BTSC Steelers Six Pack: So Begins Another Offseason Edition

Blerg. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)

IX - Dale Lolley weighed in on the Steelers shocking overtime loss to the Broncos late Sunday night, as well as the season as a whole and where the team stands heading into the 2012 offseason. Good stuff, as always, from Dale.

X - Ron Cook files his usual post-game 'Two-Minute Drill' at the Post-Gazzette.

XIII - Pete Wilmoth at SB Nation Pittsburgh points to Demaryius Thomas as the player who deserves the lion's share of the credit for the Broncos' unexpected offensive success against the Steelers top-ranked defense.

XIV - Here's Benstonium's latest parody video, which will hopefully provide a quick laugh on a gloomy Monday in Steeler Nation. Great stuff as always.

XL - Your obligatory Tim Tebow article. 'It's time to believe in Tebow.' Agree or disagree?

XLIII - A new offseason means the revival of draft talk. We'll have our usual comprehensive coverage here in the months to come, including a new four round mock draft perhaps as early as today. But for now, here's Rob Rang's latest mock draft for the Steelers, who we now know will be selecting at No. 24.

Draft

Now we have to pull for the Broncos to go to the SB, so we can move up 1 spot in the draft.

How would that make us move up?

If the Broncos go to the SB

Their draft position changes from being based on their 8-8 record to being either the 31st or 32nd pick.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Jan 9, 2012 1:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I learned that in the '08 playoffs

Because it happened to the Falcons when the Cards made SB XLIII. I heard about it because I lived in Atlanta then.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Jan 9, 2012 1:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Wait, so we would get a lower pick then them even though they went further in the playoffs?

i think the draft slots only change for the two super bowl participants . . .

they are always 31 and 32 . . . i believe the also-rans fall into their seasonal record rankings.

I don’t think you’re right. Ravens, 12-4 in 2010, picked before the Jets, 11-5 last year.

I don't think that is accurate

I believe how it works is that the teams that are eliminated first are ordered by winning percentage, then the next rounds elimination are ordered by winning percentage then the championship eliminations. Thus the Steelers are guaranteed the 24th pick in the draft.

Last year as an example

Wildcard weekend losses were KC, NO, Indy and Philly. Philly, KC and indy were 10-6, NO 11-5 thus based off other tie breaker KC was #21 Indy #22 Philly #23 NO #24 then the divisional loser were Seatle (7-9) #25 Ravens (12-4) #26 Atlanta (13-3) #27 Patriots (14-2) #28 then the Conference Champ losers by record Chicago #29 and Jets #30 then SB loser Pit #31 then the champs #32

That Tebow is great. He was held to 60 yards passing the week before.

I think he looked brilliant because he played against a severly injured and very ill-prepared team that refuses to make adjustments. Sometimes the standard is crap.

A season to learn from

I will not elaborate here on this, if I can find the time I’ll write a post on the subject, but I believe several very important lessons should be taken from this season.

-Can we manage injuries better to enter the playoffs with less while still giving us a chance to win? (trust in our backup QB/depth important here)
-Can Ben be coached to improve on his reading and ability to take what the defense gives him instead of forcing throws or holding for something better (or, more often, worse). If he is ever to become an elite QB, this needs to happen.
-Never put 9 or 10 in the box consistently, no matter who is playing QB. That gameplan is to be remembered so we NEVER do it again.
-A good kicker is a must, a good punter is a afterthought.
-Is our training program really working? We have been severely bit by the injury bug recently, could we be better prepared physically?

Finally, what are our needs moving forward? This will be addressed extensively as we move towards the draft, but here’s a starting point :
-Guard. Kemoeatu has got to go (even though he played a decent game yesterday) and we need better talent up front.
-Linebacker. Depth needed outside (I’m not buying Worilds as anything other than no.4 outside at this point) and Farrior’s replacement inside. Real talent needed here.
-LT. Starks needs to be resigned and his future replacement drafted and groomed. The the right side is in good hands.
-Kicker. Nuff said.
-Safety, NT, QB. These three positions need to have a serious youth infusion. We need a QB we can trust to win us games when (there’s no if about it) Ben gets injured. Maybe then we don’t play him injured and compromise our season…

good post

-This year’s secondary was much better than last year’s, but I think we still need some help there.
-The OL is still a sore spot – Isaac was good yesterday by we cannot run the ball consistently when we need to and Ben gets hit way too much.
-Don’t know if it falls on the linebackers, the DL, or some of both, but there is not nearly enough pressure on the passer for a top-ranked defense. Tebow had way too much time to look downfield and pick his targets. Compare the heat the Giants put on Atlanta with what we did (or didnt) do to Denver
- Coaches need to man up and accept their role in the losses this season. Only the opener against Baltimore was a butt-kicking with no chance to win. Play calling and clock management have been poor and have cost us!

