The Steelers needed to make room on their roster for the inclusion of both David DeCastro and John Malecki, so they put Marcus Gilbert on the IR and released WR David Gilreath. That likely means WR Antonio Brown is nearing a return to the field.
Doing the math quick...the Steelers now have three wide receivers who played in Week 12 - Emmanuel Sanders, Mike Wallace and Plaxico Burress.
With Toney Clemons being signed by Jacksonville to their active roster, and the release of WR David Gilreath, the Steelers only have two options if they wish to carry four wide receivers into Baltimore for their Week 13 game.
Jerricho Cotchery, who broke two ribs against the Ravens two weeks ago, and Antonio Brown, who hasn't played since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 9 against the New York Giants.
Two broken ribs plus two weeks of time off < high ankle sprain plus four weeks of time off.
When you break it down mathematically, it makes sense. The Steelers are likely going to have the return of Antonio "Third and 19" Brown back against division rival Baltimore.
How much that will help remains to be seen. High ankle sprains are lingering injuries, and make cutting and accelerating difficult. It doesn't seem like it would take much for Brown to make more of an impact than Wallace and Burress, who had one catch for nine yards on 10 targets between them against Cleveland.
