BTSC Draft Forum: Evaluating Georgia OG Cordy Glenn

After discussing Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill as a possible target by another team (trading into the Steelers spot at 24th overall), the BTSC Draft Forum is now moving onto players the Steelers may draft themselves.

First up is Cordy Glenn, the mammoth G/T prospect out of Georgia.

Star-divide

The 6-foot-5, 346-pound Glenn fits the Steelers' desire to bring in offensive linemen who can play more than one position. His height and length make some see him more as a tackle, while his bulk and explosiveness seem to fit the profile of a guard.

For better or worse, the Forum's impression of him is mixed.

I just don't think he is a 1st rounder at the moment. I've only seen one game of him at G and he looked kind of awkward moving around in that role. He was shaky in pass protection and he couldn't stay on his man when he was run-blocking. I actually think he may make a better RT than G, being that he looks a lot better run-blocking when playing OT. Maybe after the combine I will think he is a 1st rounder, but he is a high 2nd to me now. Would rather have a pure G like Kevin Zeitler in the 2nd.

- Parris Brantley (a.k.a. StoneColdSteel)

It's worth mentioning that Glenn started 50 games along the offensive line at Georgia, tied for the most in school history with Clint Boling (4th round pick by Cincinnati in 2010). Of those 50 starts - 28 came at left guard, 18 at left tackle and four at right guard. Some feel he's best suited to the the interior of the offensive line.

Cordy Glenn to me is going to be an NFL guard. His absolute ceiling would be RT, but he'd need a lot of work on his mechanics. I think he lacks the natural elite athleticism to be a LT. He has the strength to keep rushers out of the pocket face to face, but he can struggle when blocking in space. He does great work with his hands, but lacks quick footwork in pass protection. In run blocking, Glenn has great lower body work that allows him to get a great push. If you compare him to Decastro he is probably a bit stronger, but DeCastro's technique and mechanics are far superior. Anyway, I think he would automatically be the best guard on the Steelers and with coaching could be one of the better OGs in the league. Definitely worth the pick at 24.

- John Stephens

Others feel he is more of a tackle prospect.

I know everyone is projecting Glenn at Guard, but I can see him playing OT in the NFL. Glenn played LT this past season at Georgia, and played well enough to be selected All SEC first team, making him one of the top offensive lineman, in the best conference in college football. Glenn moves better than Marcus Gilbert, has longer arms, and is a couple of pounds heavier than Gilbert was when he entered the draft. I watched Glenn play against LSU this past season, and he had no problem holding off the pass rush, against the best defense in college football.

Glenn has great feet, is able to stay low in his stance, and has good balance when engaging defenders. The same skill set he was able to display playing at LT, would also apply to LG. Add to that, that Glenn was able to play at a high level, against some of the best defenses college football has to offer, and I don't see how a team can go wrong drafting him in the first round.

- Greig Clawson

It's hard to see a player as big and versatile as Glenn falling out of the first round, and it seems likely he'll land somewhere in the 20s if he tests well at the 2012 NFL Combine (Feb. 22-28).

His footwork will likely keep him away from the highly-coveted left tackle position, but that isn't to suggest he could not play there. Branden Albert had really only played guard at the University of Virginia, since left tackle was locked down during his collegiate career by D'Brickashaw Ferguson (4th pick overall in 2006) and Eugene Monroe (8th overall in 2009). Albert was very highly rated at guard, but wanted to prove his position flexibility and ended up being selected 15th overall by Kansas City in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has since played every snap of his professional career at left tackle.

Glenn's versatility is key. If he could not only develop into a starting guard but also a quality back-up tackle, the Steelers would have more flexibility should heavy casualties again ravage the offensive line.

Glenn feels like a reach at 24...

especially with such a deep draft at OG. The Steelers like to draft “no holes” guys in Round 1. I’d love to see the Steelers trade down so that they have 3 picks in the first two rounds and come away with prospects at NT, OG and ILB. Poe or Ta-amu at NT, maybe Zeitler at OG, and no worse than Cole at ILB.

It would also help with cap issues this year and in the the next few years without having to give out first round cash.

Your 3 2nd round picks would be freakin NICE.

Love them all and think they all fit the mold as tough, smart minded football players.

Stay thirsty my friends.

He could be the one

But with the depth in the OG class in this draft the steelers may wait till the 2nd round to take an OG.
Like we all know it may come down to what other players are available when they are on the clock. And If they can move up to 19 or 20 to get a number 1 player like Kuechly , double D or a surprise pick anything is possible?

It all depends on where he is on the Steelers board.

We can logical assume that guys like Ingram, Konz, Adams, Jeffery are ahead of him. Maybe Poe. Personally I think he is a guard with limited ability to play tackle.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Feb 18, 2012 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Why/how can we assume that?

