Who are your Top 5 Steelers of all time?
Here's my take:
5. Jack Lambert
3. Joe Greene
2. The Bus
1. Hines Ward
There are certainly many others that could be placed on this list but the rationale for this specific fanpost is that many Steeler fans' #1 player would be Hines Ward. He is everything that embodies not only Steeler football but the general identity of the region's people: hard work, perseverance, toughness, and resiliency. It would certainly be a day of mourning when he isn't wearing Black n' Gold.

Agree Wholeheartedly about Ham
Incredible student of the game and player. Not a media draw like Lambert, but quietly did his job with excellence. An integral part of the 70ies SB runs and a Steeler great all the way.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
1. Mel Blount
2. Franco Harris
3. Hines Ward
4. Troy Polamalu
5. Jack Lambert
I have several could-be-tied-for’s but like the organization, I made tough decisions. lol
HERE WE GO STEELERS!
"Our Father, who art in Pittsburgh, Football be thy game. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, at Heinz Field as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, a stellar D and forgive us our bogus fines, as we (sorta) forgive Goodell who trespasses against us. And lead us not into defeat, but deliver us a Victory. For thine is The Steelers, the power and glory of climbing the STAIRWAY TO 7."
"Oh... you're a northerner. What exactly do they call 'you people' from Pittsburgh?" "They just call us LUCKY."
Steeler Mount Rushmore......Too many favs for only 5 and hard for those of us who remember the 70's as well
Has to have Mean Joe on the list as he (and Noll) were the pioneers of the modern Steeler Era of dominance. He was the initial spark. Given that…..my personal fab 5 would be.
Greene
Swannie
Lambert
Hines
Troy
Absolutely. The 70’s make it tough… Mike Webster, LC Greenwood, Ham, Shell, Rocky, Bradshaw, Banizack etc. Then trying to fit Gregg Lloyd in there…
We need a bigger mountain.

Players Only?
If not, I’d want to put Chuck Noll somewhere in there. He was instrumental in taking a bunch of losers and making them into multiple SB winners. Went about it in a quiet, workmanlike fashion. Steeler all the way.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
hmmm
I don’t know if I have a top 5 but it might be:
5) Rocky Bleier
4) Hines Ward
3) Joe Greene
2) Troy
1) Jam Ham
To be honest, there are too many great Steelers and this runs into the Mount Rushmore issue. I am not all that comfortable for ranking them especially as their eras were so different and there are just too many to evaluate properly.

Just trying to stir up some discussion...
& wondering why you chose the Chin over the Chaz. Personality? Scheme? Coaching Style? (again, not trying to put you on the spot, or make any type of judgement, just for discussion’s sake)
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
Chaz-Tomlin-Chin….
Chaz wins because he never had to deal with FA…

Why Tomlin over The Chin?

Also, the flexibility to adapt the game to what we have instead of being hell bent on running 75% of the time. As Tomlin said when FWP was saying we weren’t playing “Steeler football” “Steeler football is winning”.
I don’t hate Cowher or anything, he’s obviously pretty damn good, I just prefer Tomlin and think that his big game success is special (2-0 in the AFCCG 1-1 in the SB)
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
My brother personally knows Cowher, and I have also met him on several occasions, so that I why I chose him
Chuck Noll’s style of coaching never really appealed to me, but I don’ t know as much about him as I do about Cowher. I reserve my judgement on Tomlin until I see a little bit more coaching experience. Not sure what to think about him yet.

Cool!
I’ll bet Coach C is a real kick! He’s the guy out of the three that I would rather have a few beers around a campfire with.
Noll always seemed a bit socially awkward & kind of a cold fish, but he’ll always be my favorite because the way he turned the franchise around.
Ditto on Tomlin as far as waiting to see. Like what he’s done (& not done) so far tho’.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.
Ive only been a fan since 2002
So I’ll go with:
5. Jerome Bettis
4. Hines Ward
3. Ben Roethlisberger
2. Joey Porter
1. Lamarr Woodley

I’m feeling the Woodley love.

Just his personality, work ethic, performance and general love and loyalty to the Steelers makes him my all time favorite right now

I agree, though Hines is still #1
but LaMarr is right up there for me too. The biggest thing that made me a fan is he played out his entire rookie contract, making just above leage minimum until last year, even though he was outperforming it. Instead of holding out and whining for more money, he stayed quiet, worked hard, and EARNED his big contract.

The quietly dominant ones will always be my favorites
LC Greenwood
Randy Grossman
John Stallworth (maybe not really unsung, but always seemed to be overshadowed by Swann)
Jack Ham
Chuck Noll
All these guys (at least in my perception of them) quietly went about their business of winning and striving for excellence. I think most of them also played / coached for the Steelers for their entire NFL career & that counts for a lot to me as well. Heath and Redman seem to be made of the same stuff.
Bound to cover just a little more ground.

