I know all the national talking heads are raving over Andrew Luck and the Colts and while I don't have necessarily dislike Luck for any reason, I think their "return to glory this season" is being massively overblown. Don't get me wrong, Luck is having a fantastic rookie season and looks like he's going to be a damn good QB for a very long time, but don't tell me their going to do anything other than get drilled in the first round of the playoffs. They've been the beneficiary of a last place schedule and pulled out quite a few close wins. Their 8-4 record makes them look like one of the better teams in the AFC but it's all a mirage, and here's the proof:
- I love the stat of point differential and theirs is telling, they've been outscored by their opponents by 41 points on the season. No other team with a winning record has a negative point differential and even teams like the 4-8 Browns and Lions are better than a minus 41.
- The biggest reason for the porous point differential is that most of the wins are close games but they've got absolutely killed in three games. In three losses to the Bears, Jets and Pats they were outscored by a combined 81 points. Seven of their eight wins though have been one score games and their average margin of victory is just over five and a half points.
- As for their record, the combined record of their opponents to date is 62-82. They've got one win against a team with a winning record (Packers in week 4) and they've only played three teams who are currently over .500. In addition three of their wins have come in the final minute of the fourth quarter or overtime.
What does all that add up to? To me, their team that's squeaking by against the bottom feeders of the NFL and anytime they run up against a decent team they get exposed. They remind me quite a bit of the Chiefs from a couple years ago, although the Colts probably won't fall off a cliff like Kansas City did after 2010. Either way, I just had to get on my soap box for a bit because of tired of hearing about how the Colts are back. They're the most overrated team in football right now.
