Even if Hines Ward Finishes His Career with Another Team, it Won't Tarnish His Legacy with the Steelers
What do Joe Montana, Joe Namath, O.J. Simpson and Jerry Rice all have in common? They were legendary football players who were almost synonymous with the teams they played with in the prime of their careers, yet, they all retired after playing their "golden" years with other teams.
There's been much talk and speculation in Steeler Nation about whether or not Hines Ward has played his last game with the Steelers, and whether he'll retire as a member of the Black and Gold or finish out his playing days with another team.
According to reports, the Steelers may part ways with Ward even though he's willing to do whatever he can to restructure his contract in-order to help the team fix their cap troubles.
If Hines Ward does have to leave, many fans (including me) would hate to see him play out the twilight of his career with another team.
In today's day and age of free agency and rampant player movement, it's always refreshing to see a legend play for the same team his entire career. It certainly makes for a great story, but at the end of the day, if Hines Ward still wants to play football, I hope he's not judged too harshly by the fans and media for it.
Ward is one of the very few people in the world who is lucky enough to get to do what he's been doing for the past 14 seasons--excel in a sport at its highest level.
Once any professional athlete decides to hang it up, that's pretty much it. If a lawyer decides he or she wants to give up practicing law, they know in the back of their mind they can go back to it any time they want.
It's different for an athlete. Hines will be 36 years old this season, and in our minds as football fans, he's an old geezer, but in terms of the real world, he's still in the prime of his life, and it's hard to walk away from something you've always loved at such a young age.
No matter what Ward does the rest of his life, he probably won't be able to replace the thrill and excitement that he gets from playing football in front of thousands of screaming fans. He won't find it dancing, he probably won't get that same rush acting, and I doubt even a career as a football analyst will be able to fill the void of competing on the football field.
This is where the fans have it over the players. Cheering for the Steelers will give me the same rush when I'm in my 50's and 60's that it gives me now, and that it gave me when I was a kid.
In the grand scheme of things, Ward only has a very small window to live out his dream, and if he feels he still wants to play, even for another team, I don't think it will harm his image in Pittsburgh after he finally does retire.
Does anyone even remember that Joe Montana played his final years with the Kansas City Chiefs? When I was a kid, I was amazed to find out that Joe Namath retired after playing a year or so with the Rams.
Did anyone even know that Jerry Rice played his last official game in 2004 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks? I sure didn't. In my mind, Rice will always be a 49er.
Closer to home, Steelers legends like Franco Harris and Rod Woodson finished their careers with other teams. Heck, Woodson played a significant amount of time after leaving the Steelers and even won a championship as a member of the Ravens. However, I think it's safe to say that when people think of Rod Woodson, they picture him making a huge play while wearing the black and gold.
Would it seem weird for me to see Ward's famous smile under a different colored helmet? No doubt, and heck, I might even catch some ribbing from fans of other teams for it, but I'm sure Hines Ward isn't concerned about my message board cred, he has to do what's best for him.
No matter where he finishes his career, Hines will always be a Steeler to me.

On a rational, mature scale...
…you are absolutely correct. However, for me, on a personal and admittedly selfish scale, I don’t want one iota of my memories of Hines Ward tainted with either the colors of another uniform, or with any sense that he “…isn’t what he used to be”.
I wish Hines all the best no matter what he does, but I hope he follows MJ Greene and John Stallworth, and goes out on top, as a Steeler, and only a Steeler.

Only the people in KC remember Joe being there. I hate seeing players leave teams where they were wildly
successful and go to the new team and have a mediocre ending to their career. I think Joe took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game, ( I could be wrong) but he is the only player that I know that was even marginally successful.

Kiwis are Welcome and Natural Steeler Fans !!! Just got done looking at All Blacks Tees and jerseys. The All Blacks Rugby team….like The Steelers of The Rugby World. Awesome !!!~
The Steelers tend to win when it matters more than the All Blacks
and certainly would do better than 8-7 against France!! ;)

I remember when Hines was drafted
He was being called he next Slash. I hope they can re-sign him so he can finish out his career as a Steeler like they did the Bus, part of me says it is the right thing to do, but I know it is a business.
Things can always be worse....
Maybe he'll go somewhere like Arizona
They have a ton of former Steelers.
I would not think any less of Hines if he moves on to a new team, especially if the Steelers choose to release him. Also, in some ways I’m kind of torn. I want him to stay a Steeler, but I also want him to get another 1000-1500 yards and 5-10 TDs before he retires. I just don’t see that happening with the Steelers at this point, given their young WRs.

It would be a shame to see Ward in another uniform or for us to play him not beind Steeler
I can relate it would be like seeing Ray Lewis or Ed Reed in another uniform. Hines has always been a worthy adversary. It will be a sad day football when he hangs it up all though as an opposing fan it will not be as sad for me. always sad see a true competitor who respects the game the way our respective teams play it leave.

