Steelers results for the MtD Live Draft

Hey guys. We just completed our first Mocking the Draft Live Draft and here is who myself and steel.curtain.number2 landed.

Trade: Round Pick 24 to the Panthers for #40, 82, 105 and 136

Round 2 Pick 40: Ronnell Lewis, LB, Oklahoma

Other Options: Alameda Ta'amu, Kevin Zeitler

Round 2 Pick 56: Brandon Washington, OG/OT, Miami

Other Options: Bobby Massie

Round 3 Pick 88: Nate Potter, OT, Boise State

Other Options: None. He was so easily the BPA and filled a big need

Round 4 Pick 101: Juron Criner, WR, Arizona

I traded Pick 105 and our 7th round pick to move up and nab the early 2nd round prospect.

Round 4 Pick 120: Billy Winn, DE, Boise State

Easily the BPA and fills a need as our 4th DE. He is a 3rd round prospect and was too good to pass up here.

Round 5 Pick 136: Brandon Taylor, S, LSU

Again, the BPA and fills a need as a backup safety (future starter), a special teams player, and possibly a nickel corner as well.

Round 6 Pick 165: Chris Marve, ILB, Vanderbilt

I was going to take Marve at Round 5 Pick 152 but worked out a deal with the Browns to get our 7th round pick back.

Round 6 Pick 184: Delvin Johnson, NT, Marshall

I wanted Hebron Fangupo but he went right before I was going to pick. However, Marshall is a good prospect who might be able to become a starter down the road.

Round 7 Pick 216: Tauren Poole, RB, Tennessee

Poole was the BPA and is actually a very good prospect. He had a tough year because of how bad Tennessee was and he could become a good RBBC.

Star-divide

Ultimately I am extremely happy with this draft as we filled some needs early, got some major steals in Winn and Criner, and got a couple guys to fill needs again in the later rounds. Here are the reasons I picked to LB's.

1. Lewis is a versatile guy and is not strictly an ILB. He can be a pass rusher at OLB, he can play some safety, and he can play ILB.

2. Marve is more of the thumper we need while Lewis as an athlete. Marve is basically James Farrior in his size and speed (not his current speed, his old speed).

3. Marve was the BPA

What do yall think of this draft?

I think there was pick that changed hands between the Steelers and Browns a bunch as well

Yea. Pick 100 was exchanged 4 times and yes I traded my 7th round pick to the Browns only to get it back later in the draft.

MCM is killing me over the Titans draft based on the fact that I didn't take Mark Barron and took Zach Brown instead

Nice job

But no kicker?! ;)

Overall, looks good. From much of what I’ve read on here lately, I would have expected one more interior OL, though.

Did you consider making the person that picked before you disappear? Just how dedicated to this team are you? Judging by you just accepting the fact that the guy took your kicker without doing something about it says “not very”.

Kickers

I would not waste a draft pick for a kicker. Simply keep Shaun Suisham or sign an UFA.

by GeorgeQUAD on Feb 19, 2012 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Dude..how the hell is a kicker a waste? Do you not realize how many problems our kicker caused this year? Not only did he suck at making them, he also put is in bad positions by our coaches not being able to trust him outside of 35 yards. What UFA’s are available? Did you consider who’s available? I’ll tell you this much, probably not anyone good.
Keeping Suisham is without a doubt the dumbest move the team could make. How many kickers do you know that survive a 74% season? The answer is the same as “how many dumb teams would keep a 74% kicker”

There was never any good value at NT and I was not going to reach for one when players like

Nate Potter, Juron Criner, Billy Winn, and Brandon Taylor were available. I got those guys all at least 1 round, if not two rounds later (Taylor), or even possibly 3 rounds later then they will get picked (Criner). Or I could have reached for Hebron Fangupo in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th round.

if you need something, sometimes you have to reach

I’d get a NT in the 4th at the very latest before picking a WR, S, DE guys who are all going to be backups next year more than likely.

IF you don’t plug in some talent at NT, I see that following the way the FO has treated the OG position. The Darnell Stapleton effect….

Criner was a STEAL in the 4th. Nice work on that one.

Must have been a tough decision to get with the LB instead of the NT with the 1st pick. I take it Zeitler was gone by 56?

Why does everyone think Ronnell Lewis could transition to ILB?

He mainly played olb and de in college and after reading about him from various scouting sites makes it sound his best postion in the 3-4 would be olb

This is good, but you way undervalued the first trade

Last year, the Browns traded the 26th pick and a third rounder (#70) to the Chiefs to move up 5 spots. Yet, somehow you value a 16 pick drop as worth 118 points below what our pick is worth. The 24th pick is worth 740 points, you got a return of 622. This also discounts that teams moving into the first round always overpay. Unless you got us a first rounder next year to go along with one fourth, this trade is not even close to even.

