Steelers Gut Out Win at Cleveland, Clinch 5 Seed in AFC Playoffs, Will Travel to Denver

It seemed almost fitting for a year in which the Steelers couldn't exploit opportunities to get past AFC North Rival Baltimore.

At approximately the same time, Pittsburgh's Isaac Redman fumbled during a drive that could have sealed a win and Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham fumbled for Cincinnati, who was driving on Baltimore down 17-13.

Star-divide

Pittsburgh ended up taking home a 13-9 victory, but Baltimore used that turnover to grab a 24-13 lead. Cincinnati's comeback fell short, and the teams flipped playoff positions from a year ago.

The Ravens have the week off, while Pittsburgh will prepare to travel to Denver to take on the AFC West champion Broncos. The time and date of the game has not yet been announced.

Cincinnati also clinched a playoff spot despite the loss. It is the first time three teams from the AFC North have been in the playoffs. The Bengals will travel to Houston in the Wild Card round.

The Steelers suffered another rash of injuries, the most concerning to RB Rashard Mendenhall, who left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury. Early reports on his status do not look good, as Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Mendenhall is "doubtful or worse" for next week.

It was a tough defensive battle, unfortunately marred by injuries to Mendenhall, TE David Johnson, RG Ramon Foster and CB Cortez Allen. Even with that pall hanging over the 12-4 Steelers, they did lock up the league's top scoring defense, besting San Francisco by just two points (227 to 229). Pittsburgh has allowed nine points or less in each of their last five victories.

The injuries will be the compelling story this week, and much of it will surround FS Ryan Clark (who became the team's top tackler for 2011. Clark has a blood disorder which reacts poorly in high altitude environments. It flared up during a game in Denver in 2007, and the result of it was Clark missing the rest of the season and losing his spleen and gall bladder.

Clark did not make the last trip the team made to Denver in 2009. It stands to reason he won't be at this game either, moving Ryan Mundy into the starting lineup.

Clark and the defense thoroughly dominated Cleveland for much of the game, and more the issue in the win was the lack of explosion and movement from the offensive side of the ball. QB Ben Roethlisberger did not look comfortable, failed to step into many of his throws and missed open receivers several times. It didn't seem like the plan was to have Roethlisberger throw 40 times (he completed 23 of them), but Mendenhall's injury seemed to shift that plan to the forefront.

It did help Steelers WR Hines Ward get his historic 1,000th career reception - a shovel pass for -3 yards - in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers survived a last-second hail mary pass from Seneca Wallace, but their post-season fate was already sealed after Cincinnati's last-second pass also fell incomplete.

Don't count out Denver

Saints/Seahawks last year….
Gotta do your homework.

Feels good to be 12-4 but im setting my expectations low for the playoffs due to all our injuries

Here are the injuries we have
QB: Big Ben, Byron Leftwich
RB: Mendy, Moore, Batch
WR: Sanders
TE: David Johnson
OT: Willie Colon
OG: Foster
OC: Pouncey
DL: Smith
LB: Woodley
CB: Allen, Brown
S: Clark (just for Denver), Polamalu (not 100%)
P: Sepulveda

There is not another team in the NFL that has anywhere close to this many injuries and they are all so important. I think and expect to beat Denver but anything after that would just be gravy for me

That's kind of what I expect this postseason as well.

The team has battled through untold adversity this year, but how they can overcome through the playoffs is beyond me.

Yeah the fact that we are 12-4 and not 4-12 amazes me

We have had sooooooo many injuries throughout the year its been absurd. Here is a list of players who were injured/suspended at some point this year
QB: Ben, Leftwich
RB: Mendy, Moore, Dwyer, Batch
WR: Wallace, Sanders, Ward, Cotchery
TE: Johnson
OT: Starks, Scott, Colon
OG: Legursky, Foster
OC: Pouncey
DL: Keisel, Smith, Hampton, Hood
LB: Harrison, Woodley
CB: BMAC, Allen, Brown
S: Polamalu, Mundy
P: Sepulveda

Just an unreal amount of injuries we have sustained this year and I honestly don’t think it could get any worse

We haven't had Batch all year

I think Packers had MORE players on IR last year

Every team deals with injuries each year. We’re probably a little heavier than normal this year, but nothing catastrophic like some teams have faced in the past. GB’s last year was pretty bad.

True

Still do you see us pulling the same run as GB last year? I believe they led the league last year in takeaways, and they are pretty darn opportunistic this year as well. Steelers, OTOH, don’t cause many TO’s this year.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Jan 1, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

but this D

still allowed fewest points and fewest yards. Steeler defense is capable of leading a team to the title without TOs…Don’t get me wrong, I wish we generated more TOs this season, but it doesn’t overly concern me as far as our chances at winning No. 7

Agreed, if we don't turn it over on offense.

If the Steelers can flip the TO margin in the playoffs, they could go deep. The problem is that they haven’t yet, and this isn’t the ’79 team.

true that

the lack of forced TOs combined with the Offensive TOs generally leaves the final result of the game in doubt!

but it's been well documented...

that if it were a salary capped year, as this year is…GB would not have been able to sign and replace the players in the way they were able to last year. If they had to shuffle with what they had on the roster the same as we did this year, I think they would have been hard pressed to even make the playoffs let alone win the superbowl. The two situations as well as the teams’ respective accomplishments don’t compare.