Thanks Runew, classy, we appreciate it.
As much as I (irrationally) “hate” Ray Lewis, the simple fact is, this rivalry (as good and intense as any in any other sport) will not be the same without him or Ward on the field.
In the end, this is entertainment for all of us, and the more news of players leaving or guys being drafted to replace other players comes out, the more I want to rewind time to 2008, and have those guys frozen in their abilities, and watch them compete for another 20 years.

Montana and Rice
were among the few HOF players who found success with new teams, usually it’s not that way. Franco and Carl Eller were ineffective with Seattle, Johnny Unitas was awful with San Diego. In fact, Unitas saw his last action at Pittsburgh in 1973, and he was pulled for a young Dan Fouts.
I think Jerry Rice has the record for production for a 40 year old receiver, and he was good with Oakland. Joe Montana did not have nearly the offensive weapons he had in San Fran, but played well with Kansas City. We recall the ’93 playoff loss to the Chiefs, and in 1994, Montana beat the eventual World Champion Niners in the regular season, and upset the favored Oilers in the playoffs.
Here's to hoping
That he’ll be able to find a home in Todd Haley’s offense. Bruce tried to hard to spread the field, but Hines specializes in those underneath routes in the holes of zones.

Great Ones Who Finish Elsewhere...
Good article as always Tony. I think the question goes down to how the player finishes, when he finishes elsewhere.
Namath was terrible in that final year in LA. Ditto Unitas in his stint on the West Coast. Ditto Franco in Seattle.
Jerry Rice on the other hand, made it to another Super Bowl with the Raiders. Joe Montana played some great games in KC, including a great playoff comeback. Of course these guy will and should be remember as 49ers, but they still had something left.
As for Ward, I think he’s got something left and I would hate to see him wear another team’s colors. Arians was one of those who did not want him back, so perhaps that’s no longer an issue.
At anyrate, Bouchette is reporting that the NFL Network report was wrong, and that no decision has been made by the Steelers on Ward’s status.

That Chiefs Broncos game was awesome!
Two come from behind drives in the final 3-4 minutes by two masters of the two minute comeback. IIRC, they said that was the last stadium at that time that Montana had not won in as well.

I would love Hines to retire a Steeler
Considering how many players are broke within a few years of retiring, I can understand why he would want to sock away every penny he can. If his personal needs don’t mesh with the harsh reality of the Steelers salary cap situation and the personnel needs of the offence then I will be sorry to see him have to leave to finish elsewhere but I will understand and respect his decision.

What team is going to take a flyer on a 36 year old receiver who can't get open
because he ain’t getting any younger and has no burst anymore. What GM in his right mind is going to say, that’s who we need to target because he can block.
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer
"Clemson should've stopped turning the ball over" Dana Holgorsen when asked about running up the score in the Orange Bowl
What team? How about a team with 0 receivers on their team, such as Seattle or Cleveland. Or teams without really good receivers, like New England. San Francisco doesn’t have a solid number 3, and who’s catching passes in Washington these days?
I don’t know what the source of your anger is here, but there are plenty of teams in the NFL that don’t have a Brown/Wallace/Sanders type of receiving corps that could use a decent 3rd or 4th option.
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Problem is they would rather draft to fill that option
Those teams you listed are almost all rebuilding except for NE and SF, and rebuilding teams do not sign 36 year old wide receivers. As for NE and SF, its not like Tom Brady needs another receiver when he has his awesome two tight ends and Welker, and SF is a running team and they got by pretty well without a real standout, which Ward would not be.
I hate saying it, but he doesnt offer that much anymore.

Well…when it comes to Cleveland, I would never put anything past them. I sincerely hope they don’t put their grubby paws on RGIII. And it’s not because I believe he would be a thorn in our side for years in the right situation, It’s because they will probably flush his career straight down the toilet like they have so many other promising players in the last 20 years.
But while I agree he may not offer that much anymore, I’m only thinking about how horrible some NFL teams are at the WR position, and the fact that there may be a team or two that would sign just based off name recognition (like Seattle signing Jerry Rice).
Can you really say that Ward would be the worst FA WR signing in the last five years?
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Of course not, but its just a league now where receivers are dime a dozen and pick up the game so much quicker than they used to. So why sign a guy for 1 year when you could draft a younger, quicker, more lethal one and keep him around for a few years.
Ward isnt a guy who is going to get a promising team into Superbowl conversation. Jerry Rice is the exclusion, but guys like Derrick Mason, Randy Moss and Terrell Owens didnt last off of name recognition.