Randy Grossman is probably the most under-rated and overlooked Steeler of all time.

“D’oh!” on me for missing him. Hoke was a outstanding NT who also quietly kicked ass. Always in the shadow of Fat Casey (and that’s quite a shadow), but was great in his own right.
Man, I wish that he was still in the mix.

ben and terry yes (hence benshaw)
but I think Hines and Swann are nearly opposite in their styles – except for being winners.
but Swan went over the middle alot, just like Hines. I don't know how much they ever asked him to block
(i’m thinking not so much-since the O-line was so much better in those days).

4. LImas (when my 3d son messes up at home I ask him if he’s going Limas on me)
5. Santonio (big player on the field, big playa off the field)

Ben is great
but I’d take Bradshaw any day over him. People forget that Bradshaw had 1 league MVP and 2 SB MVP’s to go along with a 4-0 mark on getting rings.
Both are great, but I’d go old school.
Pouncey right now is the 4th best Center we’ve had. Gotta go with Webster, Dirt, and Hartings before Pouncey. He needs to 1) stay healthy, and 2) do it for a long time before he cracks even the top 3 at that position.
For me?
By far Jerome Bettis. I love Harrison too. What an absolute beast. Talking about striking fear in all opponents. That’s Harrison 100%.

Too hard a question
Even just limiting it to guys I’ve seen play (1990 on) I couldn’t limit myself to only five. So I’ll throw out the five guys who made me proudest to be a Steeler fan.
Greg Lloyd
Hines Ward
Jerome Bettis
James Harrison
Joey Porter
Carnell Lake
Brett Keisel
Dermonti Dawson
See I just can’t do it. Here’s one my favorite Steelers who weren’t huge stars.
James Farrior
Ernie Mills
Isaac Redman
Deshea Townsend
Dan Kreider
Troy-lovers take note.
Troy is a great player but, if you compare his stats to those of former Steeler great Donnie Shell, he really doesn’t stack up too well. Shell could stop the run just as well as Troy and he had a lot more interceptions.
Donnie Shell
was one of the biggest hitters of all time. That man could demolish anything that came his way.

Lambert

Blount

Polamalu
People dont realize how Mel Blount changed the game with his size, 6’3" and over 200 pounds. He had the size, physicality and speed to dominate receivers. His bump and run style literally forced the NFL to stiffen the rules on defensive players touching/bumping receivers. One of the best corners to ever play in the NFL.

yep, it was literally called the Mel Blount rule because of him.
there has never been a corner with his size with that dominance.
How about a BIG SNACK!!!
Although he does only have 9 sacks in his career think about how many less everyone else would have if Casey wasn’t in there mauling 2-3 opposing lineman at a time opening the way for the LB’s to clean up the stats! yes hes out of shape, and doesnt play every down but it would be a different Steeler world without him, one we may have to face sooner than we would like to think…

Rough draft got in here somehow
by Tim Mullhaupt (HSS) on Feb 15, 2012 4:50 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I'm 19
So:
5. Joey Porter-Loved his fire
4. Ben-There was a time in ‘09 offseason where I was calling for his head, but he won me back with his gritt and gunslinging. Plus he’s the first great Steelers Qb in my lifetime.
3. LaMarr Woodley-Current favorite player, though Antonio Brown is a close second (not in the top 5 yet for the sole purpose of inexperience). ‘07 was the first year I gave the draft a good look, and his name for whatever reason just had a ring to it that made me think "that’s a Steelers linebacker." I looked at his youtube reel and could not believe he was taken as low as 46. To this day I still get a rush of adrenaline when he gets a sack, which typically involves me screaming at the tv while he does his flying kick.
2. Hines-My first jersey of a non-retiree, and a guy who has been there since the early stages of my football comprehension. He really is one of the all time great Steelers, and even my Dad who was around for all of the 70s, considers Ward to be a top 5 Steeler, and that’s with performance taken into consideration. I feel as if I’ve taken 86 for granted for the past two or three years, so I really hope he gets his chance to finish with the Black and Gold, and get another shot at a ring or two.
1. Troy-What he does on the football field cannot be duplicated. The ridiculous highlight reel he has put together for us over the years, along with his unbelievable class and humility is something fans and organizations in every sport dream about. Again, it’s hard to not take him for granted (although ’07, ’09, and the end of 2010 have helped us not to), but I know even if I live to be an old, towel-waving prune, I will probably never see a more gifted athlete and quality person than Troy Polamalu.
My apologies if this posts twice