FWP

He has the advantage of knowing the offense. The Steelers have signed old washed up players back to the squad after injuries before. I have know idea if he’s in any kind of football shape, but it wouldn’t be unheard of. I’d think they’d take Parker over Davenport.

I think the question with Davenport

Tough break with Mendenhall- I like that guy, and the team seemed to be making a point of keeping him fresh for the playoffs.

That Cortez Allen injury was a big one, kudos to Tomlin for 12-4 record

Rookie CB C. Allen was the one player (other than Troy) in our secondary that you could put on those new age tight ends and he’d hold his own. I saw a little too much of Bryant McFadden today for my liking. This is a really banged up team right now. Kudos for Tomlin to getting this bunch to 12-4. To be this banged up and then have 3 games on the road is probably asking too much for this squad, particularly the way this team turns the ball over and don’t force turnovers.

With the talent returning next year and probably 8 draft picks, I think this should be the year where the Steelers trade up and get that G Decastro from Stanford to plug in at LG. If not, then I’d probably sit tight an look at either NT Dontari Poe from Memphis or G Cordy Glenn from Georgia in the late first round.

minor nit

I’m pretty sure Clark made the trip to Denver last time, I remember reading that he did some running before the game, but did not play. Happily the Mundy of today is a better backup option than Ty Carter… (Though he did get a pick or two in that game as I recall)

Yeah, I think you're right

I heard otherwise, but since then, I read Tomlin saying he was there and they worked him out.

Looks like this one will develop as the week goes

I saw a quote from Tomlin yesterday saying

that they did tests on Clark the last time they were in Denver. He said the Doctor’s will evaluate the testing this week and make a decision about him playing. Tomlin said it will not be up to him. He will let the Doctor’s tell him if it is safe for Clark.

Does anyone know anything about this Chad Spann guy that's on our practice squad

all I found out is he’s a RB from NIU.

If we have need for another RB.....

It would make sense to sign someone who is familiar with our system. It will be “chancy” to sign someone without pro-game experience at this juncture of the season. Hope he (Chad Spann) is not a “fumbler” – IF we sign him. It will be interesting to see what we do because Mendy is, according to Coach Tomlin, “not going to play next weekend against Denver”.

They won’t sign a RB. It’ll be Redman, Moore and Clay.

He has given us some good plays this year. It’s too late in the year to bring in someone new (IMHO).

More than the injuries

I am scared about losing a playoff game because of Suisham missing a 40-45 yard FG. Injuries are part of the game and kind of unfortunate. NFL kicker missing FGs which should be made is straight disgusting.

But it's Suisham

Sorry to say this, but my confidence level in him kicking FGs is now tending to zero. Even the 19 yard he was kicking today was freaking me out.

Maybe, because I live in Boston so I get to experience them first hand. But I am sure Browns fans might take that crown.

I don’t agree. A large percentage of Pats fans I encounter are 24 or younger, and have been fans for about 9 years at most. I’ve never seen any group of people more pathetic than Browns fans. They are so miserable, the only joy they can yank out of life is seeing another team lose, or even better for them, a major injury. They are classless, lowlife scumbags…period

Of course, there are a few that don’t follow that…but they are few and far between

Steelers finish no. 1 in overall D, Point Allowed, and Pass Defense ...

with only Woodley and Deebo playing 3 games together (and Deebo wasn’t healthy during those few games). The D needs a NT, ILB, OLB and stud safety going fwd and the window will be open to win a few more Super Bowls during Ben’s tenure.

I am woried about Cortez too- DaTruth. Steelers can stop Tebow without 4 corners, but not Brady.

Please let Cortez’ biceps or collarbone ligament heal enough for him to play in 2 weeks. Every team that can run a spread offense will just target McFadden all day. With Curtis Brown out also, this area of depth could have turned into the achilles heel again this year.

He's paid to run the ball

Hey guys Bronco fan here

You guys have had a lot of injuries and so have we. We lost our starting LG to a nasty dislocated ankle injury, our starting FB, and a backup O-lineman. In fact our LB Von Miller who has been playing with a broken thumb might have re-injured it and has been ineffective while playing with a cast. I think we can both agree at least that win or lose, let’s hope our respective teams make it out of the game healthy! Looking forward to chatting with you folks this week, and Go Broncos!!! ;)

by Neal Coolong on Jan 2, 2012 6:27 AM EST up reply actions

It's been a while since we've had an honest fullback

The last two guys listed at FB were Carey Davis, really an over-sized halfback and the current nominal holder, David Johnson, who is much closer to H-back than a FB.

Oh, Dan Kreider, where are ya Dan Kredier!

by theobserver on Jan 2, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Kuper went to my college's arch rival

I never cheer for opposing injuries, but I hate UND.

We lost our starting LG like five times this year. None of them have “starting” positions anymore. They have “regular” ones and will likely shift over to something else by the end of the first quarter.

It’ll be a good one for sure, good luck to you as well.

by Neal Coolong on Jan 2, 2012 6:29 AM EST up reply actions

If we can get Harrison and a fully healthy Woodley

on the field together for the playoffs, that could make a huge difference. I think everyone has forgot what a game changer and terrifying duo that is if they are both playing healthy and in rhythm. With a healthy Polamalu, Woodley, and Harrison anything is possible…..i hope

I hope they will both be healthy next week.
