Agree with all but a couple of comments

Willie Gay is gone. He will command more than we will be willing to spend on him. People want a piece of this D/team. AZ Cards sign him to compete with Jefferson for startying job. 3 dogs (Brown/Cortez/Lewis) on 1 bone (#2 CB spot). The next 2 are nickel and dime.

Also, I see Gilbert going to LT next yr. Starks re signed for small amount to be backup to Gilbert and Colon (who is starting RT). Essentially Starks replaces Jon Scott’s role for similar price. $2.5M

by Majabe on Jan 17, 2012 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

I’d be shocked if AZ went after any of our starters after BMac. And I don’t think a lot of people will forget about his 2009 season.

I just don’t feel super confident about Gilbert at LT yet.

understand but think of it this way, regardless of what we have seen from Gay over the yrs

He is a starting CB on the number 1 ranked D in the NFL. He’s played in 2 Super Bowls and played in Lebeau’s system his entire career.

This, will get him 3 yrs 2.5M a yr and we wont’ pay him that.

by Majabe on Jan 17, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I really don't think it happens

And neither K Lewis or Allen can play the slot.

You don’t think Ray Horton wants guys he can trust in his system in AZ?

Jefferson is going to be very good in Horton defense

He has all the physical tools, that the defense likes. This year was his first year starting on a defense that was installed for the first time. Him, Patrick Petersen, Greg Toler the cards will be set at DB. They won’t sign Gay.

Agree that those 3 are going to be strong for AZ. Especially with Toler coming back after being out all yr.

But make no mistake, if it’s not AZ, this scenario is going to happen. Gay gets paid this offseason and I don’t see the steelers matching whatever that amount is

Gay had a good season last year too

And yet he ended up back with us.

Casey Hampton

You would bring him back at $7 million next year? Do you agree that some team will overpay for William Gay?

by GeorgeQUAD on Jan 17, 2012 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think it will be an option. Who do you start at NT if Casey is cut? A rookie? McLendon? I wouldn’t be overly confident with either.

Would like to see a rotation of Kies, Hood, Snack, Hayward, Mclendon,

See if Ziggy can play NT consitently. I think Omar gets Snack done at the right price. Maybe it’s not what I suggested but will work whatever it is.

Or go get Aubrey Franklin and he would be same price or cheaper than Snack.

It is not indicative of Tomlin to go into a season without a “certainty” at a starting position.

They give him a contract extension

And restructure it to reduce his cap hit this year and maybe his pay overall but that would only be if Casey agrees to it.

by GeorgeQUAD on Jan 20, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Hampton isnt going to be there forever

gotta start somewhere. He is past his prime and now with this knee injury we cant afford to have another 3 years of placing another defensive person on IR the whole season (A. Smith)

by lamberts58 on Jan 18, 2012 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

I never said he was going to be there forever. And the place you start replacing him is when you have the talent to do so. McLendon’s ceiling is a backup and spot starter. We have no one on the roster that could be our future NT. It’s just not the year to replace him.

James Farrior

Do you have him starting or as a backup? Do you agree the Steelers will draft an inside linebacker with one of their top three picks?

by GeorgeQUAD on Jan 17, 2012 1:51 PM EST reply actions

he's still a starter

i see them addressing ILB early, but preferably (i say preferably because we dont know how BPA will go) after OL and NT

by steel.curtain.number2 on Jan 17, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I dont see ILB until later… this team need to stop dicking around and focus on the O-line this draft a bit more than they have in the past… Get a NT and another first before ILB

by rummy67 on Jan 17, 2012 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Actually – they should dedicate at least 3 draft pics especially if Pouncey continues to have issues… is speed is an issue move Harrison to inside and Timmons to Out. Woodly’s sack went up once Timmons moved tothe outside… Place Worlids next to Harrsion on the inside and let Foote or Farrior (if still here) back up or use 2nd or 3rd yr LB as back ups.

Hey, new BTSC member here, glad to be aboard! Although I am extremely sentimental about the older veterans such as Farrior, Hines, and Hampton, I agree that they are all, at best, part time players who must be willing to take pay cuts to have a chance to stick around. But Ahron Smith is the best 3-4 end of the past decade! And with the exception of the week 1 debacle (where everybody got abused) he looked just fine in weeks 2, 3, and 4. In todays NFL, you can never have too many D-linemen, and a guy who takes up a double team EVERY SINGLE PLAY should be kept around even with his injury risks.

For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."

by 1BlkGldFan on Jan 17, 2012 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

So Keep A. Smith around even if he can only play 2 games per year?

