 games are played, re seed the teams going into the playoffs. Which would mean NE #1, Balt #2, Pitt #3, Houston #4, etc….

by YankeeCarp on Jan 1, 2012 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

ive been trying to find the article, without success

but I believe it was on NFL.com. It made alot of sense, basically keeping the exact same playoff system all the way up until the season is officially over, then all the teams are reseeded based on record going into the playoffs. Not sure if im describing it clearly, but it was good cause it maintained division relevance, yet eliminated a lousy 8-8 team like broncos ever hosting a 12-4 team like Pitt.

Problem is, it is all about the money. The more teams (crappy or otherwise) they let in, the more the money flows.

Here are my playoff predictions for the AFC

Wild Card
Bengals @ Texans – Bengals win 24 to 10
Steelers @ Denver – Steelers win 35 to 3
Divisional Round
Bengals @ Patriots – Bengals win 31 to 17
Steelers @ Ravens – Steelers win 10 to 3
Championship Round
Bengals @ Steelers – Steelers win 28 to 6
Super Bowl
Steelers vs. Saints – Steelers win 35 to 10

The Steelers D is playing at a level we have not seen limiting almost every team they have played in the past couple weeks to under 200 yards and will flat out dominate the playoffs. With Woodley coming back, the sacks and turnovers will start coming again and in the 4 playoff games, the Steelers will force 11 turnover and give up just 900 total yards

Wow the Jets benched Holmes on the last drive.

Considering the Jets paid him 50 mil and we got Brown for him Colbert is a genius.

worried that Mike Wallace

might not quite have the Steelers mentality either. Breaks my heart

by blitzzburgh on Jan 1, 2012 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

I agree…As I’ve said..if the ball isn’t landed perfectly in his hands, he gives no effort.
He also don’t seem willing to lay a block

This is the problem with the Flacco hate, people don’t really know who he is as a person. - Mr. Malor. Crazy Raven fan/possible stalker.

I think it’s fair to perhaps think that (especially based on the final drive in last year’s SB) but Wallace is a very good receiver who has come along way in terms of his run blocking, etc. He and Ben definitely AREN’T on the same page right now.

Look for the Steelers to have an offensive attack ala playoffs of 2005 when we beat Bungles, Colts and Broncos. LOTS of passing with the Super 6 receiving targets.

I hope you are right. But I lose a little more faith in Wallace every week.

I think you are right.

Ben and Wallace aren’t in sync right now. I also think Wallace is pressing right now. He will be ok if he keeps working hard.

Dont like Dallas or Giants

but this should be a damn good game….alot on the line for these teams

Just reported on NBC that Peter King has confirmed he will be out for the Broncos game w/ a “serious knee injury”. Just a significant blow to one of our most improved players. He was running w/ such a sense of urgency in the 2nd half of the season.
—Ben not 100%
—Offensive line rotates due to injury seemingly every quarter
—Mendy out
—Woodley w/ a severe hamstring strain that will limit him for the remainder of the season
Things just don’t seem to be “aligning” like they have in recent years.

by WVUColumbus on Jan 1, 2012 8:20 PM EST reply actions

unfortunately you’re right.

I just think "how awesome is it that, despite the bad luck, the bad calls, the suspect play…we’re STILL 12-4…
It’s a good problem to have

Your coaching staff in really good

The good to great coaches figure out a way to maximize their backup talent regardless as to who they are. How Tomlin keeps your team as “focused” speaks to my point about Tomlin as motivator of men one of the top 5 coaches in pro football. It’s a shame that Pittsburgh pulled the Broncos in Denver. Ryan Clark will have to sit out, Mendenhall is out, Ben is less than 100% and so on.

As a football fan, I want to see the best on the field and would prefer the Steelers at “full strength” and kick ya’ll ass under better circumstances. I wish things were different. I see you all getting out Denver, still.

yup-

This sucks. We will rally behind it and who knows- perhaps with Clay (can’t believe I’m saying that) and Redzone/Fumblezone (maybe just a bad game I hope from a ball-security standpoint) we can pound it. Broncos secondary isn’t that great outside bailey so I think we can definitely score some points in this one, but this year the “D” will take us, not the O.

If Mendy did tear his ACL, he might miss the start of the 2012 season

We are going to need Baron Batch to recover and return to the form he was at before the injury

I still want to trade up if DeCastro falls far enough

Or take one of the Bama linebackers wherever we pick.

Pro Football Talk

is speculating the Steelers may part ways with Mendy after the 2012 season. That’s when his contract expires, he’s currently making $650,000 per year.

by SteelStealth on Jan 1, 2012 8:30 PM EST reply actions

Possibly. We got great value out of Mendy and if he did tear his ACL he might never be the same

also, he might have too good of a season next year and be too expensive. Even if he is not resigned, he will be one of my favorite Steelers of the past couple years. I always loved his attitude and how he was always smiling.

If he doesn't show much coming back from his injury I would agree with that move

Decent RBs are extremely easy to find.

Of course! Their stadium is a "factory of sadness."

I spent a miserable lifetime in Cleveland and managed to do so in just three years. What an awful effing place.

good for that miserable bunch of loser scumbags. It’s gotta suck being them. Oh well, it’s only going to be that much sweeter when Mendy is the main reason behind yet another season sweep next season.

As usual, the Browns will clean out their lockers the day after week 17....

…and head out to their golf courses, gentlemen’s clubs and crack houses. Same Old Browns (SOB).

And their fans, dashed yet again in their dreams of the Browns even making the playoffs, will move on yet again and refocus their hatred to basketball. Maybe the might get back to burning LeBron James jerseys.

Another year of miserable failure and sadness at the Mistake on the Lake. The hell with them.

I'm really, really worried about Cortez Allen....

…..he’s been a beast on special teams and a growing force in the nickel and dime….
and SOOOO much better than BMAC.

Homer is holding his breath until they him the kid’s gonna be okay for the playoffs.
