NFC Championship Game: 49ers Up 7 Early on the Giants

Photo

Crazy day of football so far with the Patriots beating the Ravens 23-20 on a missed field goal in the last seconds of the game. If you are not in a football coma quite yet, come in and join us for some conversation on what should be another great game. My boy, Vernon Davis, is putting on a clinic.

Cruz is way bigger and a lot more physical

I couldn’t say I’d prefer either one, both are phenomenal receivers

I don’t think he’s that physical. Both are laterally very quick with great hands. They always seem to make catches in tight windows.

While Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Bruce Arians announced his retirement Friday, team sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen the Steelers chose not to retain Arians, against the wishes of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

The sources said the move was made in order to shift the offense back toward its blue-collar identity of years past, in line with the desires of Steelers president Art Rooney II.

Yea I really hope this is not true

Starks is an above average run blocker and Pouncey is excellent but Foster/Legursky/Gilbert/Colon are all better suited in a passing offense. And why would you have your 100 million dollar QB hand the ball off more often than pass the ball. Especially when you have one of the best WR corps in football (if not the best).

Kemo is pretty good at pulling

But our Tackles struggle to seal the edges, which is why our outside running sucks so bad and we use Heath to block so often

If thats that case, it means we need a big overhaul on the offensive line. Potentially means trading Wallace as well

I hope it is wrong. This is a passing league now. As much as I loved “blue collar football” I want to win more so, and right now passing more with our collection of receivers is the best chance at winning

Why would they trade Wallace? That wouldn’t accomplish anything. Will he whine and bitch his way out of town eventually? Perhaps, but he needs stats to justify a big contract, whichever team that will be with.

by SteelheadOH on Jan 22, 2012 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

I font we need to run it 35 x. We just need a few more seconds of pass blocking

by delisixburgh on Jan 22, 2012 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

The Steelers had a decent rush average tho

I think there are a lot of things protection scheme wise that can be improved. Ben can get the ball out quicker. A second TE that can catch would be nice.

by SteelheadOH on Jan 22, 2012 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

In other news, the sun rose in the east this morning

When they said Dan was going to be a part of the team’s offseason management, it was obvious Arians was asked to retire.

They need Ben to sign an extension to alleviate some of his cap hit the next two years, so I wonder how they’ll deal with that. Not a whole lot of time between the start of the next league year.

by Neal Coolong on Jan 22, 2012 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

Not so much the Arians part, but more the return to blue collar football. Our team is built to pass and win by passing. We arent a running team right now and dont have the pieces in place to do so effectively enough

Let's be honest

This team is built to do everything offensively in a mediocre manner. That’s how they performed the majority of this season. We don’t have an identity, we have players who make splash plays and lead us into thinking they’re game-in game-out dominators, but obviously they aren’t.

The freakin’ Vikings scored more than the Steelers did.

by Neal Coolong on Jan 22, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

True

I think we are better suited to pass instead of run though

I understand that

We have Pouncey and Kemo who can run block. Those are the only certainties.

Then you have Mendenhall coming off a torn ACL. Colon coming off two season ending injuries in as many years and banking on him being as good as he was before. Two other tackles who are mediocre at best at sealing the edge. And if Mendy fails do we throw our eggs into the Redman basket?

I’m just saying, it seems like a harder road turning into a running team rather than fixing our once great passing team

by Michael Hewitt on Jan 22, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Kemo is far from a certainty…unless you mean guys uncertain of being on the team next year.

I have a really tough time seeing 68 out there next year. What the Steelers are saying is, we may have all those issues, but we’re going to work through it and get better. We want to find someone who will help Coach Tomlin do that. It’s not Arians. It’s not Ben.

When were the Steelers a great passing team? I think we THINK we were a great passing team because we have guys who make big plays, but pass-to-pass, they aren’t good, for a variety of reasons.

Our pass protection struggles because our passing predicates off Ben getting a read down the field. We didn’t run three step vertical passes – every short throw was a bubble screen that, by the end of the season, it was so easy to see coming, it nearly resulted in interceptions.