And take up a roster spot, take away a young DE development/playing time to help the team. Your logic really doesnt make sense, since your scenario happened in the Denver game and we were left with nothing along the D line.

by lamberts58 on Jan 18, 2012 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

I’m sorry, but Aaron Smith absolutely did not look good in the games he played. He may have had what some would call a “good” game, but he was constantly getting abused. Smith is one of my favorite Steelers ever, but I’m sorry, his career is most likely over.

I see I am totally outnumbered, so I will bow to the power of the masses. Parting point: as stated above, the Denver game showed you must have 6 D-linemen. I count Diesel, Casey, Hood, Heyward, McClendon and…..Al Woods? Sunny Harris? This years 6th rounder? I hope it’s Dontari Poe, I need some good news to get me through the next 6 months of drearyness

Welcome, but Never ...

bow to the power of the masses

if you think you are right. Your opinion is just as valued as anyone elses. You can always “agree to disagree”, and keep the debate civil.

And yeah you’re right about how the Denver game illustrated the necessity of depth at Dline.

Because Denver is a running team? You expect them to be conservative at that point, because in every game besides against us, Tebow can’t pass

Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?

by FrankWyt on Jan 19, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Still thought they approached it from the wrong end.

At that point they had only had 3 d lineman. Plus, te bow had been chucking it deep with success. The guy just got lucky at the same time we got unlucky. With all those injuries and the absence of Clark I thought theynwouldmhave played off. More zone blitz schemes and blanket coverage mixed in with the occasional press coverage.

Impose your will.

by ALDOG on Jan 19, 2012 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe so, but it’s always easy to say after the fact. It was a dumb play, but remember, if Ike didn’t do three stupid things on that play, it could have been different. I think if we would have went to the schemes you say, they would have just ran all over us. It was just our time, and a miracle happened. You can’t think it’s a coincidence that a horrible throwing QB threw for exactly 316 yards…

1. Hines Ward → stay, reduced pay
2. James Farrior → stay, reduced pay
3. Casey Hampton → stay, reduced pay
4. Aaron Smith → retire

6. Mike Wallace → sign RFA tender OR trade for stud OG or high 1st round pick*
7. Ziggy Hood → starting RDE
8. Max Starks → starting LT

10. Willie Colón → starting RG (if he can’t, start at RT, move Gilbert to LT, don’t resign Max)
11. Chris Kemoeatu → cut/ trade to…Raiders? (they could use some more penalties)
12. Name Your Guards → 1st round pick Mike Pouncey*
13. Name Your Punter → Sepulveda, kapinos on speed dial
*14. Mendenhall vs. Redman → trade Mendenhall and Wallace to Miami for Mike Pouncey and Reggie Bush. Bush, Redman split
15. #2 Tight End → Saunders
16. Backup Quarterback → Chad Henne

by steeltown86 on Jan 17, 2012 6:25 PM EST reply actions

Love the trade idea Steeltown!

I would be totally for your #6, #12, #14 combination, especially with what Bush would do for Ben as a check down out of the back field, maybe he’d actually consider throwing it to Bush. Couple that with a trade up to grab De’Castro or nab Konz at 24. Imaging Starks — De’Castro (or Konz) - Pouncey - Pouncey — Gilbert with Colon as a back up at 3 of the four positions. Also if we took Konz, we have a good back-up at center.

After that, nothing but defense (NT, ILB, S) and a UFA WR or two

1. Hines Ward→ bring back as a cheap #4 WR, reduced salary
2. James Farrior→ discuss paycut depending sylvester’s progress & who we can draft
3. Casey Hampton→ keep with paycut. Frankly we can’t afford to cut him position wise.
4. Aaron Smith→ do not offer contract
5. William Gay→offer cheap contract with little/no guaranteed money. Let him walk if he doesnt take it.
6. Mike Wallace→ offer maximum one-year tender & start long term contract negotiations
7. Ziggy Hood→ starter
8. Max Starks→ depending severity of knee injury: if not career threatening offer short contract with little/no guaranteed money; if career threatening no contract offer
9. Marcus Gilbert→ up in the air whether will be left or right tackle, possibly competing with starks or draft pick for starting left tackle, if he would lose that competition would shift him to compete at right tackle.
10 Willie Colon→ starting right tackle with competition with jonathan scott & possibly gilbert.
11. Chris Kemoeatu→ cut
12. Name Your Guards→draft pick/free agent signing and Ramon Foster
13. Name Your Punter→ winner of tryouts/free agency/draft
14. Mendenhall vs. Redman→ split carries 75/25, do NOT extend mendenhall this offseason
15. # 2 tight end→ saunders
