Rotary Dialer

One item continues to bother me - the current offensive philosophy.

Some believe we need to change the offensive philosophy; we must be like the Packers, they are the best, some believe. If anyone noticed we did not get out (win) of our division with this philosophy. You only need to go as far as looking at our losses, what teams did we lose to - Ravens, Texans, and 49'ers. Who do they remind you of? They emulate the Steelers of not so long ago, excellent defense, excellent running game, and adequate QB. For the most part, we gave up on the run game but have an elite QB, the third piece the other teams don't. We keep looking at the Packers but we we may not get the chance to play them if we continue to rely on the pass. The loss in the last year's Superbowl was not because we couldn't play 5 wide, we turned the ball over and were playing with a wounded defense. Look at the Colts, they set their franchise up for failure putting all their eggs in one Manning basket. You have to run, pass, and play defense well to be a consistent high performing team.

This high powered and highly talented offense is great between the 20's but is just middle of the pack in the red zone. If fact, the offense was ranked 21st based on points scored: the reason we have 12 wins is the defense. With the wealth of talent, the offense is not as good as advertised.

Just think if Ben was healthy and the running game came to play every week. It allows Ben to play more effective play action, more deep throws, less pressure on Ben, less sacks, less hits and a healthier Ben in the long run; and likely lower passing stats - sorry to Ben's ego. Other teams have to gameplan both aspects of the offense and not focusing on stopping the pass. You control the ball and keep the other offense on the sidelines and out of their rythm; and you keep your defense rested as well. It's not as exciting for some, a balanced attack will end more often in a better result. If either the run or pass is having an off day, then you can go to the other, with a better chance of success. We are becoming more one dimensional, and it will likely lead to an earlier exit in the playoffs. Mike Tomlin - you once said to fast willy, you don't walk by running titles on your way to work, but neither do you walk by passing titles, scoring, or big ego trophies.

I hate to say it but the Raven's look like the team to beat in the AFC, and they don't have the talent we have on offense. They won't go 5 wide, in fact they have one wide out and a tight end with talent, a good run game, a pretty good defense, and a so so QB.

With this talent our offense has to change next year, either in execution, coaching, or both. Some will say we won the SB with this offense, I would say we won the last drive on individual player ability not philosophy.

The rotary dialer title refers to the local Pittsburgh radio station I listen to over the internet and one of the host seems to think the new offense is the only way to go, and if you don't believe this is the only future then you are still must be a "rotary dialer". Well, rotaries still work.
