NFL News: Colts release running back Mewelde Moore

The former Steelers veteran had nine carries and 14 yards in seven games with the Colts.

Another one bites the dust, perhaps.

After seeing very limited action for the young and surprising Indianapolis Colts, running back Mewelde Moore,a former Steelers veteran, was released Monday.

Moore had 14 yards on nine carries this season, midway through his first season away from the Steelers since 2007. Moore was reunited with former Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who's acting as the Colts head coach in the absence of Chuck Pagano who's undergoing treatment for Leukemia.

He rushed for 962 yards and five touchdowns in four seasons with Pittsburgh, but his value was more as a veteran leader of a running backs group that had several young faces throughout his tenure. He won a Super Bowl with the Steelers in 2008.

Incidentally, Moore was released partially to make way for a fullback - Robert Hughes - a position Arians didn't employ while he was in Pittsburgh. The Colts and Steelers are both 4-3, with the Colts holding claim to the AFC's final wild card spot if the playoffs were to begin after Week 8.

This could be the end of the veteran Moore's career. He never was a feature back, but was a serviceable role player on several outstanding Steelers teams.
