Former Steelers, Giants and Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress impressed the Steelers coaching staff enough at a tryout Tuesday that ESPN Adam's Schefter is reporting he will be offered a contract.

The reunification of Plaxico Burress and the Pittsburgh Steelers is imminent, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Burress caught 45 passes in 2011 for 612 yards and eight touchdowns - three of them came in a 27-21 win over San Diego in Week 7.

"He's in great physical condition, based on the workout I just saw," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said at his press conference Tuesday. "He drops his weight into his routes real well, and obviously, he knows football."

Burress, 35, was the Steelers' first round draft pick in 2000 - No. 8 overall. He is the highest drafted player the Steelers have taken since RB Tim Worley in 1989.

Burress wasn't signed to an extension after his rookie contract expired in 2004. He signed with the New York Giants, becoming one of the few players to have success after leaving Pittsburgh. He caught 244 passes for 3,681 yards and 33 touchdowns in 57 games in New York.

In 2008, one season after winning Super Bowl XLVII with the Giants, Burress shot himself in the leg with a concealed handgun, one for which he wasn't licensed, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 3.5 years in prison in New York.

He was convicted in August, 2009, and sentenced to two years in prison.

Upon his release last season, he signed with the Jets, and was used primarily as a red zone target.

Tomlin said the receiver they were looking to sign would "fill a 4th or 5th position on the depth chart," and also noted injured WR Antonio Brown hasn't been ruled out yet for participation in Pittsburgh's Week 12 game.
