2012 Defensive changes; Part II
I think people won't be happy.
I have received a lot of criticism for my previous post (link bellow)
http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2012/1/5/2685973/would-2012-defensive-changes-help
where I stated that a lot of defensive changes need to be made for 2012. This was all posted before the Wild Card game in Denver and I must admit I felt like nobody would take it seriously. Now though it seems like someone else agrees with the basics of what I hypothesized some weeks ago. Ed Bouchette wrote an interesting article in which he states many defensive changes are coming. I have linked his article here also.

now does anyone care to wager an opinion now or is everyone still in denial that moves likes these need to be made? Or that even if they don't need to be made for on field reasons they need to be and will be made for money reasons?

The changes that you suggested are, excuse my French, retarded. You want us to run a 3-4 with Harrison at DE, Keisel at NT, Timmons at OLB, and Sly/Worilds at the two ILB spots. None of that makes any type of sense and because of that I suggest you follow this link to truly understand how I feel:

are you still denying that Hoke, Hampton, Smith, Farrior, Gay, and others like McFadden or Foote are going to be gone come 2012 unless they take A LOT less money to stay?
I think you misunderstood why people didn't take your post seriously

Good ideas, only i'd keep gay and move him to NT
then let Ziggy take his spot at starting corner. Then on offense, we’ll start Kemo at QB and have suisham and kapinos be our starting tackles.
The cap issue wasn't the reason we said your post didn't make sense
It was the fact that your suggestions dont make sense football wise. You’re suggesting that we put our 5"11’ Pro Bowl LB at DE? Why would that ever be a good idea?

Cleveland Cavaliers fan - um yeah, about that...
I agree with everyone ripping you
for the second time about this stupid post. It makes no sense. Just because we have guys who are retiring, Free Agents, getting cut, etc., IT MAKES NO SENSE to completely change up our entire defense. But while we’re at it, lets play Coach Dad at NT and move Ike Taylor to ILB. He’s really fast and would be able to cover both sides of the field that way….
"Leave the gun. Bring the Canolis."
You have chosen...poorly
These changes make no sense and wouldn’t work whatsoever. Do you even watch football?
Harrison isn’t a DE and shouldn’t play as one – he’s simply not big enough to take on the pounding nor can he occupy two blockers at the point of attack. Why take our best LB and move him to a position where he’d be entirely ineffective?
Keisel isn’t a DT. Period. And there’s no sense in moving our best DE to DT. You’re far better off moving Ziggy – who is bigger and stronger – to DT.
Why switch Timmons and Woirlds at ILB and OLB?
Your post shows a real lack of football knowledge. It’s like you’re trying to come up with the best pass rush without any regards to the running game, player size, abilities or even experience. It’s just dumb and that you’ve chosen to double down on this nonsense…wow.
Our DLine…I could see this going one of two ways: Ziggy bulks up and moves into NT with Kiesel and Steelhead on his wings, OR we draft a NT, get Snack to take a pay cut and keep Ziggy, Steelhead, Kiesel and McClendon as our 4 DEs….personally I like option 1. I think Ziggy might be more comfortable in the middle, and I’d like to see Steelhead get some PT like right now
2 points...then some rationale.
1) No one is denying that there could be huge changes to the defensive personnel. It would not surprise me one bit if Hampton, Hoke, Smith, Farrior, Foote, and McFadden are all gone next year.
2) That being said, I think your thinking is “let’s put the 11 best guys on the field”. It makes sense on paper or in a video game, but it doesn’t fly in real situations.
First, ideal players fit a mold of a certain size for the position. Keisel is not the right size for a NT, and Harrison would have to put on weight to play DE. I don’t mean sit and eat twinkies all day…I mean 20lbs of muscle. There’s been talk on here of moving Ziggy Hood to NT, I can see the reason, but personally, I disagree with the idea that he’s ideal for the position.
That notwithstanding, players are used to playing in their “natural” position. Did you notice how Timmons played all 4 LB spots this season? Notice he wasn’t able to rush the passer like Harrison and Woodley? It’s hard to switch between the ILB positions. Timmons is our best coverage LB, so it wouldn’t make sense to have him rushing the passer, when he doesn’t do it as well as Harrison and Woodley.
As far as changes for next season, I could potentially see Ziggy going to NT, if there is no one else drafted and if Hoke and Hampton are both gone. I say Hampton comes back on the cheap or they draft 1st or 2nd round NT. There’s a possibility if McFadden and Gay leave that Lewis may start opposite of Ike. We may see a different face at Farrior’s ILB spot. That’s about it.
No more crazy talk of Keisel at NT and Harrison as a DE. Next thing you know, someone will be clamoring for Troy to move to Farrior’s ILB spot and for the Steelers to draft a rookie Safety to take his spot!
Troys played the Predatot LB spot in packages...
..so that claim wouldn’t be as wild as a 6’ 250lbs James Harrison trying to play a 3-4DE that is usually played by a 6’5" or taller, 280-300lbs DE and is used to eat blocks not rush the passer.

of our two OLBs, Woodley is the only one who MIGHT be a fit at DE because he’s 6’2….Harrison is like 5’10 (someone told me he’s closer to 5’9, but I haven’t seen him in person, so I can’t say for sure) and in no way shape or form should he play DE
Oh, I know...lol
Troy COULD probably transition to a ILB, but it’s just that I don’t wanna see that. We NEED him in the secondary.
I agree with everything you've said
except I don’t see the team using another 1st rounder on NT unless he’s obviously the BPA and nobody is close. The reason: they’ve just spent 2 1st round picks on DE’s. I’d like to think that we’d add another 1st rounder onto the offensive line bringing it up to 2 instead of having 3 #1 picks on our D-line while playing mostly scrubs on the O-line.

I couldn’t agree with the article unless pot was not only legal, but also replaced MSG as the countries most popular food additive.
I think Ben's days at QB are numbered
move him to NT.

I must of missed it
Where did Ed Bouchette say we were moving Keisel to NT, Worilds and Carter to ILB, Timmons to OLB, Harrison to DE? Not to mention you kept McFadden?
Someone’s in denial, I just think you do understand who that is…

Trust your instincts
For example, this:

was spot-on. Probably should’ve just stopped right there.