I don’t think every one of the guys you mentioned is, without question, higher on their board. I’d agree with Ingram (although he would be an OLB in our defense), but I wouldn’t put Konz, Adams or Jeffery absolutely without question ahead of Glenn.

by Neal Coolong on Feb 18, 2012 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure about Ingram

While he is a very good player, I would like to see him move around at the combine so I can get a feel for how good he is in space. OLBs in our system have to be able to drop back in coverage and Ingram is a pretty heavy guy, like Woodley.

I would rather have a lighter OLB on the other side of Woodley, someone who is better in space and quicker at turning the corner. That should be our best pass rusher.

Trust me, Ingram is very athletic for being over 275lb. He’s almost like a Woodley clone, which is very exciting. Just imagine two Woodleys on the same defense… But yeah, like I said, his athleticism is why people love Ingram so much.

Does that mean

that Woodley would have to teach Ingram how to super kick?

by Greig Clawson on Feb 18, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

We dont need two Woodleys

We need a lighter version of him on the left side that’s better in coverage. He and Ingram are about the same.

The days of having huge LBs are over. We need lighter guys who are good space and quick around the corner.

Draft insider / Ingram

Draft insider has reported that Ingram may run under a 4.7 40.
Ingram was rumered to run in the high 4,4s when he first entered college and before he gained 30 lbs to play DE

by steeler junky on Feb 18, 2012 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

I seriously doubt that

I dont doubt he was faster, but that report basically says that at one point he was almost as fast as Manny Sanders or Antonio. And I dont believe that at all.

Besides, I dont care about his straight line speed; I care about how quickly he can change direction from hash to hash.

quite right

I agree with you on that,
But the report will make checking his numbers after the combine a little more interesting.

Good point

It will be interesting to see what weight Ingram plays at, if he is drafted by a 3-4 team. From what I’ve seen out of him, he does have good straight line speed, and good agility. If gets his weight down into the 260-265 range, it will only improve those aspects of his game.

by Greig Clawson on Feb 19, 2012 3:57 AM EST up reply actions

Ingram is very good in space

He was recruited by SC to play OLB, and played the position during his rookie season. He continued to get bigger through out his college career. That, and injuries on the D-line, is why he eventually moved to DE.

USC played in a base 43, but they also played some 34. When the went to the 34, Ingram would often line up and ROLB, and did a good job rushing the passer, and playing in coverage. I have heard a number of people compare Ingram to LaMarr Woodley. As someone who has watched almost every USC game over the past two years, I tend to agree.

by Greig Clawson on Feb 18, 2012 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

I already know all that stuff

But we dont need another huge LB like Ingram or Upshaw. If both were a little smaller then I would be all for it, but the days of huge LBs are over.

Woodley has improved in coverage, but he still isn’t better than Harrison. We need the guy opposite of LaMarr to be a little lighter on his feet

Neither are most 3-4 OLBs.

I think that means we should pick someone smaller who is better in coverage

Or either continue with the development of Worilds and Carter.

Just because Ingram is large doesn’t mean he isn’t good in coverage. I’d put his coverage ability above almost any other DE/OLB in this class, including a lot of those smaller OLBs you think we should be targeting. He also has very quick feet and has nice closing speed, in case that helps change your mind.

Glenn is a tall guy

Which is why I think his future is a RT, not G. He struggled at times at LT against good rushers, but he probably played that position out of necessity. Dont think he is as good with his hands playing inside.

I think Glenn is going to be drafted as a RT

He is a waist bender and tall. That combination doesn’t suit interior linemen. He was destroyed by Ta’amu at the Senior Bowl. He doesn’t get off the snap fast enough and plays to high which negates his tremendous stature. He gets lazy with his feet and hand placement as well. When focused he has the feet to be an NFL RT and in a poor tackle draft I think a team will draft him as one.

Huge fan of the Steelers. (that includes "Steelers West")

Poe

I want Poe and we can draft Olinemen afterwards the dude is 6"5" tall. He’s our Haloti Ngata for the next 8 years. He would require double teams on all downs and free up Woodley and Harrison. Tremendous pressure up the middle in the faces of top QB’s all day/night long.

by 72Steeler on Feb 18, 2012 6:33 PM EST reply actions

Me too

I would love to have a Ngata clone on our side. I think it would improve the defense instantly. Then we would have Mclendon as a quality backup/rotation guy. We would still need another d-lineman for depth, but I would be loving some Poe.

I seriously doubt Poe is going to be anywhere near as good as Ngata. That’s not necessarily a knock on Poe, just a testament to how amazing Ngata is.

If poe was as good as ngata

its a no brainer to take him in the 1st. Times like this we need time travel.

I love the Steelers.

He's a long legged kid

Not sure of that best suits our pulling guard run game.. Im sure he’s a beast on run plays to his side… If im not mistaken, he’s also had some weight issues during his college days… hate to have that given the Starks-Essex problems we started the year with…

Drafting Glenn

If we draft Glenn, does that mean we slide Colon inside to RG? He will be on the roster and if he is physically ok (recovered from his arm injury), he will be the starting RT at the opening of camp with Gilbert on the left side.
