Report: Steelers Don't Want Ward

According to NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora, the Steelers do not want Hines Ward to return for the 2012 season. We'll see if either party confirms or denies this. This may come as a shock to some, but many users here on BTSC have stated that they wanted the Steelers to cut Ward to make room for younger receivers who could contribute on special teams or another veteran presence. If this report is true, we may see the Steelers signing unrestricted free agent Jerricho Cotchery. If we remember, Cotchery started to play well down the stretch once he healed up from his injury. He even made a pretty amazing touchdown catch during the wild card game in the playoffs where we saw our Steelers fall 29-23 against the Tebow-led Broncos.

I for one am not really surprised. I feel like Hines still has some gas left in the tank, but perhaps Bruce Arians preferred the speedier options in Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders (we all know Arians likes the deep ball). Hines was still a big part of the running game, so we'll see if the other receivers can step it up and fill in the shoes of one the, if not the best blocking receivers this game has seen.

In his 14 year NFL career, Hines has broken many Steelers receiving records. He has amassed 1000 receptions, 12,083 receiving yards, and 85 receiving touchdowns. If this report is true, I hope Hines decides to hang up the cleats and retires. I know he has said he is willing to play for another team if need be, but that would be heartbreaking as a Steelers fan to watch.

Would be heart breakin but let's face it

when went down in the AZ game this year the offense seemed to speed up. Ward is going in Canton so what more awards could he get.

Retiring where he started. That’s the last award he wants… Oh and another ring.

I'm waiting for the Steelers to release information

so far this offseason, more mis-information has been given than has been completely accurate. Nope… not buying it until it comes from an OFFICIAL source.

:(

If this turns out to be true, the day they cut him will rank up there with the day Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls (the second time) as one of the two saddest days of my life as a sports fan.

I guess we will see

Ooookay… I got the feeling from some reporters that covered the Steelers that the FO was hinting that it was Arians’s call that Hines was benched. Some were cheering that Arains being gone would be great for Hines. It hits me as odd that someone in the FO would leak this (If it is not Hine’s people) when Hines said he would work somethig out to stay.

If Hines is gone I guess signs point more to a new offense than a tweek.

I suggested retirement

after the season for the future Hall of Famer, but this is a tough decision to make, if it turns out to be official. We don’t know exactly what went on in the recent meeting between the club and Ward, it’s possible Hines offered a reduction which wasn’t quite in range for the team.

Hurting Ward’s case was the salary cap crunch, and he can’t play special teams like he did back in 1998. In a perfect world, Ward would have stepped down like Swann and Stallworth, but in the big picture, his contributions far outweigh the less than ideal ending.

Those of us old enough to remember Franco in a contract dispute with the Steelers and finishing up with Seattle realize the great memories outshine everything. This type of situation occurs in all sports, the business aspect comes into play. Even the legendary Babe Ruth didn’t go out with the Yankees, he finished with the old Boston Braves. John Unitas was let go by the Baltimore Colts and finished up with San Diego. These things happen, even if we prefer Ward doesn’t sign elsewhere.

Either way, I would understand

If it is true, then Hines will have to see if another team would want a soon to be 36 year old WR with no quickness anymore. I am still holding out hope Hines will come back at the veteran minimum with heavy incentives for one more year. 2012 can become much like 2005 for Jerome Bettis and we all know how that turned out :)

I also have a feeling Jerricho Cotchery wants big money. Given he is 30 and he realizes this is his last chance at a multiyear deal, he will go for it but I think he will find it elsewhere. I just don’t see the Steelers with their impending cap issues giving Cotchery what he wants. We could also lose Mike Wallace (however unlikely) if another team offers him a huge multiyear deal. Those two moves alone could bring Hines back into the fold. I mean, as much as Sanders and Brown (especially Brown) developed from year one to two, I don’t think the Steelers want to go into next season with those two guys and not much depth behind them. As long as Hines knows his role will be that of 3rd/4th WR and perhaps red zone packages, I don’t see why he could not come back.

Cotchery has next to no base to demand money

Not sure where you got that feeling from.