Not trying to be picky, but I would be very upset if Colbert made this trade.

no problem

the craziest trade was for #7 overall, the Bengals essentially gave up their whole draft to the Jags to pick David DeCastro

I went BPA instead of reaching for a NT that was not as good

Potter, Criner, Winn, and Taylor were too good to pass up where I was picking. Those are four starting caliber players right there taken im the third through fifth rounds.

Players

You may have picked more real football players than any other mock. These guys are genuine – especially Lewis, Potter, Criner, Winn & Poole. Washington has to be a beast for this to work. Who is Delvin Johnson? Can’t find him anywhere??

by Bonek on Feb 19, 2012 10:49 AM EST reply actions

He already said why he didn’t pick an NT. And he’s right in not doing so. Our team wouldn’t just grab an NT for the sake of grabbing an NT, like many on here are expecting/want.

by FrankWyt on Feb 19, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Hey, we're doing a mock post-draft commentary as well

I think they did an outstanding job, and picked several BPAs with starting potential, and I buy the explanation that they would have otherwise reached for a NT.

Still, we would point out the obvious, and hope that FA or a trade would then bring us Snack’s replacement, which we need now. Otherwise, one of the three pillars of the modern Lebeau defense would be sorely lacking, thereby affecting the other two (OLBs and S), which, as I’ve argued here before, acts as a multiplying effect on our defense.

Of course, but I’m not going to put the whole draft down just because he didn’t grab a certain player/position I felt he should have.
For all we know, the FO might not even be thinking NT, they could feel like they are good to go. I think these guys did a great job too.

Nice work Seton

Lot of stuff to keep up with, especially all the trades. Solid draft, not crazy about Lewis. Would you have taken Poe(STL #39) if he was there at 40. When the post combine Mock the Draft happens would be nice to have a War Room going on at BTSC. Once again nice work and good luck with the girlfriend. Props to Noles as well.

Would you have picked differently in the rest of the draft if you got Poe(obviously Delvin Johnson in the 6th) but anyone else?

I thought the Bengals trading so much to move that high for DeCastro was not such a good move, and Cordy Glenn was taken too high IMO.

What I would have done in this situation....

Gotten Ronnell Lewis but draft Silatolu in the second. Washingtons feet are too slow for me to get him in the second and he won’t be at the combine so it looks like he has solidified himself as a third round pick. Silatolu has better physical potential just hasn’t played against better competition. At #88 I’d have grabbed Crick value is too high at there though Potter is high value just not the type of player the Steelers draft.

Like the Criner pick however would have grabbed Trumaine Johnson at that pick at this point in the 6’2 204lbs CB out of Montana would be a steal he is considered a second round and in this mock he didn’t even get drafted. He had some character concerns but he is going to get drafted.

question about Wallace

when is the deadline for teams to take away Wallace from us? If I understand correctly, if they sign Wallace we get their 1st round pick. Well, I can take it as long as we get their 1st rounder this year.

But is it possible for teams to sign Wallace after the draft and we get their 1st rounder next year?

That will be very bad situation.

Personally, I would hope Ozzie doesn’t make a move like this for a few reasons.

1. Big contract, big cap hit, and give up a 1st round pick.
2. More pressing needs
3. Just wouldn’t feel right.

First round receiver

I don’t know if you could guarantee that you could draft a player at your spot in the draft who would be as good as Wallace. I think to some teams, if they were drafting where Baltimore is drafting, would be well advised to sign him. I don’t know if he is as good a fit for the Ravens as he would be for other teams but taking him would definitely hurt the Steelers so it might be a decent strategic move for the Ravens. He would improve your WR corps and it would put a big dent in the Steelers core.

I don’t know if you could guarantee that you could draft a player at your spot in the draft who would be as good as Wallace.

Which is why the Ravens might make a move like that. WR is one of the top 3 position we would like to upgrade this year, and no WR at the 29th pick is going to be half as good as Wallace is.

But still, Ozzie doesn’t like to part ways with those 1st round picks, and given our draft history at the bottom of the first round, a future star will fall in our laps most likely.

I doubt you sign him

It’s why you drafted Torrey Smith. It doesn’t make sense to draft him and then turn around a sign Wallace. Especially with that O-line Flacco wouldn’t have time to throw those PIs to both of them.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

Pretty good job over all.
Just not sure about the Potter Pick. Potter; I think will have to impress throuh out the combine, to see him worth more than a 4th round pick.