by rockncoal on Jan 9, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

We already got next years LT

Marcus Gilbert. Shifts to the Left Side, while Colon returns to the right. Just need a dominant Guard to make this a truly formiddable OL.

by SteelerMessican on Jan 9, 2012 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Risky + no depth

I would not bet the farm on Gilbert on the left. I would back that up by bringing Starks back, and I would still draft another guy to develop. You can never have too many good tackles. Or at the very least, having a quality backup is a must at each position, and Jonathan Scott ain’t it.

Our "O" Lineman

I totally despise Terrell Owens, but I really admire the energy, desire and toughness that he shows while getting after opposing QB’s. Our Offensive Linemen need to show that same desire to block him and the Clay Matthews of the league. I am tired of seeing 330 plus linemen running around chasing someone who has beaten them and end up getting holding penalties. They need to learn this in camp when they have the one on one drills. It is time that these guys earn their pay. Conditioning plays a big part in this equation. They need to learn fro Harrison what meanness is (and apply it without getting fines – LOL).

I don’t know what players normally do during the off season. I would like to blame it on the lockout but there were a lot of injuries last season as well.

There is a real problem in conditioning. All positions except the place kicker missed games due to injury.

It's seems to be a problem

The FO and Tomlin need to reassess what they do in the offseason as far as physical preparation, because we have to get better in that area.

Dick, what would Woody (Hayes) say to you now: "He'd say, 'LeBeau, get your hair cut.'"

by Steelfrog on Jan 9, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

I DEFINITELY agree with you

Also, I feel that it was very bad decision making the way that they played Ben when he was trying to play in spite of the injuries that he had incurred. It is natural for a young player to want to play every game. But, Tomlin should have intervened like he did with Clark. I wish that other players had the intestinal fortitude that Ben had. But there comes a time when the Coach and Management says “Ben, you WILL sit this/these games out”. And we need to have a capable backup/backups to sub for him. I think that we have a lot of “dead weight” that we need to get rid of over the winter.

by Allen F on Jan 9, 2012 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

Clark was lifethreatening

Ben’s was debilitating but not life threatening.

anyone trying to contact me via my yahoo account should be aware it has been hacked

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Jan 9, 2012 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

This was not the same Ben QB'ing the team that we have come to know and trust to come through for us

Also having a weak O line did not help. If Ben had his usual mobility, there is no doubt who would have won the game. We expected “too much” from him. He is only human. Though his condition was not life threatening, it could have been career threatening had he taken a good hit. It was a bad decision playing him in “any” game after we knew we were in the playoffs. Resting those injuries for 3 weeks would have been invaluable to him. Bill Cower said as much on the NFL Channel. Ben, Pouncey AND Woodley should have been rested. In a previous post (before his injury), I stated that Mendy could have been rested. But, thanks to having a backup like Redman, Mendy’s absence was not as significant. All of this is just playing Monday Morning Quarterback, so I will not comment on it any further. The season is over.

by Allen F on Jan 9, 2012 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yet if

the Steelers had rested Ben after the Cleveland game, the Ravens had lost a game to the Chargers or Bengals, and the Steelers had lost to Niners with Batch playing, the pitchforkers would have been out in force complaining that Tomlin cost the team a bye.

Really, no decision was good. That’s why Tomlin gets the big bucks.

by DG Lewis on Jan 9, 2012 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

But we still would have still been in the playoffs - and with those players having 3 weeks to heal

I feel confident that with all of those players healthy, we could beat anyone – whether home or away. But that is just my opinion. And you are possibly correct about the “pitchforkers”.

When your high-paid athletes don’t take the time to get in proper condition, you get a lousy return on your investments. Take Woodley for example.

by Billy52 on Jan 9, 2012 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

When someone pays you money like these guys are receiving, it makes no sense that they would not spend the summer getting in shape. And for the rookies, uninformed and “newbies” to learn their roles and responsibilities on offense and defense. This is their JOB. I was very perplexed with “Sly” for not knowing where he was supposed to be when he was given a starting role. He showed a lot of promise with his ST play. Jonathan Stewart was another – out of shape as was Casey. But, they are only one of many.

