Big Ben the Giant?

No this is not another Trade [Insert unpopular Steeler Pro Bowler name here] story.

In his leadoff to his MMQB, Peter King reports that, in the lead up to the 2004 draft, Ernie Accorsi stuck to his guns and refused to include Osi Umenyiora in the Manning for Philip Rivers trade, and that would have meant he'd have drafted Roethlisberger instead of Eli Manning if the two teams could not have found common ground, as they did.

The story does not speculate as to whom the Steelers would have picked in that scenario.

Who do you think our FO would have picked then?

I know, I'm cheating, it's my own poast

I think a desperate FO would have had to trade up to get Rivers. Now, I wonder if Rivers for Manning would then have worked for the now-stuck Chargers…

Would Archie have let his son come to Pittsburgh?

What price to trade up for Rivers, then for Manning?

I have wayyyyyyy too much time on my hands now…when’s the draft, again?

I voted for Rivers

This immediately made me think about how Ben, if his timeline would have been similar, would have been handled by the NY media. We always hear about the brutal NY media scrutiny and I wonder how he’d have been treated if he goes through the same stuff there as he has here in PIT.

If I'm not mistaken

Didn’t Cohwer spend a lot of time with Rivers before the draft. If memory serves, he pretty much had a man crush on him. I always believed one of those QBs would have slipped to us, and I think the Steelers would have been happy no matter whom it was.

Thanks

Your point led me to another thought: would Rivers have been ready to take over for an injured Maddox in ’04 and win it all in ’05? Cowher probably thought Rivers would have been readier to step in for injury relief than Ben.

Ah, what ifs…gotta love ’em

IF Rivers had still been there, Dan Rooney probably would have given Cowher the same lecture he allegedly gave him before we drafted Big Ben, and we would have ended up with Rivers.

Remember, Cowher is rumored to have wanted Shaun Andrews, but Rooney told him he missed on getting Dan Marino in ‘83, and didn’t want to make the same mistake in ’04, and that was how Big Ben ended up a Steeler.

Can you imagine

having to defend Phillip Rivers as fans??? I thank the football Gods that didn’t happen to us…

Really? Why? You’d rather defend Ben for his drama than a guy that does nothing more than talk trash to other teams? He’s a fiery and passionate competitor, what’s so bad about ruffling the feathers of softies like Jay Cutler?
I don’t understand.

Every picture that is taken of him… he has “that face”. It’s easier defending Ben over “allegations and dropped investigations” than … that face.

I wish I could post the picture. I’m sure someone has it and will be happy to do it.

PS- I don’t mind a trash-talking QB; but walk the walk if you’re gonna talk the talk. I prefer my men speak softly and beat the hell out the opposition on the field.

He does more than walk the walk though. 2-1 Td-int, averages 4000 yards a season since he took over, completes 64%, and has a 95 qb rating. Those are elite type numbers.
Yes, he’s only 3-3 in the playoffs, but San Diego is a train wreck. There’s a reason Eli wouldn’t allow his career to go in to the toilet by playing in San Diego. There’s a reason that franchise has only had the honor of being a door mat for the NFC team in one Super Bowl.
But, yes, I can understand how talking can rub people the wrong way. I prefer quiet too, but people that aren’t that way don’t piss me off I guess. (except Cortland Finnegan, because he’s a joke)

Well keep the conductor of the train wreck in SD. I watched a few of his games this year… reminds me of Romo. With all his stats and ooooo’s and ahhhh’s plays; choke when it counts. No thanks.

He was horrible for the first 10 games 19 ints against 15 td passes, then rebounded to go 12-3 td/int the rest of the year.
I don’t know, I don’t think he’s anything like Romo, Rivers isn’t usually the sole reason for the loss in big games. Against us in 08, he had a great game, the rest of the team couldn’t pick it up. It takes more than a great QB to win it all, and SD has no eye for “championships players” and by that I mean the solid role players that are the difference between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia

The season is 16 games. He had a horrible 10 games. It’s a team sport and while SD may not field dazzling stars at every position, their season is still usually JUST 16 games. He was drafted in the same class with Ben and Eli. We’ve played a few more than 16 games and that, my friend counts more than TD/INT ratio hands down.

I’m now done talking about this..lol Hugs though!

Ooops, all I was saying is, yes he played horribly but still managed to rebound, that’s all. This was obviously his worst year. But yes, done talking about it.

I’m fine. I’m “Rodney Dangerfield’ing” right now so I’m a little busier than usual, but it’s still fun. It’s strange being in a class room after 9 years, I’m probably going to need a doctor to give me something, because it seems I’ve developed a case of ADHD since the last time around. How have you been?

You shouldn’t let the fact that those people were banned stop you from sharing that picture with me though. Personally, I think trolls are funny/pathetic, but unfortunately interacting with them is inconsiderate of others, so I have to watch it. It’s my mom’s fault I tell ya, she don’t take no crap, if you want to give her some, you’re going to get it back.

It’s tough going back to school! Kudos to you! If my career didn’t require continuing education annually, I’d have long since forgotten how to sit through lectures. (I’m much better at giving them than I am receiving them.. lol)

Just remember when dealing with trolls: Steeler Nation: We’re better than you.
