Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey To Miss Another Playoff Game
Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey will miss his second consecutive playoff game when he doesn't suit up against Denver in the AFC Wild Card round playoffs Sunday.
He had a high ankle sprain to the same ankle that kept him out of Super Bowl XLV.
Doug Legursky will start his second consecutive playoff game in replacement of Pouncey. Chris Kemoeatu will replace Legursky at left guard.
This comes in wake of news that Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson was burned in a house fire early Friday morning. He will not be at Sunday's game. It was announced earlier this week FS Ryan Clark will miss the game as well.
Down three key starters (RB Rashard Mendenhall was placed on injured reserve this week), the Steelers will enter the game with QB Ben Roethlisberger hampered by an injury as well. No word on whether anyone else related to the Steelers organization was injured this week, but there is still a few hours left in the day.

Really wishing Ben and Pouncey had both been sitting the last few weeks...

Amen!
I really hope Tomlin changes the way he dishes out playing time based on the way he’s screwed this up!
Come on
If Baltimore lost and both Ben and Pouncy had been sitting, we probably would have lost and then you would say Tomlin screwed that up too. It was a calulated risk and I think most people would have done the same thing. If you can get the No 1 or 2 seed it is way worth it.
have to agree with you
There was no reason to have played Big Ben and Pouncey and now the steelers will pay for that in the playoffs. Tomlin needs to be a coach and sit Ben the last couple weeks looking to go deep into the playoffs. They will struggle to beat the Broncos sunday and then get embarassed against the Cheetriots or Raisins. Good run this year, but the injuries and the way it has played out will cost the team in the playoffs.
Second that.
To me, Pouncey was one of the biggest reasons the Steelers lost last year’s title game. You can add Troy, Harrison and Mendenhall to that list of starters that should not have taken the field last week. Tomlin took the chance with Ben against the 49ers and it didn’t work out. That should have been it. Rest till playoffs knowing you are going to play 3 games, the first of which is a team that appear like cupcakes when your own team is healthy. No way Baltimore was going to loose against the Bengals. I love the Steelers but playing on wounded knees or ankles makes this a one and done playoff team and I’m a little pissed about it.
geesh guys
My condolences go out to Coach Wilson and his family.
Missing starters isn’t fun – here is the latest injury report for the game:
Best of luck to both teams this weekend! I think this game is going to be a lot closer with the injuries you guys have than what is predicted.

How big
is the loss of Spencer Larson? I’ve heard he’s a lead blocker on a lot of Tebow’s option runs and good special teamer.
Spence is just an average FB
However we have used him in the screen game – its not a huge loss. Dawkins is a much bigger loss, and Kuper probably our biggest, although Hochstein isn’t a slouch.

Aww shucks....
Get Well #53!! We need you to protect Ben, directly and indirectly (by keeping Kemo off the field as well)…..
"Leave the gun. Bring the Canolis."
It's all about depth and luck
In the NFL, you need a strong second unit to cover for the inevitably injured players. You also need luck—losing a starting left tackle is one thing, but losing your QB means the season is over.
Not sure Ben has what it takes this year. Until Pouncey got hurt, the O-line actually looked better than last year’s group (which isn’t surprising). The defense looks stronger against the pass, though with some unpredictability against the run. The running game looks the same this year as it did in ’10 and ’08: unreliable.
The Denver game should be a close one, but even if the Steelers make it over this first hurdle, I think they’re out in the divisionals. I think it’s Baltimore’s year, if Flacco doesn’t screw it up. But then again, they might not get as many favorable calls to bail out their sketchy passing game (there was a Yahoo article about this yesterday).
Hate to be looking ahead with a pessimist’s view, but I look forward to finally fielding a solid O-line next year. The young players gained some valuable experience this year at wide receiver, on the D-line, and in the linebacker corps, so I see ALL UNITS being strong next year. Number SEVEN in 2012-13….
For the first time in a long time, I see the AFC playoffs being less daunting than the Super Bowl will be. I think all six teams in the AFC playoffs have pretty obvious flaws, and I could see any of them beating any of the others, to be honest.
We’ve seen the Ravens play less-than-stellar football a few times the last few weeks. The Patriots didn’t beat any of the good teams they played. The Steelers are calling Jeff Hartings and asking him to suit up next week.
Hell, someone call Dermontti Dawson....please!