i cant tell you how infuriating it is to see tebow on the front page of this website

this is a steelers site, and it should be about what the steelers did or did not do in the game, not about the other team’s QB. tebow is a little attention whore and i cant wait for the world to turn on him when he faces some real adversity.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Jan 9, 2012 3:22 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I agree AND disagree with you steel.curtain.number2

True – Tebow should NOT get front page on “our” site. I am as strong of a Steeler fan there is. I have followed and backed them since the Bobby Lane days – and as you know those days were not kind to us. And this site should reflect on our team not others. But, I don’t think that Tebow is an “attenion whore”. Brady YES, but not Tebow. IMHO he (Tebow) is a good kid who likes playing the game of football and does it to the best of his ability. But I don’t feel that the world should turn on him because of his success and faith in God. He is facing adversity and not complaining when things do not fall in his favor. He has come a long way and continues to improve. It hurt me to see him dissect our Defense the way he did. But, the blame should be on our Defensive players and coordinators for not making the proper adjustments. Not against a good kid who played his heart out and “gave his all” to succeed. I am not going to dwell on the subject of Tebow, because, as you said – this is a Steelers site. I think that we had a very talented team this year. But because of numerous injuries AND bad decisions by players, coaches and management, we are left to ponder about what might have been. It is going to be a long winter for me.

Team Needs

Think everyone is forgetting that Colon will be back next year. Possibly meaning Gilbert moving to LT. 1) Need stud ILB,2) Road Grading Guard, 3) Nose Tackle, 4)Safety, 5)Kicker
Need to release several veterans to free up cap space. We are around 20mil over the cap. Also need to acquire some depth through free agency. How about bringing in a bruising RB such as Mike Tolbert from SD?

by STEELERFOB on Jan 9, 2012 7:48 PM EST reply actions

What,

Redman and Clay aren’t bruising enough for you?

by DG Lewis on Jan 9, 2012 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Pass blocking LG is more the ticket

Kemo can run block. His problem is pass blocking.

Tolbert and any other vet who is worth their salt will be too expensive for the Steelers cap situation unless they sign for vet min. I think the Steelers need a back who can run outside the tackles, which would be Mendy if he is healthy.

anyone trying to contact me via my yahoo account should be aware it has been hacked

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Jan 10, 2012 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

I think that al lot is expected from Baron Batch also

Also Kemo needs to stop making “boneheaded mistakes” that cost us in penalty yards. Our OL needs a lot of off season conditioning, healing and soul searching. I hope that the entire team will use the off-season wisely and come back with a new dedication. The tools are there. And with a good draft we should be a force to be recognized. But damn – next year seems so far away.

by Allen F on Jan 10, 2012 3:53 AM EST up reply actions

Clay?

Unproven. Only playing due to injuries. Redman sure love him, should have gotten much more playing time this past season. Batch will def. be an asset and will probably take Meweldes spot on the roster.

by STEELERFOB on Jan 10, 2012 4:02 AM EST reply actions

I think that Dwyer will also be cut and Clay will replace him on the roster.

Am not sure what they will do with Dixon. They are not going to probably cut him and draft a good prospect. Would rather see us keep him and let Charlie retire. Mwelde will join other vets on the “cut list”. We will probably/regrettably cut Hines because he cannot get touches because we have many “younguns” available and they (at this time) are cheaper than him. And at this stage in his career, they are are more of an asset. I look for Hines to end up at our NFL farm team (Cards). I think that he he still has a couple of good years left. Hate to see him go – but “business is business”. Wish him a lot of success. We are going to have to make some “painful” veteran cuts. But as I said – "business is business.

by Allen F on Jan 10, 2012 4:35 AM EST reply actions

Need to stop calling themselves fancy names and start getting open and not dropping passes. I say keep Hines and cut whom ever drops the most passes in camp.

I agree that they should cutout all of the "frills" and grandstanding, but...........

As far as cutting any of them – NO. They, especially Brown needs to quit the grandstanding. He seems like a nice kid when he is interviewed, and hopefully the example set by Hines will rub off on him. We “blew it” this past season and we need to do a lot of soul searching in the off-season – the entire organization, players, coaches and Management. We need to stress fitness of the players and knowledge of their roles. Also we need to quit thinking that Ben is Superman and get him the protection that he needs and deserves. Then he won’t have to scramble so much and sustain the injuries that he has suffered the past 2 seasons. And by all means we need to have capable backups for him. I disagree with those who say that Dixon is not a good QB. We need to either play him in some kind of capacity to keep him game ready or trade or cut him. We are loaded with talent and it is up to the Coaches to know how and when to use it – and unload the excess baggage. Do I sound frustrated? You are damn right I am.
