Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

I love my quarterback but he needs to be put back in his place!

I read this article from Bob Smizik titled "Ben Wants Answers from Rooney". I think Ben has had too much say and influence with Arians and the team is trying to nip it, or have. I belive the next OC will clash with Ben but the O will rise from 21st to somewhere within the top 10 next year, as all the tools are there except for the OL. If they focus on getting some talent on the OL this draft or in FA...I could see this happening.

I included the link to the article below and also included a comment from one of the respondents by the name of Nutting4Xmas. I thing Ben hasn't hit his potential yet, there is so much more he can achieve and let's hope this all helps him get there and the Steelers their moneys worth from Ben. Response from Nutting4Xmas:

"I would imagine Mr. Rooney's response to "what do you want from me" will go something like this:

I want my $100 Million dollar QB to be able to play out the life of his contract somewhere near the level of play he was achieving when I signed him to it. I am sick of watching you limp around the field, the locker room, and the practice facility. I am not paying you 8 figures to have Batch or Leftwich play on Sundays. We stood by you when you were acting like a pompous jerk, nearly killing yourself and then almost getting throwin in jail twice. Now, I am deducting $100K from your first game check. Get out of my office and get on a treadmill."

Excellent Post Collin, could not agree more with you

BB needs to humble a little bit and understand the fans want a better offense all around.

Yup

If you look at ESPN you would think Roethlisberger was calling out Mr. Ronney for a fight in the middle of the street. I saw the interview. Ben was nice. All he could say is I will have to ask Mr. Rooney about what he feels he needs to tweak. Mind you he is answering the question at the Pro Bowl.

What he said in this interview wasn't professional, although he tried to make it seem that way.

His tone was confrontational, and out of line.

I don't agree at all....

…of all the players on an NFL team, an elite QB is more a partner of the team, than merely an employee. He is being paid the big bucks for a reason; if I’m making one individual such an integral part of my organization, financially as well as putting him in charge of such a vital position, I want to hear from him, good, bad, indifferent.

I don’t accept hearing from those who report to me what they think I want to hear, but what they believe, based on the reasons I’ve hired them, I need to hear.

From what i heard about the interview,

Ben was speaking in a positive tone, but reading in print of course doesn’t show that very well. He should probably ask for a high round O line selection again in this years draft, while he is in Mr. Rooney’s office.

by indianasteelers on Jan 27, 2012 11:09 AM EST reply actions

exactly

Reading it sounds like he’s being petulant. He wasn’t. Listening he was being supportive and politically appropriate. Also, don’t think for a minute Brady, manning, Brees, etc wouldn’t have that open door to go discuss with the president the further meaning in all of this.

How about you take the music away from some of the crappy excuse for music that’s been pouring out of studios for year, and read the lyrics alone?

Yeah, the words say enough. “March right up to Rooneys office”
Really?

The Rooney’s may feel that the tail is wagging the dog. If so, replacing Arians was the logical first step.

Perhaps we as fans need to be humbled. We have a two time SB winning QB who has guided the team to 3 Super Bowls and has won them tons of games. Perhaps the QB, who is going to the HOF, has a right to talk to the media, ask questions, play in the Pro Bowl, etc.

I see no reason why he needs to be humbled. He had a pretty great year last year, it just so happened that he got injured at an inopportune time and the defense decided to shit the bed in the playoffs.

It happens, but with Ben we will back back again and again competing for titles. We were 12-4 last year and one defensive lapse from winning the #2 seed.

Shoe-in for HOF?

If his career ended today, because that is all he has….good chance, probably, but shoe-in? he needs to complete the resume

With Ben...

what I hope the next OC and QB coach can get Ben to do is throw the ball away sometimes. I know people are going to say “but he makes plays out of nothing”, and you are correct in that assessment, but Ben lives too much by that code, there has to be some smarts included here.

Review the play when he hurt his nakle against Cleveland…it was a totally unnecessary injury…plain and simple he should have thrown that ball away. He needs to make better decisions in situations like that. He scramble right and saw nothing was on and then tried to scramble back left again and got his leg caught in a human vice of 630lbs of Cleveland DL.

The dude is tough as nails and I love him for it but sometimes he has to be smarter and I know we can say that on many occasions with Ben on and off the field. Cols714 mentioned all the QBs we had prior to Ben and he is correct but he has HOF talent that isn’t being achieved even with a BA more wide open passing O.

Reel him in and re-teach him a bit…defenders have had to re-learn how to tackle why not Ben.

by ColinP on Jan 27, 2012 12:09 PM EST reply actions

at the very least

getting him to throw it away instead of taking a sack and forcing us out of FG range would be a good start. Situational football was always a weak point with Arians, and that weakness showed up on the field. Ben is great, but no QB should be above getting reprimanded when he takes a sack and it costs the team points.

by lkwdsteel on Jan 27, 2012 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

From PittPostGaz
Rooney also said during a wide-ranging interview that the Steelers need to cut down on sacks and that Roethlisberger needs to “tweak” his game.

“From what I understood from that was, just not get hit to so much," said Roethlisberger, who was sacked 40 times in 15 regular-season games in 2011. “I think some of that’s on me; some of that’s on linemen. It’s on everybody, so I’ll put it on me and try to make those adjustments.”

Draft OL , and I’m open to some coaching

Ben and Arians are friends. And have a pretty impressive record together.

He will move on I’m sure, but in the wake of a friend getting basically fired, you extend your sympathies, say you wish it hadn’t happened, that you don’t agree with the decision to fire him, then you move on. That’s all that is happening here. Ben hasn’t said anything nasty about the Rooneys, he only said that he doesn’t like that his friend got fired. There’s absolutely nothing in the world wrong with that. The Rooneys are big enough to understand that (Unlike Colts owner Jim Irsay after Peyton Manning said similar things toward Bill Polian and Jim Caldwell) we should be too.

by furthur56 on Jan 27, 2012 11:08 PM EST reply actions

Would you be happier with Ben if he threw Arians under the bus?

