BTSC Steelers Six Pack: Two Days Till Title Run Begins Edition
IX - No need to link to the TV Distribution Map this week, as all four wild card round games are broadcast to the entire country on network television. So instead, here's the official injury and status reports for both the Steelers and the Broncos. The two squads meet Sunday afternoon in Denver to conclude the opening weekend of the 2011 NFL Playoffs.
X - Great piece about Isaac Redman on Yahoo! today titled 'Isaac Redman's faced tougher tests than the Denver Broncos.' Lots of tidbits in there I had no idea about, including Redman's upbringing, why he wound up at Bowie State, why Mike Tomlin gave him a particular nickname, to name but a few. Good stuff. Quite the opportunity for Redman this weekend.
XIII - John Fox, like so many coaches around the NFL, got his start in the National Football League under Chuck Noll. Fox was a defensive backs coach from 1989-1991 after a successful stint as a defensive coach at the University of Pittsburgh from '86-'88. Anyway, on Thursday, Fox joined 102.3 The Ticket in Denver (link to transcription) to talk about the Broncos' upcoming wild card matchup with the Steelers. In addition to commenting on Noll and the Rooneys, Fox answered questions about Sunday's game. One noteworthy comment concerned how the Broncos would not try to throw the ball much against Pittsburgh's defense. Obviously his words to the media should be taken with a beach's worth of salt, but I bring it up to ask you whether you think Denver will try to throw on the Steelers' depleted secondary. I kind of think they will, at least early in the game in an attempt to strike first and get the Steelers on their heels a bit.
XIV - Jerricho Cotchery commented on Santonio Holmes during an interview on WFAN in New York on Thursday. In the interview, Cotchery said that Holmes was a well-respected, hard-working teammate during his first season in New York last year. Apparently though something changed in year two, as Holmes was called out by his teammates during the Jets' late-season collapse. Cotchery, of course, also fielded questions about his role with the Steelers and the playoff tilt with Denver this weekend.
XL - Sticking with the interview theme, Maurkice Pouncey didn't appreciate all the Tim Tebow questions asked of him during his Friday interview on The Fan. The second-year center, who was named a first team All Pro for the second time in as many seasons, will unfortunately not get to take his frustration out on the Broncos this weekend, as he's been ruled out with a nagging ankle injury. On the other side of the matchup, Erick Dekker, who's been Tebow's favorite target this season, also joined The Fan this week to talk about backing into the playoffs and squaring off against the mighty Steelers in round one.
XLIII - Dale Lolley recaps the week's news and makes his prediction for Sunday's game in his latest Friday blog post.

Steelers 23-3. Redmans’ legend grows.
I'd sooner get Flacco'd out here in the middle of nowhere than lose face in front of my friends and family.

Thanx 4 the Jerricho interview link!
I luved the guys humility & his refusal 2 b baited n2 saying somthin negative about his 4mer teamates. I was also particularly glad 2 hear his appraisal of the broncos & his warning about what happens 2 teams that com n2 denver underestimating what the broncos r capable of. Listening 2 him speak, i can better understand y the Steelers wanted him 2b a part of our organization.
I hv 2 admit, thou, n all honesty, i get worried when we r as heavily favored (virtually every1 is picking us 2 win) as we r 4 this game. i jus hope it doesn’t backfire (& i hope the Steelers aren’t reading the same sites i am).
when u can bring urself 2b grateful 4 ur problems u`ll begin 2 harvest their positive value. life is difficult; but out of that difficulty can grow meaning & beauty, f u r open 2 it. n each disappointment is the seed of fulfillment. learn what it has 2 teach & u`ll b moving urself 4ward.
The more you sweat in training, the less you'll bleed in battle.
Cotchery is a class act....
Notice how the volunteered in the interview that money was not the determining factor why he came to Pittsburgh when other teams – teams not as deep at WR – wanted his services. And how the repeatedly spoke of the family atmosphere of the organization. And how the refused to rise to the bait when the WFAN guys asked his about signing with the Jets next year.
There is no question that Jerricho is keeping his options open, just in case. But there is also no question that he will leave money on the table to stay in Pittsburgh. He is a highly principled man, and he is in the enviable position of choosing his employer. If possible, he will choose a highly principled owner and team.
Listen to the interview, and pay attention to the things he says. And notice the things he doesn’t say…..
I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

I was thinking about Jerricho along these lines from other snippets I’ve read and heard over the past months. This cements my feeling that, if the Steelers want him, he’ll be back next year.

Both Tim Tebow and John Elway got their first post season starts against the Steelers
and both in their 2nd season.
Ironic huh?
More ironic, Tebow was born on the date (obviously different year) the Broncos organization was established

interesting
but, besides Elway being a QB and Tebow being a quasi-QB, that is pretty much where the similarities end.

not sure where you're headed with this
but you’re leaving out the part where the Steelers went to Mile High and beat the Broncd’ohs in Elway’s 2nd season. I’m all for this irony continuing.
I’m really glad you guys got Tebow. You’re an AFC foe and hopefully you’ll spend several years before you figure out that guy is never going to lead you to the promised land. He’s like Denver’s version of Kordell Stewart. The only way it could be better if he’d gone to one of our AFC North rivals, or Dallas.

the big difference being Kordell could throw a football

Max Starks
Another good biographical piece of sorts was written by Scott Brown of the Trib about Max Starks (my classmate). I never saw his name mentioned in the team MVP discussion, and I’d forgotten about him too, but what do you think the Steelers record would be if he hadn’t been brought in?

I
don’t want to think about this season without Max Starks at LT. Jonathan Scott’s “performance” in Indianapolis was enough for me.

I love Max Starks
it was sad to see the team drop him, but is really was understandable . I hope the two can reach a deal coming up for at least 3 years

I'll be honest
I’d rather play any team instead of the Broncos. That’s right, Ravens, Patriots, Bengals or the Texans.
Don’t get me wrong, the Broncs are easily the worse team in the playoffs, but that’s just what makes me nervous. The Steelers often play down to their weaker opponents and off all the teams, this one is built to beat the Steelers if they have a down game.
Just color me nervous about tomorrow.

My feeling
A close-ish game on the scoreboard, but really dominated on the field by the Steelers. Something like 17-6. If there was ever a team the Steelers ought to ring up another 27-0 performance on, though, it would be the Broncos.
Remember
The Chiefs vs. Ravens game last year. That game and this one have a lot in common, an AFC West team with the #1 running offense and feeling of destiny against a balanced hard-nosed AFC North opponent. The biggest difference is that those Chiefs were better than this year’s Broncos (they had a quarterback, their running game was more explosive, and I think their defense was better). The Chiefs were epically manhandled, and there’s a good chance the Broncos will too.
Thanks for the link to the Redman story.
After I watched his highlight video from Bowie State, I had no doubt that he would eventually crack the Steelers’ starting lineup. As we saw last Sunday, though, in the NFL there are a lot more guys who can take the ball away from you or knock it out. I think the more Isaac plays, the better he’ll get at protecting the ball.
The magic of the Rooneys continues...
…I can’t help but see similarities in the Redman story to that of Ernie Holmes. The way Mr. Harrison looked beyond the obvious, and got into the details of Redman’s situation is reminiscent of how the Rooneys looked into Holmes’ criminal charges for shooting at truckers and eventually, the state police. The Rooneys put their reputation on the line, took responsibility for Holmes, saw to it he received the mental health care he needed, and put their faith in the character of a troubled man.
Sounds like this Mr. Harrison did the same thing with Redman; how appropo then that Redman ends up with the Steelers.
