Steelers promote cornerback Josh Victorian to active roster, waive Brian Hoyer

As health concerns rotate from quarterback to defensive back, the Steelers make the appropriate roster moves in preparation for Chargers.

As speculated earlier this week, the return of Ben Roethlisberger to starter status spelled doom for Brian Hoyer.

On Saturday afternoon, those musings were confirmed as the Pittsburgh Steelers took action to fill the void left by Ike Taylor, who suffered a hairline fracture against the Baltimore Ravens in week 13.

Several veterans were invited for workouts earlier this week, including Stanford Routt who signed with the Houston Texans, and Justin King who has NFL experience with the Indianapolis Colts and St. Louis Rams; but no one was signed. Because no suitable options were found outside the organization, the Steelers have decided to look inward.

The Steelers promoted cornerback Josh Victorian to the active roster. Victorian was signed during the preseason, after beginning camp with the New England Patriots. Victorian had a fair showing in camp, and earned a spot on the practice squad over the Steelers seventh-round pick Terrence Frederick.

While time on the roster will give Victorian a better opportunity to contribute and prove his value; it is unlikely Victorian will see any action, other than possibly special teams, as the Steelers take on the San Diego Chargers in week 14.

To make room for Victorian, the Steelers waived Brian Hoyer. With Roethlisberger expected to reprise his starring role, Byron Leftwich expected to return from a rib injury that has sidelined him for the past two weeks, and Charlie Batch remaining healthy after leading the Steelers to a last second victory against bitter rival Baltimore; the team no longer felt the need to hold onto four quarterbacks.

Hoyer, who also originally played in the Bill Belichek camp, never took a snap in Pittsburgh, although uncertainty surrounding Batch's ability to play at an advanced age brought Hoyer's name into the conversation on more than one occasion.

Perhaps the Steelers will invite Hoyer to camp in preparation for 2013, in order to gauge his potential to be a long term answer; but he is definitely not in the Steelers short term plans to bring home another Super Bowl championship.
