BTSC Steelers Six Pack: NFL Playoffs Countdown Edition
IX - I suppose unsurprisingly, Dick LeBeau is not changing his defensive schemes to account for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos' unique style of offense. Brett Keisel explained the philosophy:
"We’ve been a solid defense around here for a long time," defensive end Brett Keisel said. "Regardless of who we’re playing, we understand what we’re capable of as a defense. If we all just do our job, we’re pretty good."
X - Though Mike Tomlin insists that Ben Roethlisberger is in no worse shape than he was a week ago, it's a bit disconcerting to hear that Ben Roethlisberger 'tweaked' his ankle during last Sunday's Week 17 win over the Cleveland Browns. I think that's why our own Anthony Defeo characterized Big Ben's injury status last week as a 'no-win' situation
XIII - Damon Hack at SI.com previews the Steelers-Broncos game with three keys to the game and a final score prediction.
XIV - There is one player on Denver's roster that I think can help swing the game in their favor if the Steelers play sloppy and keep Denver hanging around into the fourth quarter. That would be place kicker Matt Prater, who was just named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month in December.
XL - The Broncos' dynamic pass-rushing duo of Elvis Dumervill and Von Miller has been slowed in recent weeks as a result of injuries and just the natural wear-and-tear of a long NFL season. But it's still a formidable test for Max Starks and particularly right tackle Marcus Gilbert. The rookie out of Florida joined 93.7 The Fan on Thursday to talk about his first playoff game coming up this Sunday in Denver.
XLIII - Though non-football related, some of you I know are video game aficionados and avid players, so a heads up that the parent company behind SB Nation (Vox Media) announced it will be launching a site dedicated to gaming coverage featuring an all-start cast of editors and journalists.

Nice preview.
Dad wont change his style but dont look for them to blitz … i would think they may send one extra at most to flush tebow out. if you paly alot of zone you might get 2-4 pix out of tebow.
As far as Ben is concerned the whole team is banged up and needs 2 weeks to rest….er no. We will play with what wweve got and hopefully BA does not insist on empty sets that expose the QB and allow the defense to play up tight with safeties over the top. That is a recipe for disaster. In my opinion. I am hoping to see more bunch formation and pony back feild perhaps. The x factor and I agree with you is the special teams- if we win the feild of position we win the game easily.
Impose your will.
LeBeau isn't stupid
I’d be shocked if we didn’t adjust the defense a bit to account for Tebow’s running. He just isn’t going to go tell the Broncos what he did so they can prepare for it.

LeBeau and Ben
Not saying that LeBeau should change anything significantly in his approach, but Tebow is much more likely to hurt us with his legs than with his arm. We’d better have some folks shadowing him. Seneca Wallace gave us a little dose of a running QB last week.
Regarding Ben’s ankle, it’s pretty obvious that he isn’t anywhere close to 100% yet, even without the recent “tweak.” This team’s fortunes in the playoffs are riding mainly on Ben’s incredible toughness and resiliency despite the bum ankle. I think they’d suit him up even with one wooden leg.
Didn’t the Chiefs have a few linebackers play spy and just wait for Tebow to do something? His stat-line for the game was 6 attempts (at running) for 16 yards. Assuming the LBs did sit back and wait, it seemed to have worked.

Concern
I am a little concerned about this game. This game means everything to the Broncos and it seems like the Steelers already have Baltimore in the back of their minds. The media has basically said there’s “no way” Denver wins this game, and that downright scares me. A Tebow win would justify Tebow’s legitimacy as an NFL quarterback. If the Steelers come out flat or look past the Broncos, it could spell disaster. This has all the makings of a trap game. Given the fact that we’ve lacked the “killer instinct” to put weak teams away, and instead let them hang around until the end; I really hope this isn’t another nail-biter all the way down to the last whistle.

Agreed
I’m concerned as well. If the Steelers were healthy, they should win convincingly over Denver, but the amount of injuries is troubling. I don’t feel the club will be overconfident heading into this game, but the reduced offensive output is a concern.
I agree about the need to put away inferior teams, but this could be a close, low scoring game entering the fourth quarter. We know Denver has a tremendous kicker, so the Steelers don’t want this to come down to a three point game.
Prediction: Steelers 14, Denver 3
Tend to agree
The Steelers are built perfectly to counter what the Broncos do best, but on the road, in the playoffs, trap games do exist.
Fortunately, they are a very veteran team, and won’t get drawn into a close 4th quarter game- if the Donkeys get lucky early on, expect the Steelers to come storming back.
I predict at least two interceptions by the Steeler D.

A Healthy Steelers
would be the number one seed and most likely headed to the Super Bowl. The road is much harder, but it will be all the more sweet. I just hope that Ben’s injury progresses each week. The Defense looks to be healthier than all season if we make it to the Divisional round.
even with the health issues
the Steelers would be 13-3 and the No. 1 seed if they’d of just been able to hold on in that second Raven game, before the health issues. health certainly played a role in the SF loss. On paper, when healthy, this team coulda/shoulda been a 14-2, 15-1 team. My take is that Ben is mobile enough to not be a sitting duck. He can’t scramble, but he can avoid and extend plays to an extent, which I thought he did against Cleveland Sunday.
All things considered, I still like our chances.
C’mon Sunday! GO STEELERS!!!