The philosophy is it’s easier to run the ball well than it is to pass the ball well. It’s more consistent, and it’s (until recently) been a good indication of success of a team. I’m not entirely sure I believe that 100 percent, but I support my favorite team, and I think Rooney has a good idea of what he’s doing. If we return to power running, I like our chances against any of the teams in the AFC North after watching them in the playoffs, that’s for sure.

by Neal Coolong on Jan 22, 2012 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Good thoughts, and appreciated. Now is the long offseason waiting game to see what we look like next season

Not that I want to become a 500 yards a game passing team...

…but do you really think the Steelers are going to move away from an offense that can exploit the skill sets of the WRs we currently have?

Maybe the answer lies in needing to get a better balance b/w running and passing.

In any event, I take anything published by ESPN with a grain of salt.

United we Stand, melded like Steel

by PaVaSteeler on Jan 22, 2012 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think there’s a difference between a team with stats and a team that scores/dominates.

We’re really neither right now. I think a better emphasis on running the ball will help in the red zone, which was the main reason why we didn’t score much this season.

I wrote a whole thing talking about how the play-action pass is deadly in the red zone, but the only way to execute that is to set it up before you run it. You have to show them you’re committed to running the ball if anyone’s gonna be fooled by it.

We never ran from the 20-yard line in, so play-action was never a viable option. We ran so well against Tennessee, our play-action absolutely murdered them. We scored our season high against them, and it’s not a coincidence it was probably our best running game of the year.

Wallace still had big numbers that game. It’s a matter of how those plays are called in sequence moreso than the amount of each you call. Establishing a run-first mentality can set up everything else easier than a pass-first offense can. My opinion, anyway.

You guys are so far off

First off, reporting has always been like this, well before the advent of ESPN and the 24 hour news cycle.

Secondly, he’s not reporting that Arians was forced out, he’s reporting two sources inside the organization SAID he’s being forced out. Those are two totally different situations, but both are newsworthy.

Obviously, no one in the organization is going to go on the record as saying that unless it’s Art Rooney Dos. Unnamed sources are typically far more reliable than people on the record because people on the record aren’t going to say anything more than what they have to (read every Tomlin presser transcript and find more than 10 percent interesting material). If they aren’t being named, they’ll reveal more.

Fact is, we’ll never know fully, but I’m betting it won’t be Fichtner, the most qualified on-staff candidate, because his background isn’t any different than Arians. Again, that’s not proof, but it’s a pretty strong piece of suggestive evidence.

Not only do I miss seeing so much Steelers coverage, but on the flip side this entire week I was borderline suicidal to see so much coverage of my two most hated AFC teams. Ravens and Patriots. I was hoping to see them both lose today, but it didn’t happen no matter how hard they tried.

He went from barely playing to being Top 5 in the NFL in receiving yards and he scores quite a few touchdowns as well. Antonio Brown benefitted from being one of the few people to return punts and be a part of an offense. Usually once someone is a good enough receiver (Holmes) they are taken off punt return duties to protect their body.

by klompus on Jan 22, 2012 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

in fairness, the 1000/1000 doesn’t really mean “better” Most good receivers don’t return kicks

This 49ers defense is absolutely phenomenal. They are so fast and so aggressive, but they’re without question the best tackling team in the league.

We love to talk about our defense and Baltimore’s, the fact is, San Francisco and Houston have the best coached defenses in football, hands down.

It’s not even close.

The story for us Steelers/AFC fans/followers...

…is how much better the NFC is than the AFC this year. It’s beyond ridiculous how much better the Giants and 9ers played than New England and Baltimore.

The Pats are gonna really have to pick their bleep up in preparation for whichever team they play.

Who decided that this OT rule made any sense?

Why does scoring a TD win you the game but not a FG? I really feel that they should make it that each team always gets the ball once and then after that, first team to score wins