You make a valid point Michael. But in a league where guys like Nate Burleson get big contracts for putting up decent but not amazing numbers, I am sure Cotchery and his agent believe they can snag one too. I don’t think it will come from us. If it comes down to Cotchery for a multiyear deal or Hines on a one year, veteran minimum deal, which one do you choose? I love Hines and for me, that decision would be very difficult.

Not to take a single thing away from Cotchery, but if given the choice, I’d rather see Hines.

Why? Cotchery is the better player.

Because then, Riddiah, it comes down to loyalty. Cotchery isn’t that far ahead of Hines in ability and playing time that I wouldn’t give Hines the tip of the scales because of all he HAS done.

In your opinion

And in mine… it’s a great way to run a business because you’re not give up anything and continuing a bond of trust and loyalty that will follow you, with the players present and future that you can’t buy.

Cotchery isn’t Antonio Brown or Mike Wallace. And Hines Ward isn’t some scrub from the PS that is being carried around as dead weight.

Paying someone for past production, even though they now have little to no use, is a good way to run a business? Lol okay.

If Hines was “little or no use” it would be valid for you to say that. How much more significant was Cotchery’s roll this year vs. Hines?? Not much, stud.

That being said, you damn straight I’d give the nod to the guy who spent his whole career with me over a 1 possibly 2 year guy who would gladly take an offer for $1 more somewhere else considering their play, their playing time and much else is equal.

Riddlah

You have to also understand the past, Ward has taken paycuts before to stay with this franchise. He actually has more talent than Cotchery, and could be kept for a cheaper price. This could be a case of, cut him today-sign him tomorrow.

Off topic: What price per year to keep Wallace

by Pittsblitz56 on Feb 11, 2012 4:49 PM EST reply actions

I will just say this...

If Hines Ward wants to retire a Pittsburgh Steeler, and he is reasonable in his restructuring it would be a mistake for the Steelers to not restructure and keep him. He is a once in a generational player, someone who fans can truly identify with. You hold on to those guys if it reasonable to do so. He is not asking to be the first or second option on your team, just a contributor. He has been an important part of not only two SB champoinships, but also of a winning tradition that in many ways extends through two generations of Steelers football.

It matters little to me that there might be a WR on the roster who currently has better skills than Hines who could conceivably take his place. There is no one who has his heart. He is the example of Steelers football and you just don’t cast that aside because his skills are not what they once were.

I know that Hines is no longer at the top of his game, and that there will be others on the 53 that can perform at a higher physical level than he can now, but no one can embody Pittsburgh Steelers football like Hines could.

Do the right thing Steelers, find a reason to keep him on the roster. His leadership, his legacy are too much to simply ignore. He is one of the great Steelers of all time.

If I see someone post that him going to another team wouldn’t taint his legacy, than I think vomiting is in full order.

Please don’t come to me with your logical arguments that Hines should be replaced. He’s not like any other player, and anyone who is a legit Steelers fan should recognize that. he deserves to go out on his own terms (provided his demands aren’t outrageous) Do the right thing Pittsburgh, take care of Hines Ward, He gave all to you for so many years. Heart and soul.

I am speaking for a group that I know is out there. If you choose to simply cut Hines, I will lose some of my passion for your football team. I’m not saying I would abandon the Steelers, but I would recognize the cold blooded plan made and reject it.

Realty check: it happens

And this is where I have a problem

The business of football has to happen. There’s no getting around it and we only know what players and organizations want us to know.

If your fandom and loyalty to a team is based on what happens with a single player vs. what will benefit the WHOLE, then I just have to shake my head.

I want Hines back too, but my loyalty is to the TEAM and not just Team Hines.

If they can cut Franco when he's past it...

then they certainly can cut Hines. The bottom line is that roster spots are reserved for players that can produce. Hines had a very long run in the sun, but that time is over.

You can’t take it personally. This happens every 5 to 10 years where a player that is a fan favorite is shown the door. If it was like college where they suited up 80 players then they’d keep him. As it is they will be cutting not just Hines, but other players that still are productive after training camp.