A little worried too.
Tebow may not be a very good NFL quarterback right now, but he’s not nearly as bad as he’s played the past two weeks, either. We’re travelling to Mile High, won’t have Ryan Clark, and many of our best players who are going to be playing Sunday are not very healthy at all.
I’m hoping first and second downs are always running plays for the Broncos this week. That has been their downfall, forcing an inexperienced, mediocre passer to throw only on third downs. There is no way they will ever get into a rhythm in the passing game, and that will be big-time advantage: us. If, instead, Fox decides to test our gimpy defense, they may find enough success to move the ball and keep the game close.
Good thoughts
Word is that’s what they’re planning on doing. I heard Elway told Tebow to open it up and sling it. That might just result in more interceptions, but the Broncos offense will need to have at least a semblance of balance if they’re going to do more than pray that their defense wins it for them.
Extrapolate
On what information you have that Pittsburgh has the Ravens in their sights and are overlooking the Broncos.
There is none. You’re making that up in your head, and putting it down in the comments section. I’d rather you either write the things you’ve seen or heard that lead you to believe this, or just be more sensible and say, “Gosh, I’ve seen it happen in sports before where a team overlooks a weaker opponent and gets beat…I sure hope that doesn’t happen to us!”

Big Ben
Here’s hoping that we take a huge lead and that Ben can rest in the 4th. After seing Ben’s limited mobility and effectiveness last week I thought we were doing the wrong thing playing him.
For one thing, Charlie Batch is better than wobbly Ben, and most importantly, the risk of losing Ben was too big for whatever perceived advantage there was in playing him. We didn’t lose him per se, but we certainly did not help his recovery. Remember when we had that huge scare a few years back in the Browns game when he was carted off in a meaningless game? There was a lesson there, Tomlin didn’t heed it. Ben should have been taken off when the game was lost in SF, when the game was won against St-Louis and, if he wasn’t going to be healthier against the Browns, let Charile win it for you.
Had he rested I would have felt much better about our chances moving forward. Now, I really hope we can somehow pull this off, but if Ben continues to play as he did while injured, we’ll be lucky to get to the next round.
Dick, what would Woody (Hayes) say to you now: "He'd say, 'LeBeau, get your hair cut.'"
We can doit
Yes its true that the media is saying denver cant doit but….remember, this team was old and slow. They have painted themselves into a corner to a certain extent regarding an offensive line that seems to be plagued by injuries the past 5 years. None the less it can be an advantage for us- if the steelers make this an us against the world then we will see a team that is focused and determined to impose their will. It boils down to whether the offense can produce in my opinion 2-3 sustained scoring drives that nets 13-17 points. If wew get that we will win. Hopefully the offseason after we win the super bow will allow us to focus on O line help to preserve bens longevity- that is what I am most concerned about!
Impose your will.
Keys
To me, the real key to this game is turnovers. Both offenses are turnover prone, but Tebow has been a turnover machine as late. Denver needs turnovers to get great field position and kick a long FG, and they can’t afford to give a legitimate offense like Pittsburgh’s any help by putting us in good field position.
The only way this game is close is if the Steelers have multiple turnovers.
the standard is the standard
I have been a Pittsburgh Steelers fan for over 37 years and i think people quickly forget that they could have played in 4-5 more super bowls had it not been for epic collapses in the playoffs. Remember when we were driving late in the AFC championship game against the Chargers. We were almost double digits favorites and Neal Odonnel choked near the goal line and we lost. What about the year we went 14-2 with Kordell Stewart we had the best defense in the league only to flame out in the playoffs. Then in Big Bens first year we played New England and instead of going for it to make it a one score game. coach Cower elected to kick a field goal with us behind 31-17. Had we have went for it we would have close the game to within 7. Instead we were down 10 and ended up scoring a late touchdown that could have sent it into overtime had Cower went for it. Those are just 3 occasions when we could have won. I am very thankful to be a Steeler fan and i have enjoyed some heartbreaks and a lot of cheers. But one thing is certain with Pittsburgh more than any other team in the NFL the Steelers win games. That is what they do. Its been that way since the 70’s even when they have had less than stellar quarterbacks and a suspect secondary. The Steelers do more with less talent than i have ever seen. Year after Year they get a steal in the last rounds of the draft and he becomes great player. The Steelers have the best organization in football and could have very well played in 10-12 super bowls over the last 40 years. One thing is certain with only 3 head coaches in 40 plus years they have the greatest stability in all of pro sports and i think this is a big reason why they are so successful they are truly a family and the Rooneys have an atmosphere that breeds success. It does not matter who is hurt or who is healthy. Whoever puts on that Steeler uniform always does it with pride and rises to the occasion when called to duty. The Steelers are a very dangerous team this year because everybody is talking about how many injuries they have. The Standard is the Standard no matter who plays on Sunday they will rise to the occasion and play with pride win or lose. I am a steeler fan for life and i am a true fan. I have survived the Mark Malone and Bubby Brister years when the Steelers had great defense and no offense and people forget that both quarterbacks lead their teams to the AFC playoffs. Ande they were not very good quarterbacks. And Neil Odonnell and Kordell Stewart as well as rookie Big Ben took the Steelers to AFC championship games. Don’t be surprised if the Steelers dont will themselves to another Super Bowl. It all starts in Denver on Sunday. We expect to win and should win. Remember The Standard is the Standard!!!