seriously re: AFC-NFC
my work buddy-Giants fan has been saying the NFL is on it’s head, in terms of the conferences. betting the NFC takes the Lombardi trophy again this year. hell, the Giants seem to have a good shot at this point, given what they’ve overcome this season….
The one team the Packers don't want to play
Is the Giants. I think they beat every team but them. Best combination of QB/WR outside Green Bay in the NFC. Cruz and Nicks are total studs. Green Bay can’t keep up with them.
Not to mention that other Giant whose playing lights out...
…Jason Pierre Paul.

I couldn't agree more
with all of your comments!
Honestly
You guys shoulda rested Berger’ and Pouncey.
That being said i think it still comes to be a 24-9 game.

Indeed I do.

Guys, I hate to break it to everybody, but it was the right thing to do. We barely won that Cleveland game with Ben and pouncey so if Tomlin didnt play them and we would’ve lost and Baltimore lost, it would’ve been people calling for Tomlins head because we lost out on the division title and a first round bye.

Everyone always knows the “right thing to do” after the fact. If you’re saying the right thing to do was to play two of the most important people on our team, then you are dead right sir.

We were 6th seed regardless of win or loss, they should have been sat for the playoffs.

Foresight ought not be blind
It’s not like this came out of nowhere. I suggested early last week that we should’ve started Batch against Cleveland. If he struggled (unlikely really) we could pull him for Roethlisberger at any point and no harm done, or if the Ravens have a commanding lead leave him in. If he does well, then Ben gets to rest. It really would’ve been that easy.
I’m sure Tomlin and co. expected the Ravens to win and decided to get Ben some practice and get him back into a rhythm, which is quite important. Had Ben sat against the Browns, I think it would have actually been worse on him (Ben).
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
Yet
Roethlisberger ended up throwing 40 passes after being put on a 20-25 snap count by Tomlin before the game. I agree that some reps are good to avoid rust, but he didn’t need all 60 minutes and all 40 att.
It’s fully possible he didn’t have a setback, and he’s just saying it to give the Broncos something to think about.
I can’t confirm this, but I don’t recall a playoff game Ben’s played in where he didn’t talk about an injury he had the week before it.

No. . .he is right. . .
they should have been rested with the bigger prize in mind. . .hopefully MT will learn from this experieince!
yep
And thanks to Tomlin that didnt happen. Tomlin just said in a news conference he isnt letting Ryan Clark play becuase he isnt going to risk someones health and further injury. No doubt that sickle cell is serious and its complicated, but Clark and his doctors supposibly had a game plan for the game. I agree with not letting Clark play, but I also agree to Tomlins point of not risking further injury, SO Dont let Ben Play or Pouncey, Hence, further injury which has happened.
I think that before you go crucifying a guy with MUCH more intimate knowledge of the situation than yourself , you should at least try to understand the type of injury. I assure you, Tomlin, and the doctors know A LOT more than either of us.

I’m sure you can cook up some reason that your response was valid. However, I’m more inclined to just think you realize what you said was pretty dumb, and that’s the best you could come up with in your defense. It’s all good bro. Every person on their couch thinks they know more than people with…what’s it called….actual knowledge of the situation.

I didn't follow Pouncey in college
Does he have a history of injuries or specifically leg injuries? I hate to say it, but I’m beginning to worry about him being able to hold up. The guy is such a ridiculous talent but, it just seems that injuries keep nagging him. I may just be overreacting.
I agree
Pouncey seems to have ankle issues. Is the ankle he hurt this season the same one as the last season?…like a bum ankle situation? Really bad high ankle sprains can compromise one’s ankle in the long term in some cases, the ligaments just get so jacked up in some cases. And if I remember correctly Pouncey suffered a pretty bad one last year.
Yep, I know we've already fast tracked him to the HOF and hung his jersey in the rafters
but dude is looking fragile right now.

