Wild Card Game Open Thread: Cincinnati at Houston
The Bengals are up 7-0 after RB Cedric Benson scored from a yard out.
More importantly, the North Dakota State Bison defeated Sam Houston State 17-6 to capture the school's first FCS National Championship. Pretty impressive for the Fargo-based school that has only had Division I affiliation since 2003 (when a certain editor-in-chief of the school's newspaper wrote 1,000 words in support of the move, calling for a national championship within 10 years).
Yes, it's patently obvious I'm just filling up space right now. So once again, NDSU, 2011 FCS National Champions.
If you want to stop in and say congratulations, or even just comment on a game that already has a ton of big plays (and dubious penalties), feel free to do so.
We can even get into Pittsburgh's first Wild Card round game since 2007. The team (what's left of it) is in Denver preparing for tomorrow's 4:15 p.m. kickoff.
It's a rich tapestry of activity here today, so let's get to it.

Is there a playoff scenario where the Steelers can get a rematch with Houston?
Because that would be a two-fold plus for me: the Bungles getting bounced and the Steelers bouncing the Texans…

Involved but doable!
Thanks!

I could see any match-up happening this year. I’d be most surprised to see Denver move to the AFCG, but I could see every other team doing it.
True.
I haven’t looked, but after the Broncos finished the season with a 3 game losing streak I wonder what Vegas says are Denver’s odds for making the Super Bowl…

GD it, I love Arian Foster. Just such a great pure runner.
What ticks me off is everyone who denies Emmitt Smith his due as one of the best ever, but they all love Foster. They are so similar, it’s scary. Great vision, great balance, they don’t break long runs, but they get more 6-10 yard carries than anyone else.
Haters gonna hate.

Neal, I saw your comment about the Bison. Congrats. I have watched a couple games of these playoffs, and from the looks of it, Sam Houston looked unbeatable. (really the only team I saw more than once) But your boys pulled it off. Nice!

The NFL equivalent of what NDSU’s defense did to the top-ranked Bearkats of Sam Houston State would be like the Steelers giving up one drive of 40+ yards and two field goals to the Patriots or Packers.
I’ve never seen a front seven dominate their opponents so badly in a championship game.
The defensive coordinator, Scotty Hazelton, married my assistant editor from my school newspaper days. He’s getting another job somewhere big, guaranteed. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Chicago Bears give him a look, their LBs coach (Bob Babich) used to be NDSU’s head coach. Babich hired Hazelton in 2001.
Congrats
I follow Lehigh football since my mom teaches there and ND State completely smothered them one week after they put up 50 against Towson.

Yeah, didn’t Lehigh’s receiver wig out on Twitter and get suspended or something?
NDSU steamrolled Lehigh, either way. I went to Fargo for that one.
Yeah, their best offensive player retweeted a friend's tweet that had a questionable word in it
It was kind of an overreaction on the part of the Lehigh AD if you ask me, but that school’s always been hyper sensitive about political correctness.

Honestly, if Houston doesn't win it all this year
They will next year. They are absolutely stacked, and in my opinion, Wade Phillips is a phenomenal defensive coach. If there’s really a “best” at that position, he’s certainly one of the two or three you’d discuss. No one is better than he is.

He has significantly regressed since that game. I think it totally killed his confidence, or something. Good luck to your Steelers today. I’m excited for the prospect of a rematch in Foxboro.

Mario Williams and J.J. Watt with Wade Phillips coaching them…they’ll surrender 11 points a game, tops.

Yates has Andre Johnson, a great running game, and an O-Line in HOU, better than he would get with any team that needs a QB. He needs to prove that he can win games when he can’t lean on his teammates.

I was in Cincy for a Steelers game some years ago and the Steelers received the 3rd quarter kick. Antwaan Randle El returns it for a TD and great clusters of “fans” left! Those heading up the steps to their seats turned around and walked back down.

Cincy is one of the toughest teams for me to watch play.
I know they’re young, but holy hell…. they lack the fundamentals that high school JV teams have a hold of. I don’t know how Bungle fans do it….. SMH
HERE WE GO STEELERS!
"Our Father, who art in Pittsburgh, Football be thy game. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, at Heinz Field as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, a stellar D and forgive us our bogus fines, as we (sorta) forgive Goodell who trespasses against us. And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us a Victory. For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."
Hello....
Saints vs Lions seems to be a good watch… Saints Offense are literally impossible to stop, so to is Megatron..
Lions got jobbed
But Breesus was unstoppable….
Last week the Lions couldn’t challenge a play that WASNT called a TD because the refs had already blown two calls prior. The Lions challenged both and only one was overturned, the other was obviously a catch. So they couldn’t challenge and lost a TD.
Then this week you have a play that basically was like the ‘forward pass that wasn’t’ against the Ravens with Ben and the Ravens scored a TD. Only this time Detroit didn’t get to return the ball cause some a-hole blew the whistle. 7 points on D gone.
Then on a 3rd and 1 Detroit CLEARLY stopped the runner shy and got a free yard from the ref. They gave great spots to NO all night. Breesus drove them down the field for 7. I don’t think even Peyton would have gone for it from inside his 20 on 4th down, but he does have large balls.
I respect the saints team a lot, except for Pierre Thomas who is a french assfuckface. He faked an injury tonight to try to get a call. Might not have seen it, I saw it on the Argentinian feed here. He got slammed on a play slightly after the whistle and no flag was thrown. He almost immediately started getting up but soon as he saw people wanted a flag he flopped down and sprawled out like he was knocked out.
But the Saints aren’t all bad, didn’t run up the score unnecessarily at the end there. Good folks overall, fun to watch. But damn the Lions got screwed over I feel in this game. All they had to do was make a couple defensive stops. And they did. But the refs never gave them anything for it.
while they did sorta get jobbed, that’s not why the lost. Dropped int’s (3 i think) horrendous tackling, etc. They killed themselves.
I do find it hilarious how the O lines of N.E, N.O, and G.B (especially) are allowed to legally hold. It’s ridiculous. The hold called on the Lions was weak shit compared to the holds that were routinely not getting called against N.O. It really makes me sick
That spot was horrible too, should have challenged it. But they would have just went for it and got it.
This is the problem with the Flacco hate, people don’t really know who he is as a person. - Mr. Malor. Crazy Raven fan/possible stalker.
Agreed on the INTs...
But do you really think Sean Payton’s balls are so enormous as to go for a 4th and 1 inside the 25 yard line? The other one was at the 39.
Theres a big difference, I don’t think even he is that ballsy.
The Saints won't get any home cooking next week in SF