How would you like to be Ben’s friend if after the moment you got fired or released he’s there talking trash about you? I think people are a little blind to the human aspect of this story or are blind because this is about BA. What if it wasn’t the hated Offensive Coordinator, but instead an Offensive Lineman? Let’s say it was a Left Tackle who was Ben’s friend, but he was a little overweight coming into training camp after recuperating from surgery and the FO cut him because of it. Would you say Ben needs to “be put back in his place” for expressing sympathy or saying that he didn’t agree with the decision? No, you’d understand that though the cut was justified, Ben was doing nothing more than being a good friend and teammate. It’s no different with BA than it was with Max Starks, except the fans didn’t have a blind hatred of Max Starks.

by furthur56 on Jan 27, 2012 11:36 PM EST reply actions

Ben should have just had his meeting with the Rooneys and not publicized it.

Nothing wrong with a QB wanting to know more about a new offensive direction. In fact, you’d be concerned if Ben didn’t want to know more about the FO’s thinking. But telling the media about this gives the impression that Ben thinks he’s running the football team or that he intends to go into Rooney’s office with a chip on his shoulder. Ben should realize that nobody can compromise his natural talents as an NFL QB. But the Steelers rightfully are looking for an OC who can help Ben and the entire offense improve their production. In the process, they might also succeed in extending Ben’s NFL career.

by Billy52 on Jan 28, 2012 9:55 AM EST reply actions

He didn't "publicize" anything.

Coach says the OC is coming back and then he “retires” and then somebody puts a Mic in Ben’s face and asks him a question.

Tweak (make small adjustments too)

BB has always held the ball longer than any other QB and he has made some huge plays becaue of it. However, he needs to get a better at knowing when to say when. For instance:

1. I am probably wrong but on the # but it seems like 5-7 times this year he took a sack that took us out of FG range. That is a tweak in has game that needs to be made. If it is 3rd down near mid field. Try to make soemthing happen even with a sack you can still pin the other team deep with a decent punt.

2. Throwing some quick passes also slows down an agressive pass rush. We should try it more often. So do draws, screens, and shovel passes which we never run (don’t bing up the Hines Ward -3yds against cleveland as that may have been our only shovel pass all year).

3. Is our O-line really that bad at protecting Ben? In 2006 our staring O-line was if I remember and I am not sure of injuries (Marvel Smith, Faneca, Hartings, K. Simmons, and M. Smith). Ben was sacked 46 times that year in 15 games. Then maybe the 2011 version of our make shift line was not that bad. Don’t get me wrong could be much better but not the only area improvement is needed.

Actually, from the stats I looke at this year Ben was sacked on 7.2% of the pass plays run by the Steelers. That is the lowest % of his career.

Again, our O-line needs to get better and hopefully not be ravaged by injuries. However, a new OC and BB working together can tweak the offense, right the ship, and make the 2012 offense top 10.

I'm glad its not just me.

I couldn’t agree more. Ben is still growing up! The good part in all of this is our team is getting more younger and more talented. Ben will be all right. I hope the new O. C. doesn’t clash with Ben. I just want them to get along and help Ben mature into this game a little bit more. I don’t think its a matter of talent. Its a matter of understanding the game and the role he needs to play with the talent he has.

Ben should have input in how the offense is run....

He is a top tier qb who has had success. I think there is needed balance in BBs approach to the game. Too many hits and sack, drives that could be extended simply by checking down. The coach and the OC have to be able to have that conversation and enforce those principles.
I don’t know why no one has asked where coach Tomlin has been in the process of trying to reign in BB?

I hope they invest in an oline as BB is 30 and is in my opinion in danger of morphing into Marc Bulger.

Impose your will.

by ALDOG on Jan 29, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions

I don't understand this

All he’s asking for is to have Mr. Rooney explain his vision for the offense and what Ben needs to work on. If that is so bad, then there are a lot of QBs throughout the history of the NFL that needed to be put in their place.

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer

If Ben doesn't understand...

…that he can’t ask that question NOW of ownership, BEFORE it has completed the hiring process for a new OC (thereby avoiding the new guy being put before a fait accompli as far as offensive philosophy is concerned), then perhaps he’s not ready to be considered, as PaVaSteeler suggests, as a “partner of the team”. The Rooneys cannot put themselves out of the running for bright, innovative young minds by expressing prematurely their desires, thereby painting themselves in a philosophical corner.

by Flying Polamalus on Jan 30, 2012 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree...

…now IS the time for Ben to ask these questions, and to be involved. The Rooneys made a $102 MILLION investment in Ben; you don’t think they won’t want his viewpoints, his opinions, on where the offense is, where it is going, where it can go?

Just by letting Ben express himself does not mean they take what he says verbatim, that they cater to his opinion and desires, but if I’m paying someone that kind of money, I do want to hear what he has to say, before I make any kind of decision.

Ben has to trust that the Rooneys know what they are doing; just as the Rooneys have to assume Ben will be on board with whatever decision they make. That doesn’t mean you ignore the opportunity to avoid pitfalls, mis-understandings, or worse, by ignoring each other just because of the title after your name. Inclusion is a very powerful management tool; exclusion is a very powerful management killer.

you assholes need to quit beating on big ben.he is the reason we are twelve and four,,also he is the reason we have two more rings and are in contention every year,he is the reason that he will break every bradshaw record so quit being a dick ,the man is a top qb ,and we should be a pass first team because he has the tools to do it,sure we have a great defense and players, though without ben we wouldnt have the complete team.get a fuckin life