I will say this - he'd better get some outside opinions this offseason
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing with something that needs surgery that the team is missing. It wouldn’t be intentional of course, but doctors are fallible. He just seems like this leg has remained an on and off problem since last year’s AFCC.
No. . .you're not. . .
he’s missed 2 of 4 postseason games in a two year career so far. . .can it be changed??? I hope so but for right now, I’d say you fears are valid!
The $64,000 question
How many quality players and coaches can the Steelers lose and still prevail over the Broncos?
Are the Broncos really that bad or incompetent on offense? After all they are the #1 rushing offense in the NFL.
Will the Broncos defense without Brian Dawkins be unable to stop the Steelers offense?
Ben Hogan who heretofore had won 9 golf majors lost the 1955 US Open in a playoff to assistant golf pro Jack Fleck. It is considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history.
Do the Broncos really have no chance against the Steelers on Sunday playing on their home turf? I wonder.
I like your enthusiasm
Just worried this is the moment this season when the ’lers finally drop one to a completely unworthy team….
-worried in washington
The answer is...
The Steelers can lose everyone except Redman and still be guaranteed victory, because it’s REDMAN.
Also, the Chiefs had the #1 rushing offense in the league, home field advantage, and a sense of destiny when they hosted the Ravens last year. I live near KC, and nobody mentions that game, not even the critics. Nobody wants to remember that kind of humiliation.
Last year’s Chiefs were a better team than this year’s Broncos. Charles was a homerun threat at runningback and Matt Cassell was effective and efficient. A stingy defense led by a good aggressive secondary and scary pass rush from Tamba Hali completed the picture. They were utterly dominated by a Ravens team that was in turn dominated by the Steelers after the Steelers had spotted them a couple TD’s.
The Broncos have a good veteran RB and a gimmicky option thing that took the league a while to figure out. They have a good solid defense with veteran DB’s (one of whom will be out Sunday) and good pass rush from Dumervil and Miller. Their QB has literally gone an entire half without completing a pass, and has a QB rating of 52.0 over his last 4 games.
No chance at all. . .
I’m just trying to cope with the fact that the AFC is not very daunting this year and we will probably end our bid next week b/c we are just to banged up. . .plain and simple!
The more important question is
is Jack Fleck still alive? And if so, can Jack Fleck suit up and play the Center position or be a decent back-up Safety or Running Back (or fill-in as Coach) for this game. That’s what I’d like to know…
We might get to see some Brady Quinn
He was seen practicing few snaps with the first team.
"He had no teeth, and he was slobbering all over himself. I'm thinking, 'You can have your money back, just get me out of here. Let me go be an accountant." I can't tell you how badly I wanted out of there."
- Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
Please have Ben drinking gatorade
and suited up only if we need him this game. I’m for making sure we win this one of course, but I have a bad feeling that even if we win that Kemo will ensure that Roethlisberger isn’t available next week when we’ll really need him.
No.
You play to win and going into Denver and facing a team with nothing to lose might not be such an easy task. Resting your best player who is available and ready to play is foolish.
"If you havin' dragon problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 arrows but my knee took one."
Yeah,
but just how ready is he. . .he’s already proven that he can gut out a win but what do you think he/this team will look like if that have to play the ratbirds like this??
Well, for what it's worth, they said on the radio that the combination they will be starting on the o-line is 4-0 so far this season.
Awesome

Can the past 5 years...
Be just a coincidence?
Is it me or does it seem that the offense as well as the rest of the team has had a rash of injuries over this period.? Is it a conditioning thing or just injury prone players that we seem to have?
Impose your will.