First, I find it extremely strange that I just happen to check this site exactly seven minutes after you make your comment this often. I have been working on a project for a class I started taking in January pretty much all night, but after awhile, I need to do something else…both times…there you are…
Second, that is true, they didn’t last. But this isn’t about whether he’s going to last or not, it’s about whether there will be one team out of 31 teams not named the Steelers that may want to kick the tires a bit. And I believe there will be. Even if it’s a dumb move, there are more than a few teams out there with dumb FO’s, and more than a few that want to draw any type of attention they can on to their team.
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
True, the poll on ESPN was “Would you want Hines Ward on your team” and it was pretty much 50/50 yes or no. So there are a lot of fans out there who like and respect the guy, but I also remember a similar poll about T.O and the poll result was 60/40 in favor of Yes, however no team ever called him

that is true as well. However, T.O had a lot more baggage than Hines…right?
T.O’s reputation preceded him. And it wasn’t even fair, because he had changed from the time he signed with Buffalo.
Public opinion held him back more than his ability. Ward doesn’t have that public perception. (other than the morons that call him dirty)
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
True
That was only 5 minutes that time.
And I think the perception of T.O had changed his last couple years, he behaved in Buffalo and Cincinnati, but the teams chose to move on with younger players, in fact both teams pretty much rebuilt. Buffalo had Stevie Johnson and Cincy completely overhauled their offense.
I’ll be surprised if he goes anywhere but here, which I hope is still the case

Thanks for noticing hahaha
But yeah, I see all points, I just still think there will be at least 1 team to sign him if we don’t. But ultimately, I hope he signs with us. Even more than that, I hope he makes a big impact next year on the way to number 7
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Gotta (half way) agree with you on this one Frank
If this was last year, I would have said definitely take T.O.. With one year off and “no football”. I wonder if T.O. still has that competitive desire. Would love to see him and Hines with us and making clutch catches and helping to school the “younguns”. Also I am wondering if he could be patient, not being the “the man”. I am also hoping that Peyton Manning does not get tempted by the money that the money that the Redskins might offer him. Being with the Redskins would be a losing and "painful endeavor for him. Being here with us – 6000 for passing yards, a Super Bowl victory, hmmmmm!!!! (just joking). I also agree that if RG III went to Cleveland, he would be an NFL bust. I just don’t think that the chemistry would be right. Would like to see him go to Miami. I just hope that our “numbers cruncher” can get us some cap space.
I don't think the younguns need any more help. They're all ready to fly on their own.
I think they proved that much last season.

You know,
Where does the likes of Aaron Smith and how the FO has dealt with him fall in this whole argument about keeping Hines or releasing him. Aaron, as much of a fan a I am of him, has been useless for the better part of 3 of 4 seasons and yet, the FO keeps him on, and from what I understand, it’s because he WAS such a contributor for years and the FO loves him. If that is a factor, Hines should play until HE decides to retire. This is an aspect of the argument that I have yet to see or understand.
Hines is a better STEELER veteran than Cotchery. Cotchery is great and all, but Hines was being pushed out by Arians and Ben. His production fell because of opportunity rather than his ability. Getting rid of Hines would be a crime, especially if he plays for another team.
Honestly, I think the best thing that could have happened with Hines is the demise of Arians. If Haley decides to keep Hines around, we may see the second coming of WARD!!!
Second coming? Hardly.
I doubt at 36 Ward is going to see a career resurgence. I prefer him over Cotchery, though. He got lost in the shuffle because Ben and Arians grew addicted to the deep ball. This is something that was never part of Ward’s game. I still like the guy in the red zone at any age. My hope is he would give us a real deep discount, and be some proven depth at a small cap hit.
Emmitt Smith in AZ was fail as well
by Nate36bus on Feb 12, 2012 6:02 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Not a complete fail.
He did run for 937 yds and 9 TD in 2004 (played in 15 games) as a 35 yr old in his final season. That was with Josh McCown at QB, which meant 7-8 in the box and little to no fear of the Cardinal passing game.
Come to think of it, that’s actually kind of impressive. 2003 with AZ? Not so much.
by HandsofSweed on Feb 12, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions
Ward is worth more than the veteran minimum
and I’m sure one of the television networks will be more than happy to pay the man.
I hope we keep him but......
I think he should be kept if he will play for the vet minimum or slightly more and he is my reasons why.
1. The veteran leadership is a given and what Ward can bring in that capacity. I say that but he has to turn into a bigger cheer leader than he was last year but if Bettis could do it for his last 2 years so can Hines.
2. We need the depth. Especially if Cotchery does not resign with Pittsburgh. Then Ward enters camp as your #4 receiver.
3. With the release of Battle it opens up a potential roster spot. We typically keep 5-6 receivers and the 6th is for a special teams player typically. Thus we can keep 6 if we get a rookie of vet minimum guy that can also cover kicks.
4. And this is my biggest reason.
I would love to see Hines come across the middle one more time and deliver the block of his career to Ray Lewis.
I don't like the idea of lewis knocking Ward out with a real cheap shot as his last play against those purple bums.
Especially since it wasn’t even called. How demoralizing. How disgusting. How appropriate in this day and age.
